| Currently at 4.4+. Outside looking in could mean a lot of things and I don't think some are taking it that way. I'm happy with my picture and entry. IMO it meets the challenge and is good. So the score don't bother me. |

Well this one is frustrating for me as I really like the picture and thought it would do well. Lately I've been getting not such great results and it's beginning to be frustrating. Sigh.

Second challenge. I will be so happy if I get 5.0 or better because this is all new to me. So, far I am almost there. Common people leave comments though. I got 1 comment on last photo. How can people learn without the comments!

Hmm.. the opposite for me; my entry is running a fraction UNDER my 'Five' entry, despite the fact that I wasn't very happy with my 'Five' entry (I only submitted it to have an update button :-) ) but I was really happy with my 'Looking In' entry.
Just goes to show what a fickle bunch the DPC voters are. I've decided to leave the next challenge until the last 10 minutes and just throw any old rubbish in - on previous experience that should get me a blue ribbon!

Sorry, that logic just doesn't compute for me. Maybe what you meant was that pictures you personally considered good, the DPC community might not, where as photos you considered bad, the community might like?
I reckon instead of waiting until the last minute for the next challenge, just try to shoot what you'd consider as bad photos, and submit them whenever. No need to wait until 10 minutes before the deadline. Choose the worst rubbish you've got, and who knows...The more time you spend on choosing your worst rubbish, maybe the score will be higher. Who knows?
This, btw, doesn't make the voters a fickle bunch (although I agree any subset of viewers could be considered fickle given specific contexts and perspectives). It just means that your perception levels are inversely related to that of the "norm" within DPC. Just my two bobs...

Totally agree. I'm always staggered when I throw in what I consider to be second rate shots which get really high scores. |

Hmm... it wasn't meant to be a deep meaningful critique on the DPC voting masses, but...!
"Fickle: Characterized by erratic changeableness or instability". I think I'll stand by my original statement - the voters as a block are erratic and unpredictable; I'd challenge any single person to look at the entries and accurately predict the top 3. And that top 3 would probably change if the vote was a month later :-)

Agreed - my "late night" challenge was taken when drunk, when trying to impress a friend with my new camera. I was not going to enter it, thinking "better no entry than a low scoring entry", but it was my only late night shot in the timeframe and my fiancee told me that I might as well. It is so far my second or third best scorer and someone's favourite!

I disagree slightly: after the first dozen or so votes, my score settles down and tends to move less than 0.3 points throughout the challenge. That is the only reason why the update shows the score to four decimal points - you would not get excited very often if shown one decimal place, as you might only see a change of 0.1 point only once during the voting period - whereas I somehow get excited by 0.001 improvement fairly regularly...!
The winners often seem to win by a margin of around, or greater than 0.3. Unless they have vastly more wild scoring experiences than me, there primacy must be identifiable early on, from a relatively small number of votes. Thus, even a small sample of DPC votes is a good indication of a winning shot. From that, I conclude that the DPC voters as a whole, or in groups of, say, 20, are reasonably consistent in their voting patterns.
However, one DPC voter will not necessarily be consistent in their voting patterns (I certainly am not). Equally, one person could not identify a winning shot by him/herself. This is an example of the whole being much greater (in terms of consistency) than the constituent parts.
Now, if you could only identify conclusively what the voting patterns were...

Ditto here.Outside photo is way better than my five - yet Five is scoring higher and I took it quickly and at the last minute. Maybe folks are scoring low coz they're worried about their photo.(Though that doesn't make much sense.) I scored the majority of them quite high. I personally found the quality quite good for most of them. |

well i didnt enter the challenge but from what i can see, is either people "got" the challenge or just took a photo of anything. I've rated 107 photos and i've only given one 10 so far. I did see a couple in the thumbnails that looked pretty good but havent got to those yet.

I'm running at 4.6, mine is suffering from "How is this outside looking in?" because they can't read my description to realize that it is just that... looking at the subject of the photo from outside of where the subject is. |

Thats the problem, "got" to you could mean something else to the person taking the photo. Once you see some of the descriptions of the photos i'm sure you will "get" them. Of course, by then... you would have already given the shot a low score. |

| I am just in awe in how bad my photo is going... it's my lowest scoring photo ever... and I thought it was good! Oh well, I love it and am having an 11x14 print made of it for my office. =) I just hope it scores above a five. |

My wife and I were browsing through the entries last night. When we reached one particular photo, we both said, "Clarmore" in unison. FWIW, I have an entry in this one, too, and it's well below my average. ;-)

haha!!! I know, I couldn't resist! I wasn't going to enter, then turned around me and saw that shot. The title says it all =)
At least I'm not the only one with an entry well below their average... but I'm sorry it's happening to so many of us! Oh well, they'll be more challenges =) |

IMO I think a lot of voters are limiting them selves to narrow a field of view on what this challenge is about. You don’t have to be looking through glass, windows, doors [open or closed] and anything physical to be on the outside looking in.
This is one of those challenges that I believe you are going to have to look at the quality of the picture and put more weight on that than wondering if it meets the challenge. Most everything meets the challenge. I could go on with examples but don’t want to endanger anyone’s entry. When voting just think about it. There are some good shots in this challenge. And you may not like the effect or the artistry of the photo and choose to vote low. That’s ok; we all have our opinion but at least leave a comment why.
