Good use of negative space, too.

still, we're not talking about an obviously superior entry that was unjustly denied its honors - the picture is good (i also gave it a 6), but it's one that doesn't push everyone's buttons in the same way

this entry had 247 votes, out of which 99 were either 5 or 6 --- that pretty much sets the stage for the final tally --- as for the math on the wild votes for this entry, if the 1s and 2s became 3s, the score would have risen from 5.356 to 5.522, taking it from 64th to 49th -- which, while it is a more elevated finish, wouldn't make ME much happier - I want the BLUE RIBBON! :)

a better example from that same challenge would be Painted Horses, which came in 3rd

if the 1s and 2s became 3s, the score would have risen from 6.802 to 6.830 --- enough to edge into 2nd place by 0.001

but then, of course, you'd have to adjust the others' scores accordingly - so it would drop back to 3rd - right where it started

I hate to say it, but this is the first I've been back to this site in over 2 weeks. This site was really hurting my way of thinking as a photographer. This site and others like it do little to help a person grow as a photographer, they do little to encourage someone to continue with their work. I know that not everyone is going to like every photo I take, truthfully that doesn't bother me. But for the most part, from what I've seen on this site, is people that think its cute to give average of 2's and 1's, no matter how good the picture is. Then they leave very ignorant comments. I won't be submitting anymore challenges, too busy to waste my time and talent. Since I've quit coming here, I've had 3 photographs published, 6 models contact me for work, 2 places of business have contacted me for commercial shots, and I've even built a website. I'm sorry to say that these type of sites are really a big waste of time. And they're totally unfair to the photographers. Take care to the few friends I've made here. I'll pop in once in a while and see how you're doing. No I won't be voting. No I won't be submitting. Take care, hope others will wisen up too. Tom

Sorry to hear this Tom. A few bad apples tend to spoil the bunch, but I think the bunch is still a good bunch.
I have personally learned alot. I also take some things with a grain of salt, and sometimes think a challenge isn't going to help me improve, ... until I somehow use that technique or inspiration somewhere else in my photography. I, too, have been called for photo jobs lately (a few), and it is a good feeling. Good luck with it.
I am sorry you were not able to look past the other stuff.

Just for fun John? Sure thats really easy for someone with three first place pictures to say. I for one take my photography serious, and thought by coming to this site would pick up some helpful hints, constructive critisim, and learn something. The only thing I learned was something I already knew. People in genera are rude, inconsiderate, and don't give a sh*t about anyone but themselves. Good luck to the rest of you. I wish I could say its been fun.

This line was upsetting, but then I read the comments Tom has left. Tom you have been very supportive to others, and you will learn that there are those hear that are also very, very, very supportive. I can be one of them from time to time. Karen, Hokie, John, and many many others are great people with great ideas. I owe this weeks photo to the great support I have been given.

The people here are vaired, with a wide range of tastes, styles, and tact. If you hang out, I think you will pick some stuff up. If you just post to have people fawn over you work, you won't find it here. This is a fickle crowd, that know what it likes, and you have to figure if you finish above a 5 you have done something. For me, each 10 is worth 20 1's....which is a good thing because I get plenty of ones.

Wow - what a roller-coaster ride of a thread.

Tom, sorry you didnt enjoy your time with us here but I think it would be wrong of you to try and dissade others from taking part if they want to. Personally I'm having a lot of fun. Just seeing lots and lots of photographs is expanding my horizons. As a good example - I didn't particularly care for the colour in Zeissman's "A is for Apple" when I voted on it. I assumed it was unintentional. I liked everything else about the shot and scored it 7. However, now that he's talked about what he did with the shot I can see that it was 100% intentional. I'm still not a big fan of the colouring but I respect the fact that it was how he wanted it to look.

This is a learning experience for me. It teaches me that not everyone likes colours to look the way I would naturally assume was "correct". It encourages me to play with colours more and see if there are alternative ways of colouring my images that perhaps I and others might like.

Look for lessons and you will learn.

John.

Ps Drew - I wish to appologise unreservedly for the Spice Girls.

Pps. BigSmiles - I believe you have something to say to us about Celine Dion and Bryan Adams?

Well, I could post my resume on here to try and win support for my ideas but....it all boils down to whether you got what it takes to do well...HERE.

I like that. I like the fact people will dump on photos from experienced people and praise photos from new people with their first camera.

