How does this work?

I've been contributing to Alamy since Nov 2004, and currently have 1242 image online. I basically have been submitting images from my travels throughout Europe and the Middle East. I have only recently brought my 300D, so I have thousands of negatives to scan also from my film SLR...

I use Photoshop CS2, Genuine Fractuals, Imatch (to keyword and import IPTC data) and LZW compression.

HAVE YOU HAD SALES??? Yes. I have had a sale every month for the last 4 months...which is a nice income on top of my full time job...but be patient people... Most buyers take around 3 months from first seeing the image and downloading the small sample image, before they purchase the licienced image. Don't even bother selling stock if you want to make a quick dollar, and don't even bother selling stock if you sell the image for a dollar.

I also contribute to PhotographersDirect.com, MyLoupe.com and PhotoNewZealand.com.

Grant

Hi, how have sales been on photographersdirect.com and myloupe.com?
If you dont mind me asking :)

""... Imatch (to keyword and import IPTC data)

Imatch is a program that categorises images into relevant folders, in which you then use a scripting program to create those category names as keywords imbedded into the IPTC data of a digital file. It means I have my entire portfolio on hand and it's easier to keyword (rather then typing you click the mouse button).

RE; MyLoupe and PDirect....no sales from each as of yet, but PDirect has been incouraging due to a few 'nibbles' lately. I have been putting my efforts into Alamy, so these two have been 'upload when i have time' libraries....

Expensive? Learning curve? I need something like this. It would save me hours.

Imatch is not expensive compared with a 1Ds...around US$80 if I remember correctly...

I couldn't find anything on the site about Mac versions. Is there any comparable software for Macs?

* do you do it one image at a time, or can you do it in batches?
* is there any difference between keywording for alamy than other agencies?

thanks!!

I embed keywords using IPTC info with the imatch software. Works quite well. I would sudjest doing that and NOT keywording once they are online. If the file has the keywords embeded, it not only goes quicker with less confusion, If you upload them to another site, you don't have to do the work over again.

I keyword first in batches... all pictures from bullriding have bull, cowboy, and so on, and then i go and add individual keywords to each image such as turn, brown (bull) or such to match the pictur emore.

Well I got rejected (Twice)
Firstly because I neglected to realize that my 48Mb images were 16bit and therefore dropped below the minimum size when auto-converted by Alamy to JPG.

Secondly, I used Photoshop to up-size my 20D shots and lost quality.

I might try again as I believe from their feedback that the image content was acceptable.

What do people use to up-size (true fractals!?)

Thanks

I just used Photoshop, with resample image set to "bicubic sharper" . I set up an action that scales the image 110% with bicubic sharper, then I just hit the keyboard shortcut 5 or 6 times, watching the "file size" section of the window in the lower left-hand corner until it passes 48 meg.

I did have one rejected because of artifacts doing it this way, but I've had 8 accepted. Alamy just got my 2 DVD's full of files that were processed this way, we'll see what they think.

I do a similar thing using photoshop but use bicubic smoother. I also created an action to upsize it.. but the action upsizes the image only 105% at a time but repeats itself 10 times giving me proper sized images. This way i can click on automate and click on a directory and come back 8 hours later and have 80 images upsized.

I use bicubic smoother because that is what adobe sudjests to use for upsizing.
bicubic sharper is for downsizing i think
quoted from the adobe manuel
Bicubic Sharper -'A good method for reducing the size of an image based on Bicubic ineterpolation with enhanced sharpeneing. This method maintains the detail in a resampled image. If Bicubic Sharper oversharpens some areas of an image, try Bicubic.'

I upsize in batches of around 100 or so using Adobe PhotoShops CS2 "image processor" script. I have had 2 out of 497 fail my last batch sent to alamy...I copy all the horizontal images in one folder and all the vert in the other, and then do the upsizing thanks to CS2's much improved enlarging software. I just sit back with a coffee as the hundreds of already keyworded images get upsized to 55MB.

I've used Genuine Fractals for my QC batch. I'll probably do the same for my next submission.

Yep, it's that damn 1 fail all fail QC that got me.... I'll try again...
Thanks All.

how are you keywording the images before batching?

Alamy received my test disk on August 11th and i`m still waiting.
How long does this process normally take?

08/25/2005 04:57:27 PM · #272
With both of my first two disks it took about 3 calendar weeks, give or take a day. My third and fourth disks are still in the mail to them... Good luck and many sales!

to Muckpond- Look back a page or so, the answer is there....

just heard back from Alamy, all 160 images passed and are now keyworded and submitted. Now if I could sell a couple, you'd have a more exuberant post.

the 10 repeats of 105% is an interesting way to do that. I'll have to try.

The two that got rejected the first time, I reprocessed and submitted with the big batch, and they passed this time - so I guess re-trying is a good thing.

now I've got a update button really worth clicking, the browser refresh on my sales report page!

good luck all...
