For those of you who are not pro's, do you tend to carry your camera with you wherever you go (within reason, not to work daily)?

I am always a bit concerned about leaving $2k worth of equipment lying around in my car when I go various places, but I so often see ideal photographs in so many locations that I am torn...

Do I take along the gear at unknown levels of risk (is the <walk from> the parking lot at that baseball game really safe)?

Do you forego the possible photo ops to reduce the risk? Just take your camera out on specific photo-op trips?

I'd like to hear from people how you deal with taking your equipment around.

Wade,
I am a professional and yes I always have my kit with me. What I would suggest to you is if you are nervous leaving the cameras in the car, buy a decent point and shoot and keep with you. No more missed photo ops! Just make sure it has the pixels you need and a big enough optical zoom for whatever you may encounter.

I pretty much have my camera kit with me all the time; I like to go take photos after work sometimes, and occasionally go out at lunch time, etc.

I am lucky to have secure parking during the day at work, but more importantly I have insurance covering my kit from theft. Mine comes in the form of an extension on my house insurance but if you are not a pro I understand it is dirt cheap regardless. I don't know all the details on that, but talk to your insurance agent and get some info.

My personal take on this is that I did not invest this much in camera gear only to be worried if it can leave the house. But I can certainly understand the other point of view.

I carry my camera everywhere on ALL trips, dinners, parties, vacations, etc., and I never leave it out of my sight. It's either in my hands or in a bag I'm wearing or within arm's reach.

Nope!
Although there are very, very occasionally moments when I wish I had it with me I know from experience that if I had it with more often I'd mostly just find myself getting annoyed with having to keep an eye on it and haul it around given how seldom I used it.
I am intending to get a small compact for carrying around when I don't think I'll need the main camera, though.

I carry mine with me all the time, my friends even tease me and say it is a purse since I have EVERYTHING in it...hey one never knows when you may need a sewing kit in the field to stitch up a nasty branch cut or something lol. I don't leave it in the car unless I'm at like the store or something...it sits here under my desk at work. I have heard a good deterant is to find an old cooler and place them in it in your car, and if you wrap your camera in towels it is supposed to help protect from the heat too. I haven't done it but I usually cover it with the tons of crap in my car.

every time i step out of my house my camera bag is attached. the crime rate where i live(S.E. kentucky) is very low so i dont worry about my camera in the vehicle while im in wal-mart all that much. i also place it out of sight (in a vehicle with very dark tinted windows) i really only have $400 invested in my hobby right now but im sure when i can afford to have the D10 i will still have my camera attached no matter where i go. I have had to miss too many "prize winning" photos not to have it with me all the time.

I bring mine to work daily. The only time I don't take it with me is if it's raining, or if I'm just going shopping with my wife. Otherwise, I have my camera with me.
I agree with Rich, I didn't buy the camera to leave it at home.
Although after reading this post, I think I'll have to look in to some insurance, especially before I leave on our trip to Australia.

A Lowepro Orion Trekker lives on my back with all my kit in it, a tripod attached below and pouch on the side holding my FZ2

Part of the reason I asked is that my wife and I are taking a trip to Australia this June! We're doing half the time underwater (I have an olympus 5050 and pt housing for that) and the other half at the top end camping/hiking/paddling. I don't worry about it on a boat where no one can get to it, but taking it with me in more "tourist" oriented towns has always bothered me a bit. Probably read too many 'Don't do this' stories.

I do plan on carrying my camera with me every step of the way on this trip though (as much as it can irk my wife when I stop to take 20 pictures of a lizard).

Thanks for the input....

That great! My wife and I will be there the end of this month! We can't wait!
My advice to you is to try and find some way to carry your camera around in a bag that doesn't look like a camera bag. I'm trying to figure this one out at the moment myself. But if you can find lense cases, and then somethnig for the body that protects it enough, you can carry your gear in a beat up looking back pack or some such. I've been doing this with laptops for years.

I only take my gear to gigs and along to special occasions like family get togethers. I agree with buying a p-n-s for everyday stuff.

Going to Australia huh...well let me offer my personal service...you get me a ticket to go with you and I will personnally keep all your photography items safe from peering eyes. I too own the 5050 and know of its potential so I may even be able to offer assistanct there...just wanted to help. just kidding of course. Enjoy the trip and remember to share the pics when you get back.

I take mine everywhere, to the office, to business meetings, to conferences, you name it my camera has been. I carry the full rig all the time too, 10D, 16-35, 100-400, 100 macro, 550ex + STE-2remote, various filters, cable rel. In the car I carry 2 tripods all the time, one for the camera and one for remote flash.

I use it for capturing white boards in the office too.

I haven't had a day without it for more than 2 maybe 3 years. I've only once felt threatened, but nothing came of it.

Take the lot is my advice.

I use the Orion AW. The bottom for my camera the top for my 'purse.' Never leave home without it when going more than 20 minutes away.

Looking for camera insurance. I did a quick google but there all in the UK I looking for something in the US. I called my insurance agent for the hotel and left him a message but I dont think its going to be good to do it with him as its hotel insurance they might jack up my premiums my 2 grand for a camera. I also called my car insurance agent and left him a message. I might be able to tag it to that.

If there is anyone out there that can help outsource or has any info on this I would appreciate it very much. I almost at 2000.00 dollars in equipment so I dont know what that would run but need help!!

Do you have house/renters insurance? That's usually the policy that would cover it. There are lots of insurance companies in the states so you'd probably want to shop around or go through an insurance broker who will do the comparison shopping for you.

Unless you are akin to remorse, better to have it and not need it, than kick yourself in the butt later for wishing you had it.

My basic setup is with me everywhere I go - still waiting for an Elvis or UFO sighting, so I can sell out to the Nat'l Enquirer and retire.

That is exactly why I bought a VERY ordinary looking $10 backpack, some foam, a piece of vinyl and elastic.

I carry my camera with me almost everywhere (except on days where I know I won't be able to take pictures); to work and when I am with my 2-year old. I never know when a Kodak moment will appear. And, I love to go out and take pictures during lunch on a beautiful day. You can tell by my portfolio I am not a professional. But I am always willing to learn new things when it comes to photography.

the funny thing is i have brought it to all our various family functions and not taken a darn shot...thats not true there was a very interesting vegtable platter once

Always. I ride a Harley and have taken my Olympus E20 and 300D cross country.
The Olympus had about 7,000 bike miles and the 300D is getting close to that. This summer we are taking a very long trip and I'm sure it will double the total.
If I'm in the car my camera goes with me. I have it along like having my purse. I have both home owners, and car insurance so I take the chance. I do have a traveling case for use on the bike but in the car it's my camera bag tucked away out of site. I just hope if they take it my best ribbon winning shot isn't on that CF card!!! :)

Mine is with me 85% of the time. Sometimes the wife looks at me funny, but then I tell her she's wearing flip-flops in the snow, and she shuts up.

I only carry mine on days when the inconvenience of knowing where it is at all times outweighs the "dammit, I wish I'd have gotten that picture" concerns. Especially since I now have the easy to carry Velocity 7.

I'll often also carry the 2MP Exlim point and shoot from Casio around if I'm in tight quarters, it sucks for quality, but to be in a crowded bar to snapshot your buddy's 9th shot of tequila, it's perfect.
