I submitted a different image to the Fauna challenge... my outtake does not give away my original. Please view the outtake and leave a comment if you have time. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-size image.

Thanks,
Terry

I think you should crop a bit of the right. Maybe just behind the shoulders of the cat.

I would have to agree to crop in some on that side, possibly up to just behind the front shoulder, but the colors in the photo are eye catching, and the detail is fantastic.

Perhaps something like this:

outtage? like power-outtage????

anyhoo, that's a great shot, terry, prolly one of the best i've ever seen from you :) .. exposure is right on, colors and details are great. there's a tiny bit of motion blur but what does one expect from live wild animals :).

i prolly wouldnt crop it quite as far as carsten. maybe such that the head is in the left third imaginary grid-line. can't wait to see your actual submission.

Well, I like CArsten's crop, also. He is moving to the left, and so much of the subject being on the other side in the original sort of gives it an unbalanced feel to me. Sometimes I think we put too much into the rule of thirds and forget some other compositional matters.

It looks to me that the jaguar is looking for prey, but from what i can see of his(or her) eye this prey is just outside of the picture. So i would like to see a composition with a bit more space on the left.
Or am I wrong and is it just going to drink some water?

What do you think about my outtake?

I'm with kandij on this one. If anything, I'd crop a lil horizontally to emphasize 'length' (I miss the the cat's tail).

BTW, what's an outtake? Is it a 'word'?

out·take (n.)

1. A section or scene, as of a movie, that is filmed but not used in the final version.
2. A complete version, as of a recording, that is dropped in favor of another version.
3. An opening for outward discharge; a vent.

I wouldn't crop it that much. You ruined the front arm of the cat by doing that. I'd crop only about 1/2 the body since the body and arm on cats are interesting also. And crop a little of the rocks out but leave all of the water. Like this:

yes, chris's crop is about how i'd do it .. :)

yeah i was wrong it was too much to crop it to just behind the front shoulders, Chris'es crop works well.

Thank you, erudite mavrik. Even my Oxford drew a blank.

The background bothers me, I don't like the murky browny water, but good luck convincing it to pose in a better setting. Water really needs the right light to make it look good.
The cat itself is beautiful and well captured. Chris's crop for me too.

Terry, your shot is is nice. Personally I would like to see more of the eyes of the "tiger". The eyes are the most important detail of an animal shot and the first thing, a viewer is looking at. IMHO the viewer needs to see them to get in connection with the animal.
