Many of you knew I was pregnant and having complications. Well, this past Sunday morning I woke up around 4:30 am in labor and only 26 weeks into the pregnancy. I was then life flighted to a hosptial with a neo natal unit where I gave birth to Danny Monday evening. He is only 1 pound 4 ounces. //www2.conemaugh.org/nursery/index.cfm?s
JUST REALIZED I can't direct link you to the photo but you can click on the link for Daniel when you get there.

So far Danny is doing fantastic and I jut want to ask everyone to please keep this little one in your thoughts and prayers. He has a long road ahead of him before I ever get to bring him home.

He is so tiny!!! My thoughts are with you. I was born 10 weeks early and managed to pull through, after spending some time in a humidcrib, and was 4lbs. But that was 41 years ago. They can do so many good things these days. Hang in there.

As a mom of a preemie, I know what the road ahead is like, and I can tell you that it is worth every sleepless night, every false alarm, and every tear because someday soon, his laughter and smiles will outshine all of the hard times. Good luck and God bless!!! :o)

12 3/4 inches and his diapers are about the size of a beer can cozy.

My very best wishes to you Anna... as I am all too familiar with the process you are going through at this moment. Nineteen years ago my spouse delivered a severely premature baby and I spent many a night at the hospital watching, waiting, worrying and being a general pain to the nursing staff.

Today, I have a beautiful 19 year old daughter who is the pride of my life. I will say a prayer for you and your lovely child.

He was a bit bigger than your little guy... right at 4 pounds, born at 32 weeks. I still couldn't hold him for several days which drove me insane. I was in the nursery every time they would let me through the door, just watching him. I had a heart attack every time the nurses would so easily just sort of flop him around and over to change tubing, change diapers, adjust things...it was scary for me but I had to trust that they knew what they were doing. I was told that he would be in the NICU for at least 3 months, and that he had premature lung disease (among other ailments common to preemies), and to expect the best but to be prepared for the worst. I read everything I could get my hands on about premature babies. I never had time to be depressed because I was constantly either reading, watching him and the nurses, or writing in his baby book every single thing that happened during those first harrowing weeks.

He wore an apnea monitor for 4 months after coming home (which was in 2 1/2 weeks, not 3 months...he was a strong little bugger), which really led to a lot of stress. We had several false alarms. But we took infant CPR and were prepared just in case. We never had to use it. He was developmentally behind for a while. He was small, didn't crawl until 10 1/2 months, but then all of a sudden, at 11 months, he was running. Now, at 11 years old, he's 5'3" and 120 pounds. He wears a man's size 7 1/2 shoe and is absolutely a charmer.

Don't give up, don't believe every single dooming bit of info you might hear. Read as much as you can about how to handle preemies, study up on all the terms that the hospital staff might be tossing around so that you know exactly what they are talking about. Many babies born at Danny's weight and gestational age do quite well. Be prepared for all the tests and procedures they will be putting him through, and trust that the nurses and doctors will keep him safe and comfortable while he grows. It won't be long before you will be holding him. Ask about kangaroo care, which (after he is stabilized) is a MOST therapeutic tool for you and for him. Skin-to-skin contact is so important. Touch him as often as they allow you to, even if it's through the portholes of the isolette. Talk to him, make tapes of your voice to play for him even if you aren't there. We did that with our son and I think it really helped. We just used one of those micro-cassette recorders and the nurses would play it between visiting hours for us.

Anyway, I've rambled completely. I know your story will have a happy ending. It seems like it's a long way off, but it passes quickly. Keep us posted and take as many pictures as you can!!

PS... Don't forget to take care of you, too!!! :o)

Hi there,

I wanted to give you my congratulations and support! My daughter was born at 34 weeks, and also spent time in the NICU. She roomed with several other babies, many were born at 1+ pounds...and what they do for our babies is absolutely phenomenal.

You will readily learn many terms and phrases that most moms and dads will never hear of. Your journey will be filled with much love and wonder as your baby reaches new and exciting stages in his development!! All I can say to you, if it is of any value, is that just when the road seems as though it is unbearably long, you WILL have the joy of your baby and this will make you and your new little fighter stronger and closer than you can imagine.

Good luck!!!

Congrats and good luck from me and my family. My son was 10 pounds 12 ounces when he was born, so I don't have a premie story to share, but wanted to wish you luck. *hugs*

The sweetest things always come in small sizes. Chin up, eyes ahead and as Laural says it is worth all the sleepless nights when he say " I love you mommy".

Thinking about Danny, God bless you both.

love, love, love, lots of hugs and of course I shall keep him in my thoughts. Just think of the fun you will have showing the pics to his girlfriends in eighteen years time (if not before!). When we are all thinking of him worldwide, it just has to do something! He's a special baby but to echo other people, do take care of yourself too, Danny doesn't need a worn out Mum when he comes home. And make sure Dad is involved in his care and takes care of himself too.
keep us posted

God bless you, all, Anna, and be with you now and in the days and years to come! What a sweet little baby!

Anna- you and Danny and the family will be in my prayers. May God bless you and Danny. My dad was born in 1935, a twin, and he only weighed if not mistaken a little over a pound along with his twin sister. My dad is now 70 years old, 6' tall and strong. I just wanted to give a little encouragement. Stay strong!
