| I'm really having quite a time with the current fauna challenge. As many people have commented on...wild animals just don't pose well and above all, they don't like (and would be dangerous anyway, in most cases) to come close to you. I don't have any fancy lenses like the pro wildlife photographers do, so I find myself shooting with what zoom I do have on my camera and then attempting to crop. In the process, I wind up with an animal severly out of focus and can't seem to fix it in post processing to make it look good. Any suggestions??? Thank-you in advance. |

Well for one you could try and find slower moving animals :) But seriously, have you thought about visiting a zoo? There you'll at least have a large variety of animals to choose from, and it's much easier to shoot an elephant than a squirrel. Using a tripod when shooting zoom shots will also help.
As for post processing, I don't think there's much you can do.

I read this on a Nikon forum from Dpreview.com, and it was about shooting flying ducks, and you would have to adjust for your camera.
Setting your camera on a tripod, will obviously help. Set up the camera for aperture priority (you can choose what you like, but a reccomended setting was over f6 to have the greatest DOF possible). Set the focus to landscape or infinity, whichever yours has. And adjust the manual focus all the way out (don't use auto focus), so that it is focused to infinity. This is reccomended because, the autofocus takes more time and has a hard time catching the item, especially wild animals. Panning along with the animal works great too. The biggest thing to remember to do is, being quiet and unobtrusive.

I got these shots at the Atlanta Zoo not long ago (outside of the challenge dates). A little sharpening and they became decent shots. I spent about 40 minutes watching the tigers and taking every shot that I could. These two were among the best.

| Dave, those are great tiger shots. I especially like the one where he seems to be looking right at you and stocking you. We do, actually, have a zoo here in Billings. I've never been to it. I guess that this is a good time to see what we have. Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. |
