How do you guys/gals vote?

Do you have a mental list you go by to vote?

Or is it merely the best pic. (It doesn't matter how far fitch the pic is from challenge or not.)

I usually print the thumb nails, cut them up into individual squares, then throw them down the stair case. the ones that land on the top step get a ten, the ones that land on the bottom step get a one, with all the other numbers in between.

other times i start with a 5 if the pic meets the challenge and adjust up or down based on color, composition, subject, etc. and the most subjective of all if the pic is appealing to me or not.

My grandma (she is 108 and blind)helps me voting, first she gives 1-10 score than I do the fine tuning!

I thought about printing out the thumbnails and throwing numbered darts at them, but at 3-400/week I'd get a sore shoulder...

i give everyone a four

I slam the photo as hard as I can, then rexamine it. If it's still there, having withstood the impact, I give it a 6 or a 7, depending on technical merit only. For an 8, it has to be volatile.
I reserve 9s for one that exhilerates, stimulates awareness and kindles resentment against evil.

I am not qualified to award 10s.

Since everyone else is being silly, I'll answer you: I examine each picture very carefully, and look for: 1) Bad focus. If the pic is extremely blurry and out of focus, they get an extra 2 to 4 points based on how bad it is. 2) Lighting. If the lighting appears that the pic was shot in a closet using a 20watt light source, they get another 1 to 3 points. 3) Subject. If the subject appears to be a shot of the first thing that popped into the photographer's mind, they get a bonus of 5 points. :)

Hope that helps!!

The way I vote?

I go through all the photos giving them a score between 1 and 9 based on:
1) Meets the challenge
2) How pleasing I find the Photo
3) Technical Merit/Difficutly of the shot
(in that order)

I also comment on the photo's as I go through.

After I am done, I go back throught the thumbnails and bump Photos up or down as I see fit. Finally I go through the top Photos and pick out three (usually) photos that I think are 10's.

I will also go through some of the photos, mostly the 8,9 and 10's (but not always) and say (in the comments) what score I gave them. If I think their Photo is really good I like to let them know.

LOL, so was I!!

Actually I rate photos basically the same way as Fiver... The most important thing is that they meet the challenge, however I usually allow a fairly broad interpretation. I usually give less points for extremely common or uncreative shots, and less points also for techinically poor shots (ie. small pics, tilted pics, pixelated, out of focus, bad lighting, poor cropping, unclear subject, etc.).

I give extra points for creative shots (ones you rarely seen before), good Titles that fit the shot, etc. This one is tougher but usually more points if they appeal to me in some way, but I can't tell you exactly what that is... I have to see it to say what I like about it.

I rarely ever give 10's. Maybe one to two at the most in a particular challenge, and almost never give 1's. Maybe one to two "2's", several 3's, etc. If the pic is politically motivated (not the challenge objective) with the intent of sending a message rather then an objective photo, I will give it a 1 every time although I've only seen a few of those. I rarely increase my vote based on borders unless they really enhance the picture. Usually borders don't enhance the pic in my opinion.

I have a few questions that I ask myself as I vote: perhaps the most important of which is 'would I have submitted this?'. What seems like an average photo I give a 5: that could be technically excellent but a dull subject, or great subject technically flawed. Gives me more room to rate the good shots by placing my average lower than the theoretical average of 5.5.

Give 8's to everything that really jumps out at me, and then review these later to rank those shots individually. Only 1 ten per week, to my favourite shot - unless there isn't a favourite shot.

All of which depends on having the time, of course!

There was a thread a few weeks about asking how people vote.
I wrote a long reply on it which I was going to pull into this thread.

Can't find that thread. Anyone remember what it was called and when it was?

Personnally I look at le picture or le photograph in son le profile.
If he/she looks like a frog with a beret holding a baguette in one hand and a camembert or a saucisson in the other one, it gets a 10.
Otherwise merit of le photo, weighted with 'challenge' factor and if it appeals to me.

Wow me too!

(unless they've got a flag in them, then they just get a 1) >:)

Actually, in seriousness, my votes follow this (approximate) level -

If the challenge has been met with a decent shot (but one which does not jump out at me) - 6.

The criteria by which I then alter the vote goes something like:

Up 1 or 2 for a particularly good or inventive idea.
Up maybe 1 for a particularly clever title (which some might argue about but I think it's an important part of the presentation of one's work).
Up 1 or 2 for paricularly striking use of colour.

Down 1 or more if the pic is of poor quality, or I feel the author has made very little attempt to think about the subject of their picture. (e.g. an extremely cliched shot, or perhaps one in which the author seems to have picked the first thing that their eye caught on in the house).
Down 1 or 2 if the main subject of the picture is out of focus.
Down 1 or 2 if the picture seems to have been staged deliberately to give the appearance of being unstaged (sounds crazy, but I think it's noticeable when they are - having said that, I was recently PM'd by a photographer to say this was not so).

And that's about it. Maybe some people might think this scheme is crazy or controversial (God knows I caused some controversy recently without really meaning to), but it's mine and I stand by it.

Hope someone found this of interest,

I try to see what the photographer was trying to accomplish with the shot, and then base my vote on whether or not they succeeded in being clear in their communication. I also give highest votes to those photos that show some uniqueness and are not average, are technically good, and that "move" me in some way. To be moved, there is usually some exciting use or capture of light. These photos often cause me to think or emote "beyond" the image somehow.

I'll usually end up with somewhat of a bell curve with several 10s, a few more 9s, a few more 8s etc. I rarely give 1s or 2s--only if it looks like the photographer was being out-of-line sloppy and wasting my time.

I also look at the images at least twice, and fairly carefully. In fact I had several 7s this week that I moved up just because I looked at them more carefully.

Being new here and not knowing how other people vote - this is what I came up with for myself.

First and foremost, did the photographer meet the challenge? That is what's fun about this site - can you make yourself take a photo that you might not ordinarily take - can you follow directions? Meeting the challenge gets you an automatic 5 - then I move up or down from there depending on:

1- technical merit
2 - composition
3 - originality
4 - personal taste

I don't judge titles (this is a photography challenge not a writing challenge) or borders (unless a border really distracts from a photo). Like some of the others, I go back at the end and adjust my 8's, 9's, and 10's if needed.

I liked the funny answers better, but I"m not that clever!
