Is a 40D not a good enough camera for stock photography? Any advice? Ever happen to anyone recently that's shooting at 200 to 400 ISO in RAW and saving in 300dpi?

you need to check all your file at 100% to check for noise....stock sites do not like noise in there images! I shoot at 100 ISO and check every image at 100% and sometime I ever use noise software like neatimage to fix the problems. Keep trying! you will do it!

Crestock is very strict with reviews.

A good site to start with is Dreamstime, Fotolia, or Stockxpert.

From there try Shutterstock (a big earner for many) but be extra careful with noise on Shutterstock. Like melking, I even use noise reduction on some ISO 100 shots if they have a lot of sky in them and it played with the curves. You can also down sample the images to improve sharpness and noise.

I juste got approved by IStockPhotos (this very morning). By reading this thread, I can see there's is some hope. I know I won't quit my day job for that. But I just finished university, and if I want to pay off my debt and buy a house before the next 20 years, every penny counts.

depending on what you want. If you want to quit your day job with microstock photography you could :)

edit: oh yeah, and congrats on getting accepted!

I've only got a balance of about $2, but I've only been doing it for a week and only have a few images. My way of thinking is that any money for images usually sitting on my hard drive doing nothing is nice! If you have lots of high quality images ready to upload you should do fine.

I have started to sign up on a couple of these sites and notice they are asking for a copy of Photo ID. Has anyone had concerns regarding this with all the doom&gloom about identity theft?
06/18/2009 10:30:42 AM · #281
I can't quite get onto iStockPhoto ... first rejection was because the images were too similar!! Second rejection due to only meeting the minimum standard ... gotta wait another week to try again! Will have to take some new shots I think!

Got onto Shutterstock a month ago and have 81 images there and have made $25 so well impressed so far :)

I was a little wary about sending ID but as these seem to be pretty major sites I thought it would be ok. I took a photo of my driving licence and resized it to about 1000 pixels so it is readable but I don't think it could really be usable for anything.

This thread is really great, I just signed up to fotila and I'll try a couple more as well I think!!

make sure to check out dreamstime. Stockxpert is good too but it's destiny seems a bit in the air after Getty purchased them. Other than that Veer seems to be all the rage lately.

My shot is currently on the front page of shutterstock ... that'll be why it's been downloaded 60 times then :)

eta .. it's the frog shot for the "New Artists" bit at the bottom

Dropped of quite a bit :) I'm making about $5 a month from the 90 images I have on there.

I make about the same in istock from 34 images. I make a couple of $ a month from the rest fotila/big stock/dreamstime, it's not much but I've not yet actually shot anything specifically for stock and it's covered the cost of the workshops I've done to shoot the images in the first place :)

Bobonacus you need to start uploading more....$5 from 90 image sis not to bad starting out! even if you upload 1 or 2 images a week you will start to see a difference in your downloads....give it a try!

Hi all, was reading this forum thread since searching stock photography and wanted to ask you all a few questions.

1. Do you enjoy stock photography?
2. How long have you been apart of stock photography?
3. How much have you been making on each site per month and with how many uploaded pictures?
4. What do you typically put up pictures of?

Thanks in advance, hope to hear how you all have been doing now! I've noticed some of you posting from late 2005's to now so I hope I get a good amount of responses.

Yes I do enjoy stock photography. I don't do it for a living. It's more like making some money with my hobby.

I started about 2 years ago.

As I don't do it for a living, I don't have to setup ad schedule for shooting specific themes. If I need some inspiration then I usually look through the list "What type of images do sell?" on this page: //stock.hlehnerer.com/Resources.html

Most important for me is that I have fun with the photography and editing.

Thanks a ton, Oboy! Yeah I take photos as a hobby but really was hoping to eventually make $100-300 a month just for extra spending cash (say for things like new lenses or for editing software) just buy taking pictures of things I love. Thank you, I appreciate the link to that website. I really am curious to see what really sells well.

I just started and have 30-40 images up. Some are pending some approved and some rejected. CanStockPhoto pretty much accepts everything it seems and I have quite a few views with only being up for less then a week.

Yeah, Canstock accepts most things you send to them. Their sales have picked up a bit in the last couple years for me but they are still a little slow. They are pretty easy to upload to though so it is generally worth your time if you already have the images to upload.

Hi!

Thanks for starting a thread like this. Finally fun to see real numbers about real people, not some eBook selling crap ;).

I have been doing stock imagery for 2 years. Basically I own a small advertising company, and since it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s small, my employee sometimes have free time on her hands so I make them create vector illustrations out of photos or drawings.

I thought before that by creating vector you sometimes get more $$ out of a sale (sold 3 vector format on shutter form 23$ each (that with comission taken).

My portfolio is now at 290 vectors which I would rate as medium quality work (photorealistic work isolated on white background). They are not all good sellable stock images tho :(.

Here are numbers:
2009: Made 609.05$ out of 5 sales agency(Dreamstime, Shutterstock, Fotolia, BigStock and 123rf). Had around 150 images at that time, started building the portfolio in January.

In 2010, around 1000$:
Shutterstock: 400$
Dreamstime: 285$
Fotolia: 125$
123rf: 90$
BigStock: 80$
StockXpert which closed to public after I uploaded: 25$
Around 200 images at that time on my portfolio.
That averages 5$ per image per year, so I guess vector art is getting more as there is less competition.

This year in 2011 I start the year with 280 images, and will add to my agency CanStock, Crestock, Clustershot, Alamay, Shutterpoint, Veer (if they accept me), CutCaster, Stockphotopro. Vectorstock.com is too cheap (sell VECTOR FORMAT for 1$ instead of 10 or 20$ you can get at other agency, vectorstock leaves you with 25 cents.).

I am seriously thinking about gradually closing my company to go full time in stock photo (will upgrade my portfolio with stock photo).

Seeing your numbers here helped find it realistic to do this for a living. As I already work from home, I think I can have the will to work the 5 days a week or more it requires to make a living out of stock photo.

For those interested in creating vector or digital art, you can see an example of my porftolio here, which to me is not great, but I plan to upgrade quality when I myself will create the image instead of my employee "passing time".

Cannot post URL since I am new but:
www[DOT]dreamstime[DOT]com/Cheech95_more-latest-adition_pg1

Hope this thread helps other figures things out. I plan on making around 2000$ in 2011, and if I get the guts to do it, starting doing this full time.

Keep this thread going I found this very motivating!

It's kind of refreshing to see actual numbers instead of "it can be done" sort of stuff.

There are more than one ways to earn from Stock photography sites too. Some monetize "this" way while some "that" way. Apart from the numbers, I am interested in having your insights over the "different" ways best sellers here use to earn instead of just putting up the pictures on a stock photo site and hoping for the hungry buyers to come in?

I recently found a photo of mine on the cover of a 2011 Vietnam Veterans calendar. It gives my name on the photo credit. Does a stock agency release the name of the photographer? Or was the photo "borrowed"?

Try browsing your stock agency(ies) as if you were a designer looking for a photo -- I think the photographer's name will be displayed along with the photo in most cases ... it's not so much a matter of the agency "releasing" your name as probably one of posting it everywhere to give proper attribution.

In most cases photo-credits are considered a good thing -- is there some reason you object to it appearing in this context?
