True, I was just curious as to what Paul originally imagined. Although the photos of Paul trying to get model releases from the riot police would be great for a 'silly bugger about to get hit with a batton' challenge.. :-).

I buy a bit of stock and I see more of this type of 'editorial' stuff on Alamy and other strictly stock sites. I have always wondered why people wouldn't have them on an editorial/reportage service like AP or reuters. Or maybe they do as well? Paul?

Cheers, Me.

RHoldenSr,
I have used resize pro from //www.fredmiranda.com to upsize images from within photoshop CS2 for Alamy. I've upsized 55 images so far with it and they've accepted every one. It is much cheaper than genuine fractals. Just to let you know my experience...

Just thought you guys might like to know that Fred has a new version of Resize out. It's only $25. I just bought it and it seems to work great.

I wanted more clarity on the issue of model releases so I wrote to Alamy this morning.

Basically, the deal is this:

If you are submitting images portraying people (this includes tribals, silhouettes and body parts even if the face is not visible) under Alamy's Royalty Free license they should have model releases. The lady said their RF clients would expect this.

However, such images being submitted under the L license can be used for editorial purposes without a model release. They cannot be used for advertorial or pure advertising purposes without a model release.

On asking for further clarity about what fell into the realms of editorial, the lady said that most articles and write ups in magazines do qualify as editorial.

They would expect model releases for RF images even if the face is NOT visible???? That makes no sense... Why would they need that? Unless laws in other places are different than in the U.S.?

Was there any kind of a cheaper "upgrade" price for those of us with the last version of resizepro? :-)

The reason I ask, is that you've not got a model release, and there are no details in the description as to the event/protest/dates etc..

To use such an image without model release it'd have to be editorial, and without details of the protest that would be a bit hard, of have I missed something about the process along the way?

You might have a point about nothing in the description, i should really get round to updating those, but all the information is in the keywords - G8 protests, Edinburgh... oops... it seems i forgot to even put edinburgh in the keywords... will fix that :)

The thinking behind it as a stock shot is that it would be quite appropriate to illustrate one facet of the event - specifically how police used hugely excessive force in a situation that was hardly a protest at all, and charged with riot shields and batons at innocent onlookers. Someone looking to illustrate an article about the event in Edinburgh may find that shot useful to illustrate overwhelming police force with no actual efforts to oppose it from the so-called "protesters".

Also the model release business isn't such a big issue in the UK, since a release isn't actually needed - just preferable for selling images overseas, but it's not likely that this image would ever be used except for an article pertaining to Edinburgh. Also of course the difficulty of obtaining a model release from violent riot police, and the impossibility of picking a moment when a crowd of people are all facing away from the camera.

By the way, i'm Eugene, not Paul :)

I just got a nice little surprise. Just got back from vacation and checked my account on Alamy. Woo hoo! I got my very first stock sale - an RF pic sold last week for $170. I've been really slow on getting my photos up there and only have 42 with them right now, so this was nice to see. (Paul, you can add me to your list).

Maybe we can add a figure in brackets after any photogs who have sold images (if they are willing to disclose numbers)?
So Dogz needs a (1) and Jodie needs a (trillions).

:o)

I'm starting to build up a stock library of famous music performers and shots from festivals. Without a release form, would Alamy sell these shots for editorial use only?
08/10/2005 09:13:34 AM · #240
Alamy won't stop reject an image based on lack of model release - it's more a case that they'd remind you that it may have less chance of being sold without one - but that's up to their clients to decide - all you need to on loading is to mark whether you have a release or not.

Certainly I hadn't realised that model releases were not required for use in editorial articles in newspapers and magazines (which would make up the majority of the non-advertising content).

Sure. It's this one. And no I'm not the only one. I'd love to get up to Jodie's level some day.

could someone answer these questions related to keywording, or maybe summarize the process?

* are the keywords embedded in the image file, or are they held somewhere else?
* do you apply the keywords online (over the internet), or do you do it offline?
* if offline, what tool do you use (can you use ps?)?
* do you do it one image at a time, or can you do it in batches?
* is there any difference between keywording for alamy than other agencies?

thanks!!
08/10/2005 10:02:31 AM · #243
Skip

Keywords can either be added via Photoshop (at least they can in CS and CS2, I don't know about earlier versions) and possibly other image-processing apps too.

You can also add Captions via Photoshop.

Both will be picked up by Alamy and fed into the appropriate fields in their storage database.

Alternatively you can add them online via an interface on the Alamy site itself. This is a pain in the proverbial and I'm doing it now for a whole big batch of images I forget to keyword before sending in... sigh!

You kind of do it on one image at a time but Alamy does allow copy and paste so you can effectively do quite a few in a short time.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the PS keywording interface either so it's an annoying task whenever you do it.

Can't answer your last question, insufficient experience.

I just dropped a test disk in the post, so fingers crossed.
I have made about $500 at the pennystocks from about 100 images.
Hopefully i can move up a level.

Doug

I don't know about an upgrade price, but I got 30% (purchase price of $17) off with a special Fred is running, I think through the 20th of August. Ask at the site.

Thank You Paul.

I also found photographersdirect.com, the imagery on it is amazing.
Does anyone have experience with these guys? They look very tempting.

Hey ya I'm new to this site. I also sell stock...

I've been contributing to Alamy since Nov 2004, and currently have 1242 image online. I basically have been submitting images from my travels throughout Europe and the Middle East. I have only recently brought my 300D, so I have thousands of negatives to scan also from my film SLR...

I use Photoshop CS2, Genuine Fractuals, Imatch (to keyword and import IPTC data) and LZW compression.

//www.tinyurl.com/5hvh9 - MY ALAMY PORTFOLIO

HAVE YOU HAD SALES??? Yes. I have had a sale every month for the last 4 months...which is a nice income on top of my full time job...but be patient people... Most buyers take around 3 months from first seeing the image and downloading the small sample image, before they purchase the licienced image. Don't even bother selling stock if you want to make a quick dollar, and don't even bother selling stock if you sell the image for a dollar.

I also contribute to PhotographersDirect.com, MyLoupe.com and PhotoNewZealand.com.

Grant
