Announcing the DPChallenge.com and DPCPrints.com Sticker Design Challenges!

Your challenge is to create a 3x5 inch sticker for DPChallenge.com and/or DPCPrints.com. Obviously, designs for each need to be submitted to the correct challenge. Here are the requirements for your submission:

1. Your must design your sticker to be 5 inches wide by 3 inches tall at no less than 150 DPI. In pixel terms, this means your full-size sticker design should be at least 750 pixels by 450 pixels. Of course, the maximum size for a challenge submission is 640 pixels on any side, so you should submit a resized version of your original, but save your original.

2. By submitting to either of these challenges, you grant DPChallenge (Challenging Technologies, LLC) full and unrevokable usage rights for your design(s). We owe you no compensation for printing your design. DPChallenge grants you the right to use our logos for the purpose of designing this sticker, but you may not use them for any other purpose without our written permission. You are not permitted to distribute our logo, but you are welcome to show your design as part of your personal portfolio.

3. Placings in these challenges will be considered but will not be the determining factor in which designs are chosen to be printed. The final decision will be made by the site administrators. Factors not limited to readability and printability will be considered.

4. Your submission need not contain a digital photograph. There are also no editing rules for this challenge.

5. Your design must contain a readable url for the site for which you are submitting your design -- that is www.dpchallenge.com or www.dpcprints.com.

6. Users whose designs have been chosen will be contacted within one week of the end of voting for their original, 150+ DPI file.

7. Because we're using our existing challenge structure for this contest, you are limited to one entry per challenge, so choose your best design! If you absolutely must submit two entries, con a friend into submitting for you, but do not create another account to do so.

8. You are welcome to use the following files and design notes for each of the site, but you are not limited to do so. You are also welcome to modify any of the designs in the following files to match your design. You are not, however, permitted to use these designs for any other purpose than for the design of your sticker without our written consent.

- DPChallenge: [Logo in EPS format] [Logo in BMP format]. The 'DPChallenge' part of our logo is in Impact. The 'a digital photography contest' line is in Arial. The ribbon logo can be found in the EPS file (the color may need to be adjusted).

- DPChallenge Prints: [Logo in PSD format] [Logo in BMP format]. The 'DPChallenge' part of our logo is in Impact. The 'Prints!' part is Marydale. The 'www.dpcprints.com' part is Arial.

9. You are not limited to any specific amount of colors. If your design is chosen, then we will require that send us your design in a lossless format such as BMP.

10. Your design should be attractive and easy to read. If you wish to use any photographs in your design, you must obtain permission from the owner.

Feel free to discuss any ideas for designs, slogans, or graphics in this thread. If you're not participating, you may be able to give someone a good idea to start with.

Best of luck!

Drew

Where can we find the eps for the ribbon logo? Is that available or do we need to re-create it?

Is this supposed to double as a mailing label or anything, or is it stricly a 5x3 (3x5 vertical OK?) color advertisement?
04/24/2003 04:11:23 AM · #7
yeah, ditto the above about the files.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to extend this one for a week or two to give people more time to think about and execute their ideas.

I agree with you... one week isn't much time .... 2 would be a whole lot better!!

As gGeneral mentioned, does it matter if it's 3x5 or 5x3??

Wouldn't a free membership be worth our time and effort put into this design?
04/24/2003 10:10:42 AM · #13
I think to make this fair one of two things should happen...
1. Let us keep the rights to our own artwork
2. Compensate us for full rights

It's not really fair to ask for full rights and not to compensate the artist of the designs being used for printing.

I would think a Special Thanks page here on the //www.dpchallenge.com and even the //www.dpcprints.com site would be appropriate for a list of the winners and a credit at least for those who are chosen for the sticker ideas .. that way if we do get chosen we would have a way of tracking it and putting a reference on a resume or what not :)

i would think you would get a better final product if you lengthened the challenge time to 2 weeks. one week is a bit tight, esp with everything else going on.

Why not? If you don't agree then don't submit, at least they're being upfront about it.
You are always free to send your artwork to the site and ask for money for it outside of the challenge.

- The URLs for the logos have been corrected -- sorry, forgot about those.

- We decided that rather than just design the stickers ourselves, we'd let people who wanted to show off their creativity help the site. The stickers are not going to be sold -- they're going to be given away. If you don't think we already give you enough on this site and need to be compensated, then this challenge is not for you. By having your sticker selected design, you will certainly be allowed to use that on your resume. We are simply asking that we maintain the right to be able to print and distribute these stickers without having someone come back and say, "sorry, you can't have that anymore." The winners will be announced in the forums, and I'd certainly be fine with thanking them on the 'about' page.

- Later in this week, if you really feel you cannot participate because you need 2 weeks, make a post here. My thoughts were that those who wanted to participate would find the time to do so, and 2 weeks would just be a waste of time. We're excited to get these stickers printed.

This is the same deal as at Jones Soda, too. I think including a tiny photo credit on the printed pieces is appropriate compensation in a circumstance like this -- a 1 year membership might be nice too. This might open up other design opportunities, and in the marketing biz I think it would be considered a "loss-leader."

Thanks. With 450 photos to vote on, three-four photos to compose, and several people already asking for a longer time, I'd really suggest extend it now or not at all. You don't want to discourage someone now, who might have tried if they'd known they had two weeks...if they find out in six days they'd still only have a week...how about making the deadline Cinco de Mayo (unless you're plotting to sping a speed-challenge on us...)?

I'm just not sure i like the idea of losing all rights to my own artwork. It's mine and I'd like to have the liberty to use it if I would like to do so. Maybe instead of signging over full rights to the artwork, that we agree to give unlimited printing rights to DPC instead. This would make it legal for us to print them ourselves if we'd like to display them in our portfolio or as examples with our resumes. If we sign over full rights to DPC we are no longer legally allowed to print them, even though we created the design ourselves

I dont care about getting compensation for the design, but I want to keep the rights to the design.

Is the usage right we grant you exclusive or nonexclusive?

As far as I understand, that's what the original post says. They want unrevokable "usage" rights. Not full rights, just the right to print it forever, regardless of what we may say in the future.

As far as the free memberships, I was talking about this last night - I don't think it's a good idea. You get into too many problems of "how many winners, what if site council members win, what if current members win?" Drew said - if you want something for the participation, don't participate.

That said, 2 weeks is probably a good idea.

I'm seriously considering just calling this whole thing off. Some people just pick apart everything until it's no fun for anyone anymore. The purpose of this contest is to let you, the users, have your design printed on our free stickers. I never thought you all would pick apart the rules for this challenge, but since you have, I have adjusted the wording to try to better explain the usage rights for this contest. Honestly, if you're someone who is picking apart the wording of this clause, I'd rather you didn't submit, because it sounds like it's just going to come back to haunt us when you pick it apart once your design is chosen. If you want your name credited on your sticker, you're welcome to put it in your design -- I cannot say how that will affect your votes in the challenge.

sigh.

Drew,

If you decide to cancel the challenge due to the nitpicking, I think that there are several people around here who will still submit ideas directly to you for use in this project...

04/24/2003 11:35:17 AM · #25
Drew, I must say that if I were in your shoes, I'd be investing in some economy-sized reefers. It is a shame that people can't just contribute something for the mere fun of it without getting weird about it.
