it's not the size of the camera, it's how you use it.

Just like to throw out an idea for the DPCPrint challenge.
This may or may not give you a better idea to submit for this challenge.
I will probably not do my idea any justice..
Here it is.

Taking a picture of an individual looking at his print (you can use your photo printer for this copy if you want) and compairing it to the actual image (scene).

This is just an idea.
Everyone good luck.

I just now saw this thread and i think the people who are voicing concern arn't picking apart the rules, they seem to reconize that website is a commerical business, and just as many of us wouldn't do a free layout for Coke or Sprint, they happen to feel this way about this website. After all you will me making money off the work of the artists.

That's how i understand the situation.

I do think making advertisments (for this site) 2 challenges a bit tacky though. IMHO.

Don't get me wrong, I do very much enjoy the site and wish it well.

Man, I really think there's a few people here that need to find a nice big field to take their soapbox with them.

Am I the only one that reads posts? Correct me if I'm wrong but I could've sworn Drew said these stickers will not be sold, they will be given away. NOT being the key word here.

I might be going out on a limb here by saying I don't think you'll be getting a letter from a DPC lawyer stating that you're breaking the law by having your sticker submission in your portfolio/resume.

Not making any money off the stickers you designed? So what. The majority here do not make money off their weekly submissions, so why even bother shooting and submitting every week?

As far as being tacky, I can't recall how many companies do things like this. "Design our logo", "Create our slogan", etc, etc.

The funny part about all of this is I didn't remember seeing it posted anywhere on the site that this challenge was manditory. You don't agree with the challenge or the rules stated for it? Move along and don't enter. Every challenge isn't going to be for everyone.

I really dont think that this is really a big issue. It certainly does not warrant such rudeness on your part. Personally I dont care about being rewarded if they choose my sticker design, but I was concerned about the copyrights. I was a bit confused as to how that would work. No need for such drama. I think the main difference between the sticker challenges and the regular challenges is the fact that these will be printed off.

I think all some people wanted was clarification, and they got it.
Thanks guys

Ykes, I'm not trying to start a fire storm, i was trying to explain what i beleive to be one the underrepresented side of the issue. I beleive that in any issue, the individual should try to step back and understand where the other side is coming from. I was not being rude, i wrote one sentence stating how i felt about the challenge.

And for the record, i do find it tacky when larger companies have "design our logo" contests and no reward for the design other than having somthing for your resume. However with many companies, their's some reward, like a year's supply of the product, or $10,000 or a vacation trip etc...

Sold or not, these would be promotional tools---> Designed to turn a profit. Much like any advertisement.

I work professionally in the advertising industry as an actor/model/videographer and if you allow people to take advantage of you/your work, they will. (Drew, i'm not saying this to you, i'm referring more to corporate types on a bigger scale) If you don't look out for yourself, no one will.

Speaking of perspective, this is a brilliant idea on the part of the site admins. To create the diverse and creative ideas that will be submitted would take a serious investment or time and money, so why not make it a challenge and have the users create the images for free. That's just smart corporate thinking. If i were in Drew's shoes, i'd probally do the same thing. But you know, i'd probally give out a couple of prints for the top 3 or 4. Just to squash out nay sayers.

It is easy to just say someone is stupid/rude and dismiss them, it's a lot more work to understand and respect their point of view. I was mearly casting my vote on the matter, for what it's worth.

adam

JOKE: I think we should have "a buy me a car" challenge. All of you get a car and I'll select the winner. The person who designed it will get the love and respect of their peers.

Your statement closest to a correct assumption is slightly off. Of course the stickers are meant as a promotional tool, but the part you missed is that what we're trying to promote is a website where the members of DPChallenge are trying to sell their prints. We brainstorm about this constantly, and this is just another one of our ideas. There are people who love this site and the effort we put into it, and we thought it would be a fun idea -- aside from a few skeptics, I think we assumed right about the enthusiasm of the site's users. If you want a $10,000 prize, you should probably start with a company that's made $10,000. It's been said several times in this thread, but I'll say it again -- if you don't like the challenge, don't participate! How much easier could it be? Is it really necessary to drag everyone else into your skeptical views? I hope this will be my last comment on the issue...

Drew, Like i was saying before, i'm mearly stating what is felt by serveral people who have posted in this thread. I'm not trying to convince anybody. I have yet to see anyone that's ever changed their mind at the hand of some website forum.

Drew, you know i was saying that 10,000 dollar prize as an example of other company's contests. I had no idea, you'd take that literally.

Here's my point:
This website is a business, a business that grosses at least $3000/year (at least 150 members@20/year=$3000) + prints + any advertisements on the nonmember section of the site. I mention the money because that's what's at the backbone of the issue here. You're trying to sell more prints and wouldn't mind having more memberships. $$$ I don't doubt that you guys haven't make 10,000 dollars this year. And frankly, that's none of my business. But, this is a tool designed to sell prints. Thus an advertisment.

I am one of those people who very much enjoys this site and wish it well, I enjoy it so much that i put an investment into the site(somthing i never do). This is a great business model, and if i could i'd invest directly in it.

It seems that there is an "us vs them" mentality brewing and that's too bad because nothing positive will come from that. I do have to say that i don't appreciate being treated by the admins as some "skeptic" trying to convince everyone else. That's nieve and offensive.

For the 3rd time, I'm explaing what i understand to be the underrepresented protion of the arguement.

Better yet, let me say this:
I'd bet that 90 percent of the folks on this site would be all for designing promotion tools for the site, they just don't want to be taken advantage of.

I am explaining what I understand to be Drew's argument which is that there is no argument and no discussion and he's not asking for people's opinion on how best to appease everyone. It's a take it or leave it situation...he's not going to show up at your house and steal your personal art if you choose not to submit.
