I agree, one nice thing about microstock is that even if you quit taking pictures for a while you still get earnings and downloads. Usually at about the same rate. One picture can make money for quite some time, without doing anything.

Yeah... I was approved with PD before I noticed that (I read it as relating on a per image basis when I signed up which I though was fair) and while I have zero interest in the micro sites, I completely agree. I still get all the emails & stuff and you know, it's interesting to see some of the stuff people look for now and then but nothing more.

Interesting list of stock sites

//aphotoeditor.com/2008/02/27/stock-photo-agencies/

There's a tendency to just focus on the big generic agencies, but maybe these niches are better targets for your style ?

Question:

If you submit a photo to one of the stock photos site, i liked shutterstock seemed nice, am i allowed to still sell the photo on my own and host it on my website? Or would i give up the copyright to the image to the stock photo company?

Unless the stock site expressly forbids this, you are free to sell your photo wherever you like. Some stock sites offer incentives if you agree to use their site exclusively. The copyright, no matter what, always belongs to you.

What seems to be the best stock photo site for a first time learner?

yes if you submit to shutterstock you can still use your photos as you wish! you don't give up the copyright!

I would say the best sites for you the start with would be:

ShutterStock
Fotolia
Dreamstime

there are easy to upload to...so I would start with them first!

I second Melissa's list and would add iStockphoto as well. If I were going to pick just one of those to start with, it would probably be Shutterstock.

So I think I am going to try istock, shutterstock, and maybe alamy for a few select good photos. So Im under the understanding that with istock and shutterstock i can still sell images and do whatever i want with them? Is that true for alamy too? I know your shouldn't post the same images with alamy and istock with the micro versus macro but can i still sell images i post with alamy on my own site and ect?

Shutterstock can be hard to get accepted to, I would suggest trying dreamstime or fotolia to start things out and then move to istock and shutterstock once you feel you have the hang of it.

If you are selling your images as Royalty Free on alamy you can easily sell them other places as well as long as none of the places you are selling require exclusivity then you are fine. When images are sold as rights managed things get more confusing and although often times you CAN sell them at numerous places at the same time, it is often smarter not to.

There is also lots of alamy questions answere here if you want to check it out

I would agree with the 4 recently mentioned sites to start with. I created a microstock website where you can compare earnings from some of the main sites. The same 4 are also my top 4 earners. Fotolia and Dreamstime are great starter sites, since you don't have to go through the test review process. Shutterstock is really fun since you get lots of downloads and you see them right away (helps boost confidence that this will work). Istock is a great earner.

Being a photographer who does stock photography can pay. Here are some ideas to research:

1. This is a good article:
//www.diyphotography.net/how-to-make-money-from-micro-stock-photography

2. Do extensive Google and Yahoo research and find the right companies to sell to.

3. Go to a Website such as //www.xcavator.net/ and see what people are searching for. Do some searches from the perspective of a stock photography searcher and see what kinds of photos come up. Click through to the sites and see what prices they go for.

Hope this helps.

how about crestock?

They are either going to get quite successful or bust within the next year I think, although I am thinking that the chances lie with success. this month they are going to earn more for me than either bigstock or 123RF. Their upload system is one of the better ones, or perhaps the best..... so what are you waiting for :)

Oh yeah, did i mention they have a referral program :)
here is my link if you want to sign up under me

here a update on my stock sites:

In teams of sales

1. Shutterstock
2. Fotolia
3. Dreamstime
4. Istockphoto
5. Stockxpert
6. Bigstockphoto
7. 123 Royalty Free

Shutterstock is way above the rest in sales....I wish the other sites would pick up :)
04/24/2008 02:34:19 AM · #244
for me shutterstock is ahead but fotolia is a close second most of the time.

Shutterstock is giving a raise!!!! it will be announced today!
05/13/2008 09:41:05 AM · #247
yeah but how much? .05 an image?
It would be nice if they would make it like maybe a 1.00 at least being that they are making a fortune on our images.

With Fotolia, I've had one image sell MANY times. I need to get off my duff and get more listed. I've made anywhere from $0.50 to $4.00 (I think) per sale. Not too shabby.

They are the #2 stock site, according to their PR.

That raise sucks in my opinion, but its helped make my decision to give IStock a chance. I'll start uploading to I.S. from now on and will go exclusive as soon as i qualify. I'm glad i at least have some images at Istock, but i was hoping SS would have offered an exclusive rewards program. I really dont have the time to upload to multiple agencies, so I'll begin phasing out SS.

I also think when that subscription model kicks in at IS on may 26 that SS is going to feel it.

it will be really interesting to see how the istock subscription model works and what kind of payments we end up getting from it.

Shutterstock is still my top performer and the raise will only increase their lead. I am disappointed with the raise, however as long as they are my top performer I am hardly in a position to complain about their business practices.
