That second shot is certainly effective at meeting the challenge, but I think I still "like" your original submission a bit better. Love your set-up shot...maybe we should have a challenge for best "The Making Of..." photo, or a split-frame where we have a challenge photo and one of its set-up sharing the space... |

Gordon,
I love your retake much, much better. Several reasons:
1) While still abstract, I know what I'm looking at. 2) The color of the wine really show through this time. 3) There's a lot more contrast between the dark areas of the image and the areas that are lit up-- in this one the negative space really does a great job of emphasizing your subject. 4 The image is so smooth, I could easily imagine seeing this all glossy as a full-page wine ad in GQ or the like. |

Gordon,
Great picture and brilliant set-up... and a good use of 'Principles of Neural Science' :-)

Thanks - it is a lot closer to what I had in my head - though that originally had both sides of the glass lit up like this - I got that to work in the end too, but still prefer this single sided version
(light on both sides, by having the black mask on the softbox in the middle, to create two thin strips, and then position carefully :))
This version also had a bit of spot-editing done to it, to take out a black fleck in the wine, and a small reflection from the camera, so wouldn't be legal for entry here (and the dimensions are wrong) but it is something I'm much happier with and I learned a whole load about lighting trying to work it out :)

Thank you - especially as you took _my_ favourite pic from the negative space challenge. I loved cowspace.

This is an elegant photo. It can also be viewed as an abstract image.
smooth edges, good contrast, well defined shapes I like this retake.
thanks for sharing your lighting techniques........

The retake is leaps and bounds better then your original submission! So much classier and more professional, better alignment, contrast, everything is superior!

I'm really curious now - what is it you like about the first one more than the second ? I personally feel that the second is much better than the one before and much closer to what I was trying to achieve, so I would be very interested if you could articulate what you prefer about the first one.
thanks, Gordon

Gordon,
That was a first impression made early this morning, when I am known t be not at my best. I have to go pick up my kid and go to work for a few hours, but I will go back and look at both images carefully later tonight and email you with any new thoughts...feel free to send me an email reminder if you get impatient as I sometimes feel like I'm juggling more things than Terry... --Paul |
