Doug, no Alamy sales for us yet - mine only appeared for sale today, and there's just 26 of them. Pete has even less and they've been there only a couple of months, less I think.

We'll work on adding more when we can.

But we're more likely to make a sale if they're on there than if they're sitting gather digital dust, so to speak, on our hardrives at home!

True true. I plan on submitting more too, but I don't think I could ever come close to 1,800!!! Wow.... I'll be lucky to reach 180! :-)

Good luck to you!

Well, it's been a long, slow road getting there... :) I try and make between 10 and 20 images a day and send off a CD every week or so.

It's turned into a living for me, but only because my very understanding husband thought I should follow my dream to be a stock photographer and was willing to live frugally for a long time while I built up my inventory of images. :)

so - are you literally just shooting with the D70 - upsizing, and sending off?

my workflow for my own prints is more long winded, as theres only select shots which i upload to my gallery after some touching up.

MAGNUM is a closed shop, you have to be invited to join

It sure would be. Magnum is a different type of agency. It is much more specialized in the editorial areas of stock photography.

I can only answer for me but... the ones that just got approved for me were D70 images, taken last summer as jpegs not raw, processed in Photoshop for levels and everything else I felt they needed included masked layers to burn in skies etc. Some had minor crops too. Then upsized. No noise reduction. No sharpening.

I know have a Canon 20D and shoot in RAW so will change that workflow somewhat as more processing will be done during raw conversion but, otherwise similar.

Any news from anybody?

I've since heard that Alamy isn't the first call for travel photography which I kind of knew already but I can't get my stuff onto those sites as they either have minimum number requirements that are far above my portfolio or they are still accepting slide only.
Still... one never knows.
I have too few images there to expect much though I have sent another CD with another 66 images and will try and build on that as and when I can.

has anyone tried upsizing with the newer Photoshop bicubic smoother and bicubic sharper algorithms?

i demo'd genuine fractals, but i found the results using bicubic smoother to be just as good. we'll see what alamy says, i suppose.

How do you do that Rob?

If you shoot RAW, in the RAW pluggin (CS 2), you have the option of upsizing directly. From what I've seen, it looks just as good as GF if not a bit better when looked at 100%.

Any body else think so?

in the Image Size dialog box, check the "resample image" checkbox and then choose "bicubic smoother" or "bicubic sharper."

i will post some 100% crops soon, but i can't get to my "real" computer right now.

i'm very interested to hear other opinions, though. i send in a trial disk to alamy using the Photoshop upsizing.

My original submission of 15 has been up for a couple weeks now, and no sales. :-) We can dream about quick results, huh? :-)

I've got another DVD with 41 images on it just waiting to be mailed. Hopefully that will help.

The one thing that bugs me is that you can't even see how many times your images have been looked at on Alamy. So you don't know if nobody has even SEEN your images yet, or maybe 100 people have looked at them but nobody has thought they were good enough to buy... Which is it? Or am I missing something? Is there a way to see how many times they've been viewed by people? Anyone found it?

I agree. With PS7 I found it to be visually almost identical at 100%.

Edit: That's with 250% up-sampling from a 6.3 MP image.

Here's a sample image, upsized from a 6.3 MP 300D shot to 250%, then cropped at 1:1..

For people that have got into Alamy - do you save your TIFFs with or without compression? Also, what size images do you submit in pixels?

Interesting... to my eye the GF version looks to be sharper than the PS one, but I'll be interested to hear if that's just my subjective eye!

On the TIFF compression front, I have been using uncompressed TIFFs but looking at their submission guidelines they don't seem to insist on this - I've dropped them an email to check, and will let you know what they say!

I agree about the Geniune Fractals one being sharper. I think the simple shapes help. For the kind of work I'll be submitting I think I might invest, not sure yet..

Thanks for the query email, Pete.

Finally got my CD ready for submission.
I'll be sendging it out in the next day or two.

As per their submission guidelines: TIFFS with no compression at all, 8 bit colour depth, no layers.

I resize images to ensure they are 48 MEG files, which is, depending on their ratio, very roughly 5000 x 3300 pixels. That's a rough idea.

and if I'm correct they prefer the Adobe RGB color space.

Yep, that's right.

Ahh yes, it's buried halfway down their submission help page:

"Please ensure that the file is not compressed in any way"

Damn, now my email will make me look like I can't read ;-)

Weirdo. You're the one who pointed these details out to me when I first asked.

They do allow you to use LZW compression, though it doesn't say it on their site. I've received confirmation from member services on that and it makes waaaaay more images fit on a CD or DVD. I've been sending my images that way since last November.

PaulMdx or anyone-

How do you resize-up, to such large files. My images with the D70(6.1)are at 2000x3000. Is it a RAW thang?
