Ok, I need a musical expert to put my feeble mind at ease. This has been driving me nuts for several months, and I just know someone here can figure out the answer to this perplexing problem.

You know the song "Let Me Love You" by Mario? Well, there's a little melody in the background that repeats itself quite a few times throughout the song, and it comes from an older song, likely from the 80s.

I've been Googling this baby to death, and I can't find an answer anywhere, although I have found several other people asking the same question. So what the heck is it?

I uploaded this little snippet to demonstrate what I'm talking about:

Annoying Little Snippet

I have a nice, shiny quarter here for anyone who can identify the original song! :)

Not enough in your snippet for me to identify anything, but I can relate to your frustration. I've had a few musical mysteries keep me going for months (and years!) before. Hope you solve it. I'll grab the song off iTunes tomorrow and see if I can help.

Tina Turner's What's Love Got to Do With It?

Gregory Abbott's "Shake You Down" has a very similar background, but I'm not sure if it's the one you're thinking of. When I listened to your snippet that was the song that popped into my mind. Good luck!

Yup, that's it.

Phil Collins, but I'm drawing a blank on the title. I can hear the song in my head, but do you think I can put the words to it? :)

I also thought Tina Turner

what MK and Heather said.

Dang... I thought we had a winner with the Tina Turner idea... but I just listened to it, and it ain't it! :(

There are some vaguely similar sounding parts in What's Love Got to Do With It, but they're done with a flute, and not quite the same melody. In the Annoying Snippet, I'm referring to the "wowww wowwwwww wowwwww" sound you hear prominently. That's what comes from another song.

I also took another listen to Gregory Abbott, but this isn't it either, I'm afraid.

I had it in my mind it was some sort of Lionel Ritchie thing, but I couldn't locate anything that fit the bill there, either.

I think we should make this THE top priority at DPC until the mystery is solved! (Ok, maybe I'm being a little dramatic)

I have a feeling it's a popular, but one-hit wonder 80s song, considering the difficulty of pinning it down...

I'm pretty sure that's "Birds of Fire" by Mahavishnu Orchestra...or maybe an old Syd Barrett tune...who can tell?

I've never even heard of either of those...! I'm sure it's something that I've heard over & over again...

You said you needed musical geniuses...those are two!

Syd is from early Pink Floyd...you know, the good stuff...

I thought this question might be relevant to my music major... guess not :-/

Heh... well, I was a radio DJ for 11 years, and that's what makes this all the more frustrating... I should just recognize this kind of thing. I'm convinced that it's a sappy 80s love song. I'm going to have to just dig out every song ever made in the 80s and listen to them back-to-back to put this issue to rest!

I'd give it a shot but that clip is too short. I'll get it with one or two more measures.

My mind works wonders when it comes to meaningless data.

Here are a few more seconds:

Few More Seconds

I purposely only included a very short clip because the ONLY part in question is the little background sound (it appears twice in this new clip... once at the beginning, and once at the end).

I'm not talking about the beat of the song, the way he's humming, or anything like that. JUST the little thing that sounds kinda like a trumpet -- I don't even know what instrument that is -- that plays a little 5-note riff throughout the song.

You guys are talking Greek to me. I am gonna file under the ADA to stop this nonsense, it's discriminatory... jejeje™

For some reason "Foreigner" comes to mind. I don't have access to any Foreigner tunes. Any possibility it comes from "I Wanna Know What Love Is?" (This is just a guess.)

Ironically, I just listened to that one (and others) on some old tapes... not it! :)

i'm as far from musical genius as you can get, but something in me says Lionel Richie's "All Night Long."

it's not in the snippet on iTunes and i don't have a full copy of the song anywhere to check it. feels like it would fit in there, though.... or somewhere in the lionel richie ouevre, anyway.

I definitely thought it was Lionel Richie, too... that was my first thought that stuck with me for quite a while! I found a web site that had portions of just about every one of his songs, and I went through every single one of them without finding it, though.

Is it rather pathetic that this is the most pressing issue in my life at the moment?

what's more pathetic is that it's driving me nuts and i know absolutely nothing about music. (i got mocked at work the other day because i didn't know some REM song.) i do know just about every bit of useless tv trivia imaginable, though. why couldn't this be a tv theme song?

come to think of it, it's pretty reminiscent of the "la law" theme.... lol

Nope -- it means that you don't have things going on like: someone you love in the hospital, a car accident to deal with, work isn't stressing you out and your relationships are in good order. All's well.

Or you're just ignoring all those things.
