It took a forum like DPC to get me going into the world of stock. I have been travelling around Europe and the Middle-East for the last 2 1/2 years and saw the opportunity to submit my travel shots to 'pay back' the thousands of dollars spent travelling...
Many people before I started showed me the micro RF stock libraries like Istock, etc, but after spending many hours keywording and upsizing, not to mention hours wandering around deserts/smelly cities on my travels, I JUST COULDN'T sell my images at 0.20c, not to mention driving down worldwide stock image prices. I don't want to stir up another hornets nest, thats just my honest opinion. Since Nov, I have now got over 1200+ images on Alamy, and images on MyLoupe/PhotographersDirect/PhotoNewZealand. Sales have been increasing expontentially with the numbers I have online...I'll let you know when I get another sale...my last one was last week for US$136.00

Hi Grant, I'm really interested in stock libraries and I wondered if I could ask you which of those that you submit to are most successful for you? And do you find that it's your travel photography that sells best? Hope you don't mind me asking! Thanks you!

I have mostly travel shots (95%) in my alamy portfolio so it's really only those shots that sell (mostly to editorial buyers, books/magazines/newspapers). Alamy have been the best money earner, currently having 1.53 sales per 1000 images. A good rule of thumb is 1 sale per 1000 images a month, but this is hugely variable. Travel photography doesn't pay as well due to the editorial average purchase being around US$130, but hey...it's what I like doing. Whats better than having a holiday, submitting those shots and then paying back the holiday with stock sales??? With your 20-D you will have no problems getting into alamy. I would recommend them way ahead of these RF micro sites.

Yes I am interested in travel photography as well and don't want to sell to the micro sites, I guess I'm just wondering if travel photography does make any money but it sounds like it is doing for you which is great. Thanks for sharing!

I see you are based in the UK, so that is another reason why Alamy is the best bet for you, SAVES POSTAGE! I have to send the image dvd's from New Zealand...I enjoyed it more when I was just down the road from their office in Oxfordshire...

I wasn't meaning to sound worked up, sorry.

My point was just to say that it is fine to use Imatch when keywording for Alamy. If you check out the Yahoo group for alamy, Imatch comes very highly recommended by many users.

edit for spelling

And a good point it was too. Until you really start getting into Stock photography, you don't realise what sort of workflow is needed to get the images from the camera, to the agencies. Imatch not only helps keyword many times faster, it also orgainises my entire stock portfolio for easy searches when I directly sell images to clients.

Well guys.... I think my microstock time is coming to an end. Time to move up! I finally had the time to get some images ready for Alamy. I'llbe dropping them off today! Wish me luck! :-)

Good luck!

I've been watching this thread since it started, getting up the guts and the portfolio. With all the input from everyone, maybe I have a chance.

I`m in :) all 13 images passed QC.
All my test shots were from canon 350d large jpeg fine settings and all had in camera sharpening which i was a little worried about.
Now the hard bit is finding the time to get a good collection submitted.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for your tips and advice.

Ok, doesn't take too long to inspire me. I'm going to give it a shot too. Heading off today to put a CD in the mail...

Thanks for the inspiration and great info...

I just sent in my Test Images yesterday. Now just waiting...
I was a little concerned about the noise when I upsized them, so I used NeatImage to a conservative degree on most of them to reduce the noise. Any others here use noise reduction software on their images they send in? They don't say anything against it in their "Submission Guidelines", only against sharpening, which I didn't do at all.

I would lay off the NeatImage as much as possible. If you are shooting in Raw you should not be having that much of a problem with noise after resizing. Go back over your settings and the steps you are taking and find out why you are getting noise.

Alamy is considering going FTP.
09/02/2005 10:10:12 PM · #318
They have been testing FTP for some time now, I have asked to be accepted into the few who are currently uploading by FTP. Their response was a polite, NO. They are only currently letting certain members (basically larger contributers) during the testing stage.

Best to get it sorted before letting loose 4900+ contributers into their servers... :-)

Hello,

I've just joined this site, mainly because I saw the intriguing thread on submitting to Alamy. I sent off my first QC disc yesterday after doing quite a bit of reading, both on the Alamy site and in discussion forums (when I could find threads like this one which weren't polarised into slagging off Alamy or the microstocks!)

I already have an image library of c.200,000 images but it's very specialised (historic architecture - mostly English parish churches - and those type of photos don't have much of a market unfortunately) so I spent an afternoon shooting some other things. I then chose the best of my afternoon shots plus some from my archive and put together 10 images. I resized using PS bicubic as I really don't see much advantage in using GF - especially as I don't have to rez up by a huge amount. No noise reduction applied to my images (I'm hoping the slight noise in the 1Ds images won't count as rejection criteria!) CD went in the mail yesterday.

Fingers crossed.

BTW, how do you pronounce Alamy?

Uht oh, pronounce it? AL-uh-me? :) That's the US version I think. Someone will probly say al-AHM-ee or a-LAM-ee.

I've heard people pronouce it al-ah-may and al-ah-my. Does it matter?

I'd like to pronounce it correctly. It would be like pronouncing getty, geeeetty. ;o)

Well then, unlike Getty, which is a name familiar to most people even before the formation of Getty Images, most people who encounter Alamy for the first time do so by reading about it. Therefore it would make a world of sense if it was pronounced exactly as it is spelled - Alamy. A-lam-e ...er.. was that El-ah-mi, or Al-ee-ba-ba
09/03/2005 02:51:03 PM · #325
I asked because there are many ways to pronounce it:

al - r - me
al - A - me
al - ame
A - lar - me
al - r - mI
A - lar - mI

plus others no doubt.

I don't ask stupid questions (well, not normally ;-) I wondered if anyone has heard someone from the company pronounce it.
