After the first week that I was here I learned not to bring attention to my photo during the voting just cause of a comment made. I know there is usually one thread each week about "TROLLS" I figure it is Monday morning and I would start the thread for the week.

I have never seen anyone actually sharing the comment that was unjust or just down right rude, that is until now. The comment I receive just proves that this person does not vote on the worth of the photo, this is the exact comment I received...

"Yeah, enough with the US flags. I already mentioned this elsewhere, but I'm tired already of seeing them. These shots will be getting 1's from me in future weeks..."

This just proves that the person who left the comment does not vote on the photo for merit and is extremely close minded. I admit the photo that this comment was made about has a flaw that can easily be fixed with spot editing but as we all know that is not allowed. But the photo itself is good and fits the title well. This kind of comment has absolutely no merit and should not have been made. In a thread last week I jokingly stated starting a troll of the week award, this person is getting my vote for the award. =o)

Now don't you think that we should be able to remove comments like this and also have this persons vote removed from our scores it is obvious he didn't vote on the worth of the photo but merely his anti American sentiments which should have been kept to himself!

When a photographer takes a picture of a controversial subject (believe it or not, the American flag is controversial) they are opening themselves up to these kinds of criticisms. There are many in the world that are disgusted with Americans and seeing a picture of an American flag makes an attractive target for their anger. Is it right? Probably not. Is it something a photographer should be aware of? Definitely.

I wouldn't take too much offense to it.... just accept it and move on.

Are we not suppose to vote on a photo's merit? Have I been doing it wrong? Should I vote ones to all the reptile photos that appear here cause I don't like reptiles? I hope not cause I actually loved a photo last week of a reptile it was a great shot but ewww it was still a reptile. But tell me now am I doing this wrong? Shouldn't I vote on the photo based on does it meet the challenge? Is it in focus? Are there any flaws in the photo? Or should I be close minded and vote only on the subjects appeal?

Did you read what I wrote?

"Is it right? Probably not. Is it something a photographer should be aware of? Definitely."

I'm sorry, but technical excellence is just one part of a photograph. I could take an excellent photograph of a wall, but it wouldn't get high votes. Choice of subject makes a large difference in how a photograph is recieved. Plain and simple. Some people can look beyond that, many can not.

I never said it was right. I just said that as a photographer you have to be aware of it.

The problem lies with the viewer, not the photographer.

If someone can not control their feelings long enough to vote decently on a photo, then they need not to be here. Or not vote on the photo at all. Thats what I do, if an image strikes me the wrong way I will just move on to the next one. Which has only happened one time.

It does none of us any good to disrespect and insult another photographer based on their submission.

Its just like a TV show...if ya dont like it... change the channel.....

Yes I read what you wrote and I guess I might as well start being close minded, excuse me while I go revote on the Candy and Weather Challenges I just didn't like some of those candies and the sunsets are are not exactly weather...

Oh before I go revote look at the orginal comment that was made now is it right to give every US Flag photo a 1? Excuse me, that is voting on simply the subject and not even looking at the technical merit at all!

To a certain degree, Im with the original commenter, although just voting 1 on any flag is a bit silly.

As a Brit, I really dont get this fascination the US has with its flag, and the endless repititions of the same image are about as interesting as photos of the living room curtains. Hence I will often score a flag pic quite low unless its a really good pic.

There have been a couple of images where the flag actually says something about the subject and not the photographer, of which Flag by Connie is the most notable.

BTW, when you see loads of Union Jacks hung up to dry, its more likely than not that its been arranged either by or for American consumption.

I don't agree with this person's voting strategy/criteria, but I'll defend their right to have it. Whether we "like" a photo or subject is a part of what we can use to evaluate an image. So is technical merit, composition, etc. How much weight we give to each component is (and must be) up to each of us.

Some people will still score highly a technically excellent photo they don't "like;" others won't. It's your choice...

I'd actually be glad to get such an explanatory note, since it explains the precise reason for the vote...

That photo just does not say weather to me.. It says American Flag.

i don't agree with the person who's had it up to here with the flags, but i can see where he's coming from. the poster's opinion is a valid one, and you shoudn't be too upset by it.
i don't even think they were "anti-american"; from the comment you posted, it sounds like they'd just had too much of the flags. which i can understand. it's possible to get a nice picture of a flag, it's also real easy to have it be a "cheap shot", something that tugs at the heart strings without really flexing the photographer's talent, or showing the viewer something new or different.
overusing a symbol is tacky, kitsch. it can happen with anything, take cute kids or cute pets for example. one cute kid is adorable. one kitten is sweet. once everybody starts shooting pets and children every week, no matter what the challenge is, then we're in trouble.
we've had a flag every challenge for about the past year. can you honestly not see where the poster might be coming from?
i don't think the poster was a troll. i don't think they're "anti-american" either, i read nothing in his comment that would suggest that. i think giving flags a 1 sounds like a decent way to judge photos on their merits: he thinks it's too easy a picture to take, doesn't show enough effort, creativity. that's his opinion, so be it.
easy to get thin-skinned about our pictures, especially if we're photographing something we love.
but to answer your question,
"Now don't you think that we should be able to remove comments like this and also have this persons vote removed from our scores..."
NO. you don't have to agree with everybody here. but by posting a picture, you've agreed to let yourself be judged. by all comers. period. honest and ugly is more precious than censored and sweet.
"...it is obvious he didn't vote on the worth of the photo but merely his anti American sentiments which should have been kept to himself!"
your reaction to the commenter hilarious, given that your picture's about a symbol of freedom. this is the kind of thing they tell folks in china, who don't like wall-sized murals of chairman mao.
when you hear someone you disagree with, what you're listening to is freedom.
have a great day.

