I'll be the first to kick off the inevitable debate over the current Late Night challenge...

How late is late? Is it when it gets dark? Is it past my bedtime? Is it when David Letterman comes on?

:)

Late for me is noon. I'm at work right now and to me noon is my midnight. As for late night, what would the people that live in Alaska do if this challenge was during the height of summer when the sun never sets? <g>

to me late night would mean that the sun wouldn't be showing, it would be dark and the street lights would be on.

On a seperate note noon is not late night no matter what shift you work.

LOL, Yeah, I realized that afterwards. Oops. Guess I should take a nap. Wait, did I just say I was going to sleep while at work? Since I work at a hotel I guess I have the pick of rooms. Zzzzzzzzz

Late night: the darkest hours with the only the company of a lonely moon, the scurrying rat, the owl in flight, and the dark silhouette of a trio of bats.

Sounds very haikuesque.

doesn't have to be a silhouette.

Good this challenge was not two or three weeks later or so since then I wouldn't have any real night at all here in the north!

Exactly my thoughts! Seems to me that sunset now is between 21:00 and 22:00 but an hour later the sun is just 4 degrees lower than the horizon in Reykjavík so it is hardly dark. But it is possible right now.

By dictionary standards:
The period between sunset and sunrise, especially the hours of darkness.

Well, I fear my head may explode for typing this. It's confusing enough to me to figure out what night is, but I also have to figure out what "OUTSIDE" is!?!?

What do they mean by Outside?

Could it be referring to the much haloed BOX?

:-P

lol, no it means outdoors. see above.

OK, for the Late Night challenge, it says: "Take a photograph outside late at night."

This really is a challenge for the SPCP (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Photographs). Don't leave your photos inside and alone, they have to go for walks and relieve themselves, not just in the daytime, but at night as well. I really want to thank D&L for their concern for our ignored photographs. So go on, pick one up in your hands, take it down off the wall, get a leash for it, and yes, take it outside late at night.

So in other words, in order to meet the challenge, I need to see a picture of you taking a photograph (bonus points for it being in a frame), out of your house/apartment during the darkness hours.

I'm sure I know what this challenge is about. We're supposed to get a photo of David Letterman, but not while he's on TV.

If the box is haloed, it's oversharpened ;-)

So, we're to take a picture of ourselves taking a picture outside late -- as opposed to on time -- at night?

I customarily take my pictures outside early in the morning, but well after sunrise.

So does late at night mean beyond dusk - as in if your sky is not inky black you're going to be penalized? night shots look best just after sunset while there is still some light in the sky.

So we get less than optimum shots or less than optimum scores?

My experience with night images in DPC is quite the opposite. We shoot a night image either to bring out the charm of the night or the charm of the lights and reflections. DPC crowd prefers images that negate the dark of night. They want them more at sunset and if you want to show reflections make sure the sky is legible. That is how thry like them.

While the above is one style, that is, the well lit night image, it is not the only style but my gut feeling is that images representing the true values of the night is not highly received. They prefer only dazzle.
