Will you folks stop submitting for a while! I've been waiting for a fortnight for my QC now and i bet it's because of you lot :P

Posting real names doesn't tell me much, I haven't had a chance to look at everybody's profile, to me most of you are still your user names. So, is mavrik one of those? Or did he give up, I believe he threatened to cause of a problem with his pics. I hope he didn't, he sounded so determined to see how this process worked and I know we could all learn from any problem he might have had. I don't know if I have PM capablity, so could someone PM him and asked him to come back to this thread with an update?
07/13/2005 12:12:59 AM · #155
Mavrik isn't one of those but you have PM capability so you could shoot him a message if you wanted.

do you pay to submit on this site?
What is the big deal on thisd site, this is if there is one! :)
What makes it so diferent from the otherS?

Alamy is one of the bigger names in stock photography although not as big as say corbis or getty images... However they a quite a step up from microstock sites, you get paid real money for every shot you sell. I guess the question we are all trying to figure out is how often images get sold.

No, you don't. Just have to be accepted. Their standards are quite a bit higher than the pennystocks.

Have given real names because that's how the images are credited on Alamy so you won't find anything at Alamy under Kavey or Ganders.

Don't forget you can go to Community> Photographers' Profiles and search on real names to find matching DPC names.

But to aid the search:

Kavey = Kavita Favelle
Ganders = Pete Favelle
Leaf = Tyler Olson
DSWebb = Doug Webb
JodieCoston = Jodie Coston (!)

Mavrik hadn't got accepted last time he mentioned it (that I saw) because he'd overlooked one or more of their submission criteria - I think one was the instruction to save TIFFS according to PC Byte Order (rather than Macintosh) and possibly on of their other requirements too, I don't recall. I do hope he'll have another go.

Mavrik = Matt Antonino

On that note, can I stress that it's very important to read through their submission guidelines IN DETAIL before prepping images to send - you're wasting your time and theirs if you don't.

As for sales levels we haven't had any yet but we haven't got many images up and they are somewhat specific rather than what one might call more generic product stock. We have travel and animal stock up with Alamy rather than everyday items and I don't know how well they do on those type of images.

Still. You got to be in it to win it, right? I KNOW I ain't gonna sell anything if it's sitting on my hard drive at home!

GOOD LUCK, everyone!

W00T! My test cd got accepted, just finished keywording my first 14 images. None of them are visible yet but here's the link.

Now to send more!

All right! Will be looking forward to seeing them when they're up. Thanks for the link.

I just resampled them in the photoediting program i use, corel photopaint 11. It's generally very similar to photoshop (but better :P). They were mainly wildlife shots with only slight crops, so i only had to upsize to 150% at most. The automagic resampler photopaint uses makes it look very smooth at that sort of increase. Seems the 20D is easily capable of producing shots that look great at this size, even with quite strong crops, as long as you do all the postprocessing after the resample.

Well done, riot.

It's worth noting that Genuine Fractals gives 20 rescales in the demo version, so you can go through and resize enough shots for the QC submission. :-D

There's not a huge amount of difference between that and even normal PS7 rescaling (not stepped), but if my shots get accepted and I'm submitting more I think I will buy it just for that little extra help.

Thanks :) I'd be really interested to hear other alamy success stories here too, and what sort of sales folks are making?

Yeah, trouble is it needs PS to work and i don't use it. Do you know about any similar programs that can run standalone rather than as a plugin?

Ah, I didn't realise it was only a plug-in, that sucks. :-( No sorry I don't know any alternatives..

Actually I only missed one thing - I didn't submit in 1x write speed and for some reason they couldn't read my DVD. *sigh*

Ok, thanks to some motivation, I'll try again. I will put a new dvd in the mail tomorrow.

My apologies, I recalled some confusion on your part about the byte order and that's what stuck in my mind.

YOU CAN DO IT!

At the end of the day, it's another sales avenue for your work, it may or may not turn up with anything but... it's worth another try, right?
07/14/2005 06:55:59 PM · #171
Definitely. :) I just picked up a third job - why not a fourth! At least it would be related to two other jobs I have! lol

But anyways - I'll try, we'll see. I'll report again.

Well, my shots are up now so this led me to wonder... who here has actually sold something yet? Is anyone making a fortune on alamy? Has anyone been a member for years and never sold anything? Tell us your story!

Gee, your exclusive club sure sounds exciting, but i'm in no mood for being datamined tonight. Still, i'd like to know about DPCers on alamy.

riot, I just went and tried the link to your images again, figuring they're bound to be up now (mine took 24hrs), but it still shows nothing...? Does it show up for you? Just wanted to let you know, in case something is broken and you hadn't realized it yet. I'm sure Alamy makes mistakes every now and then, just like everybody else.

And I haven't sold anything there yet. But only been a member for about 2 months, and only 15 approved images in that time. My second DVD is just now in the QC line.