I think Johnny nailed it pretty well.. I agree a bit with the "cheap shot" theory as well. Seems a lot of people are trying hard to work flags into the photo no matter what the challenge is..

You know, since the beginning of these forums, people have been complaining that people who vote a 1 should leave a comment. I mean, endless complaints about this...they have to justify their vote, they ought to at least have the balls to leave a comment, etc. So someone leaves the much desired comment and you put them up for public ridicule? I think that's pretty lame.

Rant Alert I appologize in advance, but there are too may threads like this.

How can you (not you in particular) ask to have Comments Mandatory on all 1's and 10's then publicly roast the commenter because you don't like his opinion? This is precisely why people don’t comment on pictures they don’t like, for whatever reason.

Then you can tell people “Oh you can vote anywhere between 1 and 10, but if you give me less than 5, I’m going to ostracize you, so people think you’re an Ass.” Why don’t we just give out all 5’s then everyone is happy, right. If you keep this ‘Troll of the Week” thing going, expect the number of comments to go way down.

How can I give out a 10 and not be expected to give out a 1? OK, now I’m ranting about a whole bunch of threads together, but what do you guys expect? If you don’t want any 1’s ask the DPC to make the votes out of 2 -10.

Now I’m not saying that I agree OR disagree with the commenter, but if you appeal to the masses for their opinion, don’t be surprised by some of their responses. Even if it’s a 1.

PS
Now I know I've only been here a few weeks, but if you were a long time member and you saw a picture of a (off the top of my head) Squirrel, entered every week for 50 weeks, would you be a little upset? Even if they are from different people, but you wouldn't know.

God knows I not fond of seeing the same sh-tuff at work every week. ;o)

For starters my photo of the flag shows a clear blue sky and the flag is blowing in the breeze so the photo definately shows the windy condition hench WEATHER...CLEAR AND BREEZY. The photo is in sharp focus the sun is actually reflecting in the flag and the photo over all is a good composition unfortunately it is those of you who are tired of the all the flags who don't take time to take these things into consideration. Hope none of you are tired of flowers and dogs and cats cause you will see a lot of them next week. I can hardly wait =o)

Now to say that you are going to start giving every photo of a flag a 1 is unjust. That is saying you don't care how good or bad the photo is you are going to give any flag photo a 1. That is like me saying I detest snakes so from now on I am going to give them a 1. WRONG a photo should be judged on more than just liking the subject or not.

I just don't understand why people get so upset when there are a lot of photos of one subject. Why? I can't see that other photos are as good. They are actually boring. Like the Pi challenge. I think the sunsets, flower, pets and children shots are the best out there. Who started this cliche' thing anyway.

I don't think an angry person should be voting anyway. Take a break and come back you trolls and cliche' haters. Would you like us to vote your different shots down?

Is it just me or do we end up in the troll thread every week?

To say they didn't like it was one thing and that wasn't what upset me it is the fact someone like that who can say from now on every flag photo is getting a 1 is very close minded and shouldn't be voting until they lose the attitude!

That's not very nice! Aren't we voting on the weather challenge this week? I thought it was against the rules to refer to specific photos during the voting week, never mind exactly describing it right down to the title!

I don't care about this challenge anymore what I do care about is there should be some kind of an end put to the TROLLS. If you vote a photo down cause you don't like a flag then you need to open up your mind a bit before voting.

My comment about my flag photo was because joebar couldn't understand how a flag was related to weather...so I answered that question along with another one sorry if you don't like that I did that...hey ask to disqualify my photo if you want.

I want the comment and that persons vote no matter what it was taken from my score cause they sure aren't voting with an open mind!
04/14/2003 01:05:33 PM · #23
I hear what you are all saying, its geting quite cosy sitting on this fence.

Maybe the troll who made the comment about seeing too many flags, just needs to learn diplomacy.

OK give a one, but be polite in the comment....dont add insult to injury. You can say something negative without being harsh.
04/14/2003 01:18:43 PM · #24
Wait a sec. DPC etiquette forbids discussion of entries in the current challenges. It is considered bad form to begin whining before the voting has been done. I think there is a real danger that it will influence the votes (probably negatively). Since I have encountered three American flags in the wind so far I think you are doing much more unjustice to the other two than the single 1 vote has done to you.
04/14/2003 01:21:29 PM · #25
There is one flag that's really whipping in the wind -- that sorta says weather (if you combine the photo with the challenge and title). But it mostly just says flag. And it's just an average snapshot. The better flag photo barely shows weather.

Now quit your bitchin -- everyone gets crappy scores from time to time. For that unjustified 1 you got from the "troll", I'm sure you'll get a few unjustified 10s from biased USA lovers, people with family in the military, etc..
