Martin - 9/15/2002
Good title, however it is misleading because they are infact very washed out, very blurred and very uninteresting. 1-Martin

Well I was going to e-mail you but no address so I will make it public to contact you.

There is no such word as infact? Yes the pears are uninteresting but they are not washed out or blurred. One has a burnt spot on the top of it. The difference between the pears is one is riper. That must be you. Thanks for the comment for you are really trying to be a pain in the ass.

Bob,

For future reference if you click on the word "undisclosed" it will let you send a private message to the user without knowing their email address.

This is not very apparent and we could probably improve the interface for this.

I licked my screen but it just gave me static on my tongue and now my monitor looks wet. What did I do wrong?

Why would this person make such a comment? If I got that after putting my fruit on the line I would say 'watta dink!' I like pears Mr. Gaither but I'm not as picky as ol' Martie! Keep on truckin' lol!

This is the reason people who leave low scores do not put the names forward with their score, bob, don't take things so seriously, I thought your picture was very very dull, unimaginative and all the rest but lots more people thought my own submission was crap but thats the beauty of us humans, we all like different things, don't waste time emailing people who didn't like your picture, concentrate on the ones who did like it, you'd be a happier chap.

Hey Martin! You're what we Americans call a real hoot! Your assignment is to write a 5,000 word essay on 'What a Score of 1 Means', and it is due tomorrow morning at this time in this forum. Your composition should concentrate on what a score of 1 means to you, and your conception of what a 1 should mean to a recipient. Please use the first person narrative voice. A good essay will communicate through examples, with references to your own work (if you have ever received a 1), and the work of others available in the site (other than Bob's pears, if possible). Lateness will result in a lower grade and no submission will result in an F. Also, use of the term 'very' in your essay will result in a lower grade - you have used up your alotment. Please reply with any questions - I am looking forward to your work and the effect the assignment hopefully will have!

It's hard for a person to not take it personally when you pretty much tell them their work is crap. I could go on and on about this subject but I know I'm wasting my time. Rudeness seems to rule around here.

Welcome to Art 101. Lesson 1 - One man's crap is another man's dinner. Here ends the lesson.

If you take it personally when someone doesn't like your work, maybe phtography and art in general are bad place to focus efforts :)

Easy for you to say John. Some of us only break the top 100 only occasionally. Yes, I take it personally. It is my creativity and I have not had the benefit of a class like many others around here. A person can only take so much.

Maybe I will quit posting here.

I get my share of one votes...

09/16/2002 12:25:15 PM · #13
A lot of people here in the past have suggested that people who vote 1 and 2 scores should be forced to comment... here is an example of what happens when someone publically claims a vote of 1.

This voter left his feeling about why he did not like the photo. I don't find Martin's comments offensive or rude in any way.

How many of YOU leave comments to go along with your 1 votes and SIGN them?

... didn't think so...

Yeah but look how many times you win. My point is that I don't want a "there there" from an expert and I'm sure Bob Gaither and Tom n Texas don't either. Just let me be mad. I'm tired of being told I'm not good enough.

How many times I, or anyone else for that matter, WIN, has nothing to do with this thread...

Mr. Setzler - you know better than to say that - for all of the time spent in this place on the issues of A) Whether a shot fits the topic or not; and B) Whether a shot has merit independent of the topic, you know that a 1 score should be reserved pretty much for a photo that lacks any connection to the category AND has little to no independent value as a photo. Bob's pears fit the category AND the photo had independent merit in terms of framing, color, etc. So pulllllleeeeeze give me a break with the 'how many leave a 1 and sign it' crap - as if that gesture redeems an inappropriate comment and/or arithmetically damaging vote? Judging from your photography you should know better than that. Signed, sgtpepper6344

It may have something to do with your opinion.

I think we can all agree that getting a 1 is frustrating. Yes Martin had the courage to leave comments, and his name. But few of us ever feel we deserve a "very bad".

Jim Seltzer has a few nice photos but I would not call him an expert. The real experts are 'out there' with their books and publications. This is not a putdown just an observation.;-)

Sgt, I don't disagree with what you say here at all. I scored the photo much higher also...

What I'm saying here is that MARTIN had the guts to sign his comment. whether or not I agree with his scores is totally opinion.

There are NO guidelines on this site to define what photos should recieve a 1 and what photos should receive a 10. If there are, please show me because I can't find them. The method of scoring is completely up to the individual, and I doubt seriously that many people use the exact same methods of scoring...

I don't give 1 votes... I don't give 2 votes... I give very few 3 votes... That's my method.

I agree with your comments on the photo in question. In OUR eyes, it deserves much more than a 1 vote. My entire point here is that it's not my place to tell someone else how to formulate their votes. I NEVER believe that my own photos should receive a 1, and yet they do practically every week. I would love to receive comments like Martin left when i do receive a 1 vote. That way, I know why that voter gave me a 1....

What we are doing here is discouraging people like Martin to come forward with their opinions on photos that they dislike... I would rather get the comment than not... how about you?

09/16/2002 01:04:28 PM · #20
I don't know... I just see all those 1s as being an internet thing. Wherever you have a button to push, there will be people pushing it. Like this one.

I think I have a different voting strat here than most other people.
I give 1's to photos that include all of these bullet points:

- No thought put into thinking up an interesting idea
- No thought put into the setup of the shot
- Photos that do nothing for me (they are dull, boring, bad quality, or even digusting)

These criteria are normally linked.

So I do give out my fair share of 1's, but as you say john, everyone has their own way of voting.

09/16/2002 01:20:32 PM · #22
TY - I would rather get a comment of course - and I feel it more important to get a comment from someone giving a score that is 'strong', viz., on either end of the meter. But that doesn't always happen - more rare the vote and the name enabling communication. 'nuff said - this tension is a by-product of the anonymity feature. Hopefully Martin has been following the rant bearing his name! lol!

I guess I should say, I really do not agree with this method of confrontation.

I did do something like this to John once, but is was meant in fun, and I did not put his name up. I really do not think these forums should be used for taking another person to task.

It sucks to get 1's. Most photos do not fall into the "very bad" catagory to most people, but we all get them, in fact, I got 11, and I was rather upset by that and had my own little rant about it, and feel much better now.
09/16/2002 02:49:49 PM · #24
Well what can I say? I have received plenty of 1's, I have given out plenty of 1's and will continue to do so if a picture does absolutly nothing for me. To bob I would say sorry that your upset but I really did not like your picture, but I would also say that my opinion is worth next to nothing to you so don't worry. This whole forum only points out how badly some people wish to get a high placement yet surely this is not the be all and end all. I don't care where I come, I have had places in the top 35 and my F/v came in around 170ish but I know that since joining this site I have learnt more about taking pictures then I learnt in 5 years before hand! So to anyone who receives a 1 from me, sorry in advance but I will leave a comment and my name so you know who and why! Everybody chill out, go out, take some snaps.

Martin,
I will support your right to give 1's and comments. I, like others, am here to learn, and I have learned quite a bit in the last few months. If someone gives me a 1,or a 2, I will certainly not lose any sleep over it. I may not like it, though. But I would like to know what, in that person's opinion, I could have done to improve. I will then integrate that comment with the rest.
All the scores are relative to a voter anyway. I know that I have received a few 10's for photos that I would not have given a 10 to. So it probably evened out a 1.
Now to go find a corner to shoot.
