Well I did not think the raise was to bad...I was only thinking we would get a $.05 raise like last time! But I ended up getting a $.08 raise....So it is not to bad for me!

is anyone here making 'real' money ?

today is my last working paid day .. & effectively after this they close the doors
so i will have plenty of time soon ;)
I believe my images are good enough for stock & with more time i believe i can make many images ...

I'm not one of the superstars of stock but I started in March 2008 and already have earnings of just over $100 per month with less than 150 images.

The real money earners have 2000 or more. Folks like Yuri Arcurs with in excess of 10,000 images earns $60K or more per month from Microstock.

I had thousands of great images when I started. However I quickly found out that shooting for stock isn't the same. 99% of my images aren't good stock. You'll learn about noise and artifacts from the start. Shutterstock and iStock will let you know real fast just how bad you are. I don't mean that you are bad, but images that you think are masterpieces will get rejected for noise, artifacts or "No commercial value"

My first month was very hard. Rejection after rejection really had me down. Then after reading about stock for many hours I got. My acceptance rate went from about 30% to 70%.

I wouldn't try Shutterstock or iStock until you get 20-30 images approved at Fotolia and Dreamstime. Be really careful with Shutterstock. You have to submit 10 images for initial review and 7 of the 10 must pass. If they don't, you will have to wait 30 days to re-submit to them. iStock requires only 3, but they will reject the 3 they accepted for initial review if you're not careful. I still can't figure that one out!

Bottom line answer is yes...if you have the images. Give it a try, you won't know unless you do.

You have the same 130 shots on all 6 sites? I didn't think people did that, or at least not to this degree. Cool, now I know. Thanks. Oh and the $ quotes are what you have made to date, not your monthly income. I hope I'm wrong, am I?

Two weeks ago I decided to try out some stock sites and sutterstock is by far the best at selling images right away. I am guessing the other sites pick up after you have a bigger portolio?

You can use the same photos at different sites as long as you do not check mark any as exclusive. You also have to be careful selecting the right license. If you select for an image RM with on agency, then you cannot select for the same image with another agency RF.

If you upload an image to PhotoShelter, then you are agree not to upload the same image on any micro stock sites. If you upload an image to PantherMedia and have the same image on micro stock sites, then you have to select the 30% commission.

Always read the "Contributor's Agreement" and "Terms & Conditions".

But the question is: has anyone made any sales at PhotoShelter or PantherMedia?

I have not made any sales with them so far. But I was reading in other forums that some do have sales.

what are the options other than the 30% on PantherMedia?

50% commission if you do not have the same image on a micro stock site.

panthermedia is actually an allright site for sales, but uploading is a little time consuming.

sites like shutterstock, dreamstime, fotolia, stockxpert, 123RoyaltyFree, istock are better

Yes, the photo is still yours and you can do whatever you like with it. Even put it for sale on more than one stock site.

Some sites require exclusivity, some offer it as an option, and many/most do not require it.

Most sites offering "Rights-Managed" images (Corbis, Getty, Alamy, PhotoShelter) will not allow you to post the same image at a "MicroStock" site like Shutterstock or Fotolia, and some will not accept you as a contributor if you have any images posted at such sites.

Sometimes a customer will require exclusivity as a condition of licensing the image, in which case you may not be able to use it any more, but should get paid a lot for it.

My Shutterstock referrer link ...

Micro Stock is all about Time. It's definitely NOT a get rich quick program. Upload. Upload and Upload more. Over time you will start to make money. One Stock video that I have uploaded two years ago and have only sold about 1 per month on average still have earned me over $100-200. Not bad for a couple hours of work. Some will be superstars and some uploads will be duds. It's ALWYAS about getting as many quality images or video into the system. Over time it will happen. After two years of part-time weekend uploading, I now make thousands of dollars every month. It has been hard work, but if you just keep uploading quality work through the good AND bad times, you will make money. The best part about stock is while you are busy uploading your new work, your old work is busy making you money.

Good luck with your Journey.

Somebody on shuttersock: how did I just make $20.60 on one down load of one photo? Is it a typo?

A total guess here: Could someone have purchased and extended licence for that image?
09/16/2008 02:35:02 PM · #273
yep - that's what it was - extended license. Could have been exclusive too if they had wanted because the othe stock sites turned it down.

While I am building up my business, I want to make some extra money on the side, and I am FINALLY considering stock photography. I tried to submit to one once (Crestock), but ALL my 300dpi, hi-res images were denied for "low quality." Bah! I didn't get it at all, and they never wrote back with reasoning.

Is a 40D not a good enough camera for stock photography? Any advice? Ever happen to anyone recently that's shooting at 200 to 400 ISO in RAW and saving in 300dpi?
