I am curious about this photo as it garnered 37 votes of 3 or less. While it has some flaws - grain in the clouds and softness in some branches - I am a bit suprised at the number of very low scores. I would appreciate some feedback, especially from any who scored it at a 3 or below. Thank you for your thoughts.

Bu..., bu..., But it received 43 votes of 8 or higher!

Hi
I didn't vote on the challenge and it is a fantastic shot, however a letter doesn't stand out and grab you like some of the high finishers. It's the only thing I can see why it would get marked low. A more appropriate challenge topic you may have scored better. Regardless of that you had a lot of positive comments so feel proud of that !

I didn't make it to scoring that one, but the letter(s) just don't pop out at me, which is probably why I didn't score it. It's well taken over all.

Just looking for what drove it down as an image, I learn by hearing what is in the mind of those who, in particular, are critical.

I think it is a good shot composed very well and love the colors. I think what hurt the score was mostly the noise. You also can see horizontal lines in the dark area of the clouds [have to look very close] where neat image tried to lower the noise level. Did you use neat image plug-in or demo? Also even though I understand the title and it is fitting, it took me a few seconds to put together the "A" - the "O" was obvious. So some may have not given themselves time to see the "A" clearly.
Just my 2 cents.

Edit: I did not vote in this challenge.

I would agree with the comments made by SDW65 regarding this photo. I scored this a 9, but do have to tell you that I did have to carefully scrutinize the image to locate the A.

It may well be that some of the scorers did not locate the letters or may have misunderstood the title and therefore scored it low.

Used the Neat Image Plugin.

These comments are truly assisting.

I think the low scores can be accounted for by the fact that it appears to be a sunset that happens to have a (not very prominent) natural letter in it. There's a bit of a backlash running against images that are perceived to have been "shoehorned" into a challenge but which appear only to incidentally meet the challenge, and I can see that applying here.

I gave it a 5 myself; as a picture it's a nice sunset, but for originality in answering the challenge it didn't impress me overmuch.

Robt.

It's a very good picture by itself. It was hard for me to initially locate the letter, but then I took some medication and it showed up nicely. In fact, I saw several other letters...

I gave it a 3 because all I saw was a sunset. Saying the trees formed an A and the sun an O felt like a stretch at best. It seemed like the only reason the trees were there were to frame the shot - the A they formed wasn't a strong component of the subject matter.

I found the A easily. I looked and looked but I never did find a Z. Then I figured it out. Dawn rises slowly here. ;) I gave you a seven, but I like pretty pictures. :)

There were so, so many entries where I couldn't see the letters that it surprised me. Like, I mean it was nearly impossible so I didn't vote on most them. I gave anyone the benefit of the doubt that I might have been lacking in vision and let it slide instead of handing out low votes.

I gave you a 5 because the photo itself was very nice but honestly didn't think the Alpha or the Omega were to strong as accidental letters go.

well what to say.. I had the same problem... I can accept a 5... but more than 30 people vote my shot as really poor without give a reason...

My comment was "Very pretty but I think I would have flipped this image so the Alpha was left of therefore comming before Omega.. Takes a second to spot the letters but is still very well done. Very pleasant image to look at that fitsd the challenge well."

Hmm interesting it was one of my for 9's......

Let's face it...some people a just total knuckelheads. Don't sweat it.

I recieved nine 1's and fourteen 2's. Not the greatest photo...I know but it did meet the challenge and I added some stuff on top which some people saw as a sort of corruption. The other NON Accidental stuff has nothing to do or subtract from the perfectly accidental items in the image but still...1's and 2's? Screw'em!

I got a kick outta the shot and so did others with many nice comments No biggie. Live and learn. Move on.

I looked to see what I voted on this one, and apparently I didn't vote on this one, but I would have gone middle of the road, about a <5>. Sunsets are beautiful, but for me it seems they are dime a dozen. Face it, they happen every day, and every day, thousands of people photograph them. I think that is part of the reason, sunsets, on their own, don't do well. Include something of interest in the sunset, and I'm sure it would score better. That's just my feelings on sunset pics, as a whole.

In most cases the title of an entry is irrelevant - in this challenge they were most helpful. What is Alpha and Omega? I was thinking greek letters at first, you know like used in Fraternities or Sororities, then I got the connection. Not everyone did it appears...

Sunsets can be a two-edged sword. When they are perfect in every respect they can garner high marks. When they have flaws, the fact that there are soooo many darn good sunset photos can really hurt the scores. I did not happen to see the letters. What I saw was a lot of noise and a color palette that seemed a little less than ideal for a sunset - muddy colors. I also found these particular trees not to be photogenic. These flaws kept me from really spending the effort required find the letters. I'm afraid I did not score this image very high as a result of these factors.

I don't think it is right to label someone a knucklehead, or to dismiss them with a "screw 'em", just because they gave your entry a low vote. Those votes are just as valid as the 10s you get, and the 5s, etc. You should take them into consideration and realize that there were that many people who didn't care for the image. Try to figure out what it was they didn't like through comments and threads like this one; and use that knowledge to get fewer low votes with your next entry. Easier said than done, but worth attempting.

I voted it a four, but remember the photo. Maybe four maybe a tad low, but by that time I had seen several A's and was maybe a little burnt out on them, but that is really no excuse. I think it is very pretty, but I scored all these shots based on how much the letters took center stage, and altough omega is somewhat center stage, it was the entire sunset that was the focus of the shot. If the category was accidental letters found at sunset you would have won by a landslide, even just sunsets would have got a high score from me because I think its very pretty. Biggest thing that cause low votes for me, which is apparently a lot based on my profile is A). Would this photo fit in a book named "INSERT CATEGORY TITLE HERE", B) Typical, Generic, Cliche C) Silly Photographer Tricks (out of focus, out of place filters, composition, distracting elements outside of focal point, etc..) I'm sure none of this is helpful, but I'm new, so please forgive me, and I like the picture outside the category of Accidental Letters.
