I cant see where we have actually done a bird challenge & I'm not counting rubber ducky's here either. There was a thread challenge Bird(s) that has resulted in some excellant examples of bird photography but no actual Bird Challenge. So how about an open challenge for the birds?

"Bird shooters" are a very small but avid subset of the larger community. It takes a certain kind of insane dedication to do consistently good bird pictures, plus seriously competent equipment with long reach. So I'm not sure how broad an appeal this would have.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be wild birds. It could be zoo birds, like flamingoes (or is it flamingos? -- don't tell anybody I'm a teacher!!!!) or pet birds. Some pet stores will allow you to photograph their birds.

I agree that a bird challenge would appeal only to a few. Perhaps it could be done as a "special" challenge, something in addition to the regular weekly challenge.

There seems to be just enough folks trying bird photography to do this.

I, for one, would welcome the chance to embarrass myself, as I have recently started pursuing birds.

I'm thinking just the opposite. The real challenge isn't a caged, captive, zoo, wild park or pet bird, but the wild free flying, walking, swimming, soaring, etc... ones. More difficult by far, but are available anywhere and everywhere. Van

True, there are obviously serious "bird shooters" amongst us with all the wizzy bits attached to their cameras but for the rest of us, myself included, I think of all challenges as an opportunity to go out & try something different that I might otherwise not have considered going out to photograph. And there is definetly no shortage of subjects to photograph.

A bird challenge would be just fine.... I am for it. I would also like seeing a dedicated bird gallery on this site.

I think almost everyone has taken bird pictures of one kind or another. This is a great challenge suggestion. I predict it will appeal to many of us and will get a very healthy numbers of entries. Let's do it.

Count me in. The middle of migration is the best time for pics. Breeding colors are awesome.

Some of my bird shots taken with non-DSLR cameras.

I'm sure others could add many better than these.

I agree. I also suggested a bird challenge a week ago, and there's lots of postings there already, so there's a lot of interest.
