I am explaining what I understand to be Drew's argument which is that there is no argument and no discussion and he's not asking for people's opinion on how best to appease everyone. It's a take it or leave it situation...he's not going to show up at your house and steal your personal art if you choose not to submit.

Ok. I'm Glad.

Here's some of my slogans:
"Top rated photography on demand. Dpprints.com"
more to come...

I think that when the admins select any of the artwork for use, they ought to be able to work with the artist in fine tuning it for their liking. I don't think it mentioned that in the announcement, but this is a standard cllient-artist relationship. After spending literally 14 hours working on these things, I look forward to everyone else's artwork--I'm sure the labor has probably been the same!

I mention the money because that's what's at the backbone of the issue here. You're trying to sell more prints and wouldn't mind having more memberships. $$$ I don't doubt that you guys haven't make 10,000 dollars this year. And frankly, that's none of my business. But, this is a tool designed to sell prints. Thus an advertisment.

Somehow I don't think Drew and Langdon make too much money off of DPC... 6934 users... probably only slightly over 150 members... but DPC HAS to be on a dedicated server, and it sucks a LOT of bandwidth and that's NOT cheap. I assumed that membership was created for the purpose of keeping DPC alive, and possibly compensating Drew and Langdon for their MANY hours of work that's gone into DPC. If DPC continued to grow to the point it is at now, and Drew and Langdon didn't have any incoming money they would probably be going in debt now in order to pay the bandwidth bill alone, or they'd have been forced to take DPC down. Hosting pictures like DPC does isn't cheap!

PLUS any advertising DPC does benefits the users of DPC who sell their work here. They're helping the users by doing this as much, if not more, than they're helping themselves.

I've always looked at DPC as a community of people online who have a like interest and a medium for sharing in that interest. I got that feeling the first day I stumbled across DPC, and I'm glad to say I'm a part (thought not too active lately) of this community.

I signed up for a membership feeling that I was helping keep DPC Alive, and ya Drew and Langdon will probably make some money from DPC, but they deserve it majorly. This site is amazing. The technical programming on this site must have taken many sleepless nights to code. They've created the best community based digital photography site I've found so far.

I don't mean to rant and rave, but I think Drew and Langdon aren't getting enough credit here, and are taking a lot of flak from people. I won't be submitting to the sticker challenge, as I haven't even had the time to take normal challenge pictures lately. But I would do so and be proud to have my work used on this site, and be able to say that I contributed to the community of DPC.

I think a lot of people take DPC for granted, and don't realize the effort that has gone into making a wonderful medium for digital photography sharing, printing, contests, and a great community for everyone to participate in online.

Drew and Langdon don't deserve the flak they're getting from this.

Dude, they are wonderful programmers and have created a huge site with fantasic options. I'm not demonizing them, and i don't want to be demonized either. I'm simply saying that i don't agree with the method used to create advertisements, think they should throw the winners a little somthing, mabye a free print of somthing for helping out the site. That would be fair to everyone. As a person who put himself through college by making advertisements for major companies you have to protect your talents at some point. I not saying never help anyone that's just rude.

In that case I say everybody who has written a tutorial, made a good suggestion for the site, found and reported a bug, posted a helpful answer to the forums, or had their work displayed on the front page for a week should receive a free print or something too. Let's see how fast we can wipe this site off the net.

I suggest you search Google for 'Open Source'. 99.9% of the projects that are returned will never have received a penny/cent/whatever for all their hard work, yet tens, even hundreds of developers in some cases give their time and hard work for no return other than being able to say 'I did that'.
Many of these projects have also run 'Design a Logo' contests with a top prize of ... being able to say 'I did that'.

Money isn't the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. I don't know what the answer is but I'm certain that helping people out, just because you can, is part of that answer.

Once again, if you don't agree, don't submit. Let the rest of us get on with enjoying ourselves.

Good god, you guys like to take a simple point and run.

IT's almost as though some of you are calling me a "commie" because i think we should share. WTF?

The answer is 42 according to a computer called Deep Thought, but I'm not going to believe that until someone reassures me that it wasn't running on Windows ; )

Geo - you brought the payment thing back up again not me, and as for your quote I refer you back to the 'money isn't the answer' part of my post.
I'm not trying to call you anything, just pointing out that what is happening with these challenges has happened many, many times before, in many different forms.

*sigh*

Perhaps, no one can listen to a person's opinion without attacking that person's idea or that person him/herself. Let's not forget i was trying to clafiy a feeling shared among many members.

Bod- respected 602z photographer and fellow DPC member. Will you let me have my opinion? I agree with your "Be excellent to each other" quote. In fact, i beleive that this is the only way to be. I also beleive in baing fair to one another and yourself. I haven't attacked Drew or anyone else, i simply disagree because of my experiences and my business since. I've SEEN many many people get taken advantace of under innocent intentions.

That's all.

If i were to like cherry pie, would you all rant and rave about how bad it is, or would you say..."oh, ok. That's cool. I don't like it."

Yes, i am aware that no one has to submit.

Funny, I love how when someone voices their opinion, it's their "right" and opinion. But the moment someone speaks up against their opinion it becomes an attack.

I think it's one thing if a multi-million dollar company comes to you and says, "Well we need you to come up with new campaign ads for this latest whatever we're doing. Oh and by the way, this would be more of a favor to me seeing how such good friends we are, thanks."

It's another when a small business/group that's probably putting more time into something than what they're getting back says, "Hey we have an open challenge to anyone that wants to design a sticker for us. There is no obligation to anyone to enter this challenge. You will be given credit for this design and can use it in a portfolio or resume. Have fun!"

Hmm, maybe my logic is completely skewed, because to me this seems like two totally different situations. You said it yourself:
"I not saying never help anyone that's just rude."
So what you're really saying then is Drew is making lots of money off this site and is just trying to take advantage of anyone that can come up with a design? Ok Drew, show us the money, the jig is up, we know you're stacked :p

I might have registered just recently but have been reading the forums and whatnot for a while now. If one cannot handle having their opinions disagreed with. Maybe one shouldn't voice their opinions if they feel any disagreement is an attack on them. Just a thought.

I would sure like this challenge to last 2 weeks. I just got back from vacation. I feel like I have been gone for a month and it has only been five days.

Any how I might give it a try, but if not I think it is a good idea. Can't wait to see the results!

I also maintain full rights to wear the sticker on my forhead for the remainder of my days. I expect a $7 royalty for each sticker sold and my profits are to be direct deposited to my account on every third day, except when the third day falls on a Sunday, in which case, it must be deposited by Monday morning at 10am. This is only reasonable. Thanks.

Btw, I'm going out partying this weekend, so can the deadline be changed to Tuesday at 11:15 am? I should at my desk then.

If you ask me, the Admins could easily have come up with their own sticker idea, they only did this to let those who wanted to, get involved, and say (as previously posted) "I DID THAT!!" It is called active participation. It is sometimes used to make/help people be more involved and have a sense of belonging.

Put a photo credit on your entry...

For a similar "challenge" with even less reward, check out Jones Soda -- some 120,000 entries in their gallery of potential labels...

Even less reward is right -- they STILL haven't sent me the comp labels they're supposed to send when one of your images is picked to be on a label -- nor did they ever respond to my e-mail on the subject...

Hmmmm, technically, they're in breach of contract -- yeah, and what, I'm going to sue them for a handful of labels???
