That is wierd.
Maybe it got lost within the system?
Id suggest e-mailing them to check in.

So it looks like some dpcers are getting into Alamy...anyone with sales?

What are your images worth, etc.?

Well it depends on what the images are used for.
But I tried pricing an image just for fun. I did over 1 million circulation and advertising (pretty much the extreme), it priced it at around 14,000. That would be a rare sale I think, most people say they have a picture sell from around 200-600.

I was looking through their requirements for submission.
all I have to say is holy hell! a 48MB 8bit image! I think
people shoot 6 megapixel cameras are going to struggle to keep
image quality up to par! I'm not saying that it can't be done,
just very difficult to upsample that much and maintain quality.

superdave, that's exactly what I thought. I think DPCers are doing it from 6 MP cameras though. I wonder what the quality is like..

Programs like Genuine Fractals are suppose to make the increase easy without decreasing the quality. Although I havent had much success with it myself so far.

My understanding is that the 48 mp size can be met with a TIFF image file, which is uaually 3-4 times larger than a JPG. Starting with TIFFs and using Genuine Fractals apparently results in acceptable quality at Alamy. That's just what I have picked up from reading the forums, I have no first hand experience.

I would highly recomend "Resize Pro" from //www.fredmiranda.com for upsizing pictures. Much less expensive than Genuine Fractals, and it did a fantastic job on my shots. At least in my opinion. Alamy hasn't reviewed them yet, so I don't know what THEY think of it yet!

I noticed someones portfolio on Alamy (I forget who's) were all licensed images. What made you pick the licensed route rather than just royalty free? I've been wondering, if mine get accepted, which route to go. But I'd been leaning toward RF, what made you go to L? Any advice there for me? Thanks.

well if convert a raw to an 8 bit tiff I get a 18mb file, a 16 bit image will get me 36mb, but they want you to submit 8 bit. I have been using Extensis Pixel Smart to enlarge with. I have played around with a few of my pics and many of them just aren't worthy of that kind of enlargement. But it could, maybe, possibly, be me and not my equipment, but just maybe! :D

edit: ok nevermind, I think I have the hang of this now!

So what happened? It's been a while since they received your CD. Did you get approved or not?

They want me to resubmit because something happened to the files or something? I don't really understand it... They said they were unable to retrieve all my files and the ones they could weren't the right files? I checked the cd before sending so I'm confused. I still don't know if I'm going to resubmit. Seems like a pain in the butt.

Don't give up. Did you make sure you submitted TIFFs in pc format? While I use an Apple computer, photoshop gives me files readable by both types of machines. I know also they want you to burn the cd or DVD at only 1X rather than the 8X my burner is capable of. I sent a DVD rather than a CD.

Good luck!

I sent a dvd burned at 8x... I didn't even see that they want 1x? Why?? I dunno. We'll see I guess. I submitted TIFFs, yes, to get to the file size. Um, what pc? I did what they said to, I thought.

if you're using Photoshop, when you save a TIFF the dialog box has an option for "byte order," which lets you choose PC or Macintosh.

i don't really know the technical difference, but i know it matters to some people. i think that's what they were talking about for the TIFFs in PC format. not "saved on a PC" but "saved using the PC byte order."

i have no clue why the 1x/8x thing would make a difference. it's the same data getting written.

I should have said windows format rather than mac.

Not all DVD readers can read files burned at 8X. The reason they wanted 1X rather than 8X is to avoid errors in the burning process. It is stated on their site. 8X is relatively new - and while I have a new computer that can read it, my older computer would not read all of the files my separate DVD burner could burn. So perhaps that is the reason they couldn't read it - an incompatiblity with their system. I don't know of the R+ and R- make a difference either.

I remember seeing on their site they said to burn discs at 1x, "to prevent errors" or something like that. My burner (I also did a DVD) can't burn at 1x. The slowest option was 2.4x, so I burned at that speed. Evidently it was OK for them, as they got the files off and approved them.

And I remember seeing the option for PC or MAC byte order when I saved Tiff out of photoshop. I picked the PC option, as I think they say they want on their website also.

Hope it helps. Try again!

I sent 2 discs full to Alamy a while back, they approved all 26 images, which you can see if you search on "Kavita Favelle". I wasn't sure if they'd accept as I applied NO noise reduction whatsoever, so I was prepared to be rejected on all of them.

All were upsampled using Genuine Fractals by a little under 200%.

As Pete and I are trading with them under the same account I'd phoned to find out if they wanted me to send a disc through initial quality control first and they said no, just to send it through as an approved member and they'd check quality at that stage.

So, there you go.

Whether any of them sell is another question but now I know they are happy with my processing quality I can work on the other tonnes of images I have to send in.

All of this stuff (DVD write speed, PC byte order, even what colourspace to be using) is fairly explicitly laid out in their contributors help page.

So, has anybody around here actually SOLD an image off of Alamy? I guess that's the "ultimate test" so to speak... Just wondering...

I see regular sales at Alamy - it varies - sometimes two a day, sometimes I might only sell one a week. Sales are almost always over $100 and commonly around $300. I have about 1800 pictures with them and sales have just really become consistent within the last two months.

I tried making a lightbox to show an example of recent sales:

Lightbox of Recent Sales

These are all mine except the one at the very end that says "corporate viewpoints" - I don't know where that one came from and I can't get rid of it. It's not even my photograph. I think their lightbox thingy is a bit messed up. I also had several sales I tried to add to the lightbox that aren't showing up... But this at least will give you an idea of what is selling on my end of things. I love Alamy. :)

Hey, jodiecoston, thanks for the info! Good to know people actually make sales.

Wow, 1800 images with them, amazing!
