It seems a lot of people understood this challenge as macro instead of advertisment.

And of course (as alway here) most people do not take into consideration what so ever how an image makes them feel only, weather it's sharp and neither too dark nor too light (forgetting the high key and low key concepts).

Just my two cents :)

Dimitri,

however, having a photo of something else with the jewelry object taking a very small portion of the total image to the effect of
- not being able to immediately spot it (waldo syndrome), or
- not being able to analyze it enough to ascertain if I like the product or not
- both
is not a good advertisement. Now, such images could be accompanied with a macro in a real-world brochure, showing to the potential buyer what the product is all about. I think that this challenge is about the second type of the image, not the first one. And I am scoring the photos that way (and I am commenting on every such instance explaining why I gave the photog what I gave them).
And no, after going through 50+ photos, my lowest score is 4 and highest is 10. Probably will stay that way- unless Mr. Hanky shows up with a ring:-)

I agree about the Waldo syndrom as well, however the scores I gave are not queit in the same range as you did; it's mostly 1 - 5, with a few 6 - 9, no 10s this time.
(Just a small note, I ocasionally am actually paid for shooting jewelry; at a 4 digit daily rate; hence I do consider myself to have a bit of knowledge on the matter).

It seems most people did not really took a bit of time to flip through a magazine or two (and I don't mean a catalog) to see what a jewelry ad looks like.

Don't mean to oftened anyone, just my personal thoughts.

I'll stick to landscapes from now on and the leave the advertising world to the professionals.

No score for me - I missed the challenge.

Shame, 'cause I went to a jewellers - spoke to the girl at the desk and asked if she'd mind if I shot her with a pearl necklace.

Forgot to take the photos though.

If it makes you feel any better, your comment on mine was right in line with the other 3 comments received so far.

I'm in trouble with voters because I spell things the way I was taught... proper English. ;)

Oh well. Hopefully people will consider alternative spellings when scoring in the future, especially since text is NOT what is supposed to be graded here.

Edit: to add that people sure are commenting a LOT on this challenge so far. Everyone trying to get their comment numbers up? :)

Dimitrii-I posted a few days back asking about blownout highlights because I did go through a catalouge and looked at around 10 internet sites to get some ideas and saw a crazy amount of...yep...blownout highlights.

I've already recieved two comments noting that I have them but it seems to be reasonably acceptable everywhere I'd looked, though I did see some super highend work that was lit subtley and Photoshoped-up.

My shot sold to the guy who made the piece and he wants me to take a few more for point-of-sales displays, so I'm happy with that.

There's a nice upward trend. I hope to be in the mid 5's by noon.

Hmmm

I spent much time on a shot that I was really pleased with, but which is scoring badly (4.7). Any thoughts on whether text or no text makes much difference to the scorers? Mine is absent text, but to which text could be added. I didn't think that adding, say, the name of a jewellery store, would be "augmenting" my photography (though it would have made it more like an advert).
04/25/2005 04:42:50 AM · #24
I was wondering the same thing Matthew. I did not add text to my submission either and it is falling like a rock. Started out at 6 and now I am at 5.2708!! I really tried to enter something different, but it seems its not being recieved well. I wondered if maybe text would have made a difference.
04/25/2005 04:51:26 AM · #25
I think if the image looked like it intentionally left space for text, it should've been there, since this was supposed to be an ad. I took into account the title as ad copy though, too.
