Straight from the horses mouth (well, the nice support people at Alamy):

"Yes we do. Kindly note that the only type of compression that we
are happy for contributors to use is LZW compression for Tiffs"

Pawdrix: either by using some fancy software like Genuine Fractals (which is the one Alamy recommends) or possibly the fancier resizing features in the more recent PS versions - although what Alamy would think to that, I don't know.

How do you resize-up, to such large files. My images with the D70(6.1)are at 2000x3000. Is it a RAW thang?

Not really, but it does help.
I use extensis pixel smart scale to upsize my images. I take an 8 bit tiff at 18MB to about 50mb with no "noticable" image degredation. I'm not saying that it doesn't degrade the image, I'm just saying that I can't tell from viewing at 100%.

Thanx both of you.

I've heard of Fractals but where in PS CS might I find this function?

It's not part of PS CS. Genuine Fractals is a standalone program.
07/08/2005 10:27:40 AM · #130
It's a third-party plugin; you can get a demo from here but the full version isn't cheap.

On a happy note, I've just noticed they've finally got it working for CS2 now! :-)

image/image size/
at the bottom of the window bicubic is default I think.
you can choose smoother or sharper versions of bicubic.
what you do at this point is increase your image by 10%
and repeat the process to get the size that you need.

edit: this is how to upsample with photoshop, but the program
I use is a third party plugin

I've seen Genuine Fractals, it looks great but...

"or possibly the fancier resizing features in the more recent PS versions "

was what I was looking for. I'll go cheap to upsize a few prints a little...see what happens.

Got it. Thanks.

Jodie, Pete (Ganders) got that information back from Alamy about their acceptance of LZW compression just as you also posted to say the same.

It makes sense to me that they would accept it but...

They need to clarify their submission guidelines to

a) state that LZW compression is accepted

and

b) state what resolution they'd like images to be in a way that is not related to file size, since when compressed, files of the same resolution will, of course, be smaller. Many of us understand that 48 MEG is shorthand for a resolution that provides roughly 16,000,000 pixels but many people don't have that understanding.

There's another thread around here somewhere that talks about Fred Miranda's ResizePro [ //www.fredmiranda.com/software/ ] and says it's as good or better than Genuine Fractals... and a lot cheaper.

I don't know if resizepro is better than GF, as I've never used GF. But, I've submitted images to Alamy upsized with resizepro, and they all got accepted. And I was certainly impressed with the quality of resizepro. Just a note from a satisfied user... :-) It's certainly a lot cheaper than GF.

Up at the very top of your screen, there's a drop-down box that says "thread options" - you can pick "watch" from there. :)

Jodie, do you usually go for royalty free or rights managed?
07/12/2005 01:25:36 AM · #140
Mavrik started this thread, hope he updates us soon on how far he's got.

Yep. I was going to ask for a 'roll call' of who has and hasn't got in so far.

I'm sending my DVD off today.

Good question superdave - I'd like that answered too.

I'm interested to know this too.

Pete and I have gone for rights managed so far given the type of images we've put in but when we add more stocky images we'll probably put those in on royalty free.

You can add Doug Webb to that list if you want. They currently have my second DVD in their QC pipeline. I still wish you could see how many times your images have been viewed on their site...

Hey, I'd be very interested to see any of your portfolio's there, if you're willing to share them. Mine is at:

Wish we could see how often they had been viewed too...

Kavey,
Thanks, and very nice. I particularly liked the sleaping seal (sea lion?) and the crab with red legs. Lion was very cool too. Was he wild? Good luck selling!

You're in my good books, Doug - all of those were mine :-)

Yup, all wild - lions were in Botswana, the crab and that particular seal were both in the Galapagos.

Now if only someone would buy some of the damn things... /sigh
