I have a challenge suggestion that has been floating around my head for a while. Now that this weeks challenge is more than likely to bring about some drab entries, I think it's about time that I have my voice be heard. And at the same time everyone else let your voice be heard, or rather seen in pictures. My idea for a challenge is Political Views: Take a picture that voices your opinion. I think it would be fun to see all the wide varietys of peoples political views from the far left to the far right, and everwhere inbetween.

ANd your other hobby is beekeeping? You like to stick your hand in a hornets nest? Yikes!

Top idea. Don't quite see it happening though.

I just get an image of having to makr hundreds of shots of the US flag with titles about the war... it's a good idea, but not right now, at this delicate time in international politics. It could really cause some grudges, too...

I guess this "political" challenge has the potential of turning into an impromptu popularity poll for good ole "Dubya". I mean every challenge now has an American flag, no matter how obscure; I don't think we need to have a political challenge, we're doing it already. By the way, I intend no disrespect to Americans or your flag; as a people you are like all other nationalities - basically good. I can't say the same for your Commander and Chief or his administration. This is a great site, we don't need to bias the DPC voting process with political views.

Might I point out you are British and your country was right there beside us fighting so lighten up!

Again I got to ask did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?

political views do not have to be just about war or flags or political leaders. Imagine all the bra burning pictures, gay right pictures, struggling economies, kkk, racism, facism, capitlism, feminism, fammon, industrialization, polution, anarchy, prostitution, public safety, biohazards, love for ones government, hate for ones government, tree hugger, gangs, zoning issues pictures we could get etc... as you can see the list goes on. There is always something going on in the world that everyone can either agree with or disagree with. Its a shame that because of the war some of you may think that the only politics people think about is the war. There are other issues at hand, other issues that because of the war are being held below the surface of the attention of political leaders. We should open grudges with open arms and exceptense of our differences. With grudges change is brought about, and hopeably those grudges won't bring about a war. I would like to think that we are not all war mongers quicker to bear arms than to talk about our differences. So sure, maybe it would be easy to go out and get that tattered waving american flag infront of your house put it infront of the CNN and take a shot, but shots like that won't win. Maybe you have a porno store in your neighborhood that you dissaprove of because you daughter has to walk buy it on her way to school, you could take a photograph depicting that situation. Or maybe you are fed up with the crime rate in your neighborhood, or the drug use, graffiti or vandalism. Or maybe you think equal rights is wrong and that we should have never abolished slavery<- thats not me but I just wanted to say from the far left to the far right should be able to participate no matter how wack their views may appear to us. As you can see the list for this topic goes on and on. With that inmind I'd like to finish off by saying, please don't let this challenge idea get shot down just because some people are thinking that this will become war related.

I think the gist of most posts are "Good Idea, Poor Timing".
04/14/2003 01:15:51 PM · #9
There is no such thing as bad timing only the closed minds that can't look past there own limitations.

I like the idea a lot!

I really believe that this did not get the attention that it deserves. Come on people, tell me what you think.

I'll start off by saying I think it's a good idea. It would surely produce many great entries, and it would push for a lot of unique subject material that wouldn't show up in other challenges.

However, your point that this weeks challenges are likely to produce many drab images will probably be as much, if not more of a problem for a challenge based on politics.
Perhaps one way to encourage variety would be to make the challenge "politics without flags" and in description say something to the effect of "Create a photograph the illustrates a political issue or demonstrates a political viewpoint without using a flag as the central element of your photo."
I would definately support a challenge like that.

(Completely unrelated sidenote: It might have been a good idea to title this thread something else, since my first impression was that it would be another ranting/whining thread about flowers and pet dogs.)

Ditto what Mr. Wingy said. Could not agree more nor said it better..

I don't think this is such a great idea because ppl are just too sensitive about such things. Just look at the comments on my George picture in the sins challenge.

I suppose it would be an ok idea. I live in Washington DC and I can take pictures of protestors or politicians any day of the week. Bring it on!

I think it's a good idea to skip politics and religion. Let's stick to photography

If we are taking photographs based on topics, which we are, why limit the topics by saying some are 'taboo'. Having a Political View Challenge would be interesting. Anyone who feels they have to get offended at someone else view instead of enjoying the photography can just be quiet and sit back until they have a chance to take another picture of a kitten in a Marguerita glass or some such inane thing. Photographs mean something, if even to one person, every photo means something. There have been plenty of political views portrayed within the previous challenges.

And to those saying 'bad timing', why? When would good timing be? These are tumultuous, political times. Photographers in Iraq are making their careers based on the shots they are taking right now and people feel we can't submit a political photo to a little online challenge?

Let's grow up, take pictures, and enjoy the photography, no matter what the subject. If you don't have a political view, keep the camera in its bag for a week.

I would be fascinated to see how someone depicts being apolitical!

A related topic would be "Built at Taxpayer Expense" where we'd have the chance to shoot all kinds of public works (or don't-works...)

Even though there's no way in hell I can DO a politics challenge out here in the boonies, I'm all for it.

Indi - you got a lot of 1s - mostly from NON camera users. Some people hate him - some love him. It flies both ways.

"I don't go to recitals anymore
Because my hearing is too sensitive
And I don't go to art galleries anymore
Because there are people there
And I can't deal with people
Because they don't understand me."

It's just a picture (I say this spending the equivalent of TWO full time jobs studying it and learning).

Mavrik - Of course you can. It doesn't have to be Pres. Bush and the American flag... politics comes down to almost everything, from the protection of natural resources and state parks, abortion clinics (don't start yelling, everyone), Federal Buildings, homeless problems, border patrol, illegal drugs or firearms, the economy (companies and stores closing) and isn't Albany the capitol of New York? There is definitely some politics in practice in that city and ways to capture it in a photograph.

I feel the challenge could be about 'a' political view, not necessarily encompassing your entire party (or there would be a lot of pics of donkeys and elephants).

I think it could be a fun challenge, and would definitely be interesting to watch the Rant forum for a few days after that one...

Another option might be 'Politics without Patriotism' or 'Politics without Nationalism.' There's plenty of overarching 'issues' that don't relate to Rah Rah Rah, Go, My Country!
05/12/2003 11:14:57 AM · #21
We could have a "Discover Freedom" challenge. Or possibly a "Rant" challenge!
