Will be getting a Canon 20D tomorrow.
For sure I want a 70 - 200 mm F2.8, but what other lenses...... |

Really depends on what type of photography you take or plan to take.

| I would think a flash, nice tripod, teleconverter would be something to buy afterwards before the lens craze really starts. |

EF 50mm 1.8 MKII
For the Short end I just got the Tamron SP 17-35mm 2.8-4 which thus far is a pretty sharp lens.

ED: I have the 70-200mm 4/L and love the heck out of it, also have Kenko PRO 1.4x 300 DG TC that I use with both the 50 and the 70-200 and works quite well.

I like my 24-70mm/2.8L the 50/1.8 is great...I'm personnally looking at the 30mm/1.4 Sigma is supposed to be putting out soon and one of the lenses in the 10-20 range. I currently have the 35/2 and like that one alot too... You should like the 70-200/2.8L

I think the coverage the Zeus has, stated in interview is perfect--
17-40 F/4L, 50 F/1.8, and the 70-200 F/2.8, along with a canon converter..
I am happy with my setup (Kit 18-55, 50, 70-200 F4, 1.4 converter), but I do want longer.. |

I agree...I have just about the same lenses (my 70-200 is f4) and I think they're great.

Sorry to bust everyone's bubble, but there are no must have lenses. It really depend on your needs. What kind of photography do you intend to use your lenses for? What is your budget?

I'd say something all around, like the Kit 18-70mm that came with my D70. For long range shooting 70-200mm or 70-300mm. Many people here seem to love their prime 50mm 1.8, cheap and effective in may situations. I like the 18-70mm for walk around and when I can't carry too much stuff.
Outside of a Macro lens, which for some people have limited use, those should cover many or almost all of the bases, for average use.

I have a very tight budget, and even tighter if the wife is aware of any expenditures...
On a tight budget?
Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 28-80 3.5-5.6, Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO ($360 total for all). The kit lens is decent, and the cheapest/widest combo.
Got mo money?
canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR Di, canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM - total about $1035
Got lotso money?
Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L and EF 70-200 2.8 IS - total about $2900
And you might want a 10-20 range wide angle, a 100 range 1:1 macro lens, and a good flash (canon 580 or metz 54)
This Site has good reviews in a comparable, rated format.

So, if you were only to buy one lense, would that one to buy? Just for all purpose general stuff.

Tamron has a 28-105...nice range, price, value. canon has their 28-135 IS lens, but it is a bit heavy. I hear good things about the Tokina 28-200 from users but the reviews i have read, while overall favorable, still do not impress me. I don't like the sample photos i have seen, but that might just be me - as you can tell, with my beer budget i try to stay with a beer taste. I know from past experience, if i fall in love with an L lens, I will be sooo disappointed with the lenses i have that i may give up altogether.

extension tubes were a must for me, so If ya like real macros, extension tubes.

Does anyone make a wide-zoom whose wide is <= 18mm and whose tele-photo is 50mm or preferbly greater that is rated at f/2.8
As most digitals 24mm is not all that wide. I mean, yes, I'd love a 14mm-70mm f/2.8 but doubt such exists. |

| Canon 17-85. It's not f/2.8, but it is image stabilized. |
