My brother is a photographer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. As soon as it was apparent that the Pope was in grave condition, they flew him to Rome on Friday afternoon to cover the story. There are quite a few of his shots appearing on their site, here, if you're interested (when you click the individual photos, you can see which ones are his... my brother is Matt Freed):

Post Gazette Photo Journal

He'll likely be covering the events in Rome through the election of a new Pope in the next couple weeks. I'm jealous that he has such an opportunity to see history in the making!

wow, alan, what an incredible set of shots. his work really does tie in with some of the 'photojournalism' threads that have been running lately. thanks for posting up the links!

//www.post-gazette.com/journal/photos_display.asp?ID=15161 is interesting - how did Matt achieve this - dark, lots of DOF, no blur...natural light (or red gel on a flash?)...

What does matt shoot with? (nikon yes, but film or digi?)

I enjoyed looking at the photos your brother took. I couldn't help noticing that his photos are of better quality than by some of the other photographer's photos. What sort of photo equipment does he use?

Wow. He is an inspiration to all of us. I loved looking at his work. He is awesome, and I am happy he works using his talent. Thanks for sharing. It makes me want to go where there are crowds of people and take great shots like that. Audrey

Good question... I kinda wondered about that myself. I would assume that it's a wide, fast lens with natural light... but I have no way of knowing. I'll drop him an e-mail and see what he says.

Everyone at the PG has switched to digital now. I know he uses a Nikon D2H for his sports stuff; I'm not sure what other cameras he uses regularly. Most of the photographers carry at least a couple cameras with them.

Check out the photo here:

Post Gazette Photo Journal

I find it interesting to see how many people are standing by to capture the moment on cell phone cameras!

Just got e-mail back from him... he said it was indeed a very wide, very fast lens in low light.

He said he's starting to run out of ideas for photos... in his words there are "only so many praying and singing photos you can shoot in one week."

He also said that he was lucky to get his credentials at the Vatican in just 10 minutes or so; the reporter he's with had to stand in line for 12 HOURS! He did, however, have to stand in line for 5 hours to photograph the Pope in the Basilica.

//www.post-gazette.com/journal/photos_display.asp?ID=15213 is from an excellent vantage. So much color!

This is another shot of my brother's that I thought I'd share from this morning:

I got e-mail from him yesterday... he just found out that the newspaper is sending him to Monaco to cover the funeral of Prince Rainier. He seems to be on a whirlwind European funeral tour...! :)

Thank You Alan, wondeful shots.

Yeah you can let your brother know we all dig his work :-)

I like the last shot, of the funeral procession, the two guys taking pictures really threw me off (in a good way)..I figured it'd be more staunchy. The two guys really add some character to the shot.

Again, nice work all around.

look at the goofball bishop with his digital camera in this photo. he should be praying, not rubbernecking like an elvis fan. the shame!

Great shot -- solemn and funny at the same time. How come some are bareheaded and some not?

Some of them are hot heads?

Good picture, BTW.

Great picture.
I love the three guys with cameras...

I also like how you can see that they are removing their caps as the pope's procession is passing.

I see 5 Bishops sneaking pics, any more folks! ?

The guys with the cameras surprised me, too. I would have pictured these guys being much, much more restrained and solemn, as opposed to looking like they're at a rock concert :)