My only complaint has been and will always be that the nature of the net does not lend itself well to leaving voting anonymous even after the final tally.

But all this "I'm great this site sucks for not realizing my greatness" just negates any serious discussion or consideration.

I thought the Old Woman In The Train was a fabulous photo. Yes, the window was blown out, but if the photographer had exposed for the window, her face would have been in complete darkness. If he had elected not to take the picture because of the extreme exposure latitude, we would have missed out on a great shot. I actually thought the white background helped accentuate the woman. If there were trees or buildings in the background, it would have been a distraction.
My 2 cents.

To be honest:

When I saw Shizzam's piece of lemon, i wanna lick it :)

when I saw the forbidden fruit, well, i wannna eat it,

but when I saw your images, i am thinking "hmm, that lemonade, does itlook clean?" The vegetables doesn't look interesting

part of it has to do with how people perceives photography. When I see your photograph, i see objects, but I'd rather be inspired. When i saw a photograph that touch me, it means something. Fruits and Vegetables though is really just for fun.

Find a way to communicate with your viewers. That's the key -- sometimes, you get DOGGED on this website for making them viewer feel SICK, but if you do that, you have suceeded in your vision of giving the viewer a feeling.

I get the same score with a picture I didn't really like as the one I really did like. What gives guys? Your voting strategies are so erratic it's frustrating! You like an old lady sitting in a train beside a TOTALLY BLOWN OUT window and she wins first place. Had the person in the train been a regular person countless people would have nitpicked the blown out window. (i'm only using that picture as an example.. dont be offended)

now I'm the first one to admit that the picture I submitted for the candid challenge was not my best work. I got low 5's and that's not so bad seeing as how the voting goes around here. This week, however, I submitted a picture I am pleased with, took much time to set up, the lighting is fine, the composition is sensible and there are little to no technical errors.... and I'm still in low 5's!!!! Pardon me for saying WHAT GIVES? Just cuz it's fruits and veggies I gotta do something outrageous to get your attention? Even when most of the outrageous shots are technically lacking in some form

I've had enough with this place.. back to school I go...

Personally i like the USA stamp on my passport.

I can pass through Europe without getting visas, i can pass through other countries without the hassles.

I am also targeted as a potential terrorist hostage, but that makes me prouder :) (well, since I am "Asian American", i don't think this applies to me as much because I am also often viewed as "not an American", but whatever -- i can own guns and refuse to be searched during traffic stops, try to do that in other parts of the world and see what happens) Because we happen to have clean air and water, well, mostly clean.... (better than 90% of the world population) and we tend to meddle with other people's businesses (as in Middleeast) to protect our supremacy, and rightly so. I don't want a country like Iraq to have control over the middle-east, nor would i want Germany to take control over Europe 50 years ago. Because of that, people tend to hate us.

But I'll agree with some of the people from other parts of the world -- the "average" American probably doesn't know anything from other cultures other than apple pie. most of my classmates when I was in high school in middle America have never travelled outside of the STATE, much less abroad :-) And visionary Americans are not the norm, nor are visionary foreigners i'd suspect.

If the rest of the world doesn't understand "Americans", then how come Ansel Adams is the world premier nature photographer of his time? How come guys like Galen Rowell gets respect from all over the world? They're all photographers, excuse me, WORLD CLASS photographers, and they have vision. The average person do not have vision, whether they come from the US or not.

(Hence, to answer the original person's question -- yes, you photos can SUCK, or the average person just don't understand it. That's life. I don't particularly think your fruit shot is special, but then again, i might be the mediocre type :) But.... back to my point: you don't have to ever BEEN to Yosemite valley to love Winter Clearing Storm, or ever been to Tibet to love that rainbow shot over the buddhist palace (Galen Rowell's most famous piece) Most people don't understand the difference between their vacation photos and a master like Rowell -- i have heard this many times whenever I visit poster stores or photography galleries "Hey, why would you pay for that? My photos look the same" :) I think that speaks for itself)

I can relate to what Karen is feeling sometimes when people think they know you just because you have USA stamped on your passport. Its like other stereotype behaviour and there is one hot button that just freaks me out is the stereotype button.

Anyway..I think the folks that hang out here at DP Challenge are far from being the kind of dunderheads that inhabit the rest of the world on average.

I think when we talk about trying to be open minded to the photographers here (and I have been guilty of this myself) we may be preaching to the choir.

We may disagree at times but on the whole I think we may be more liek each other here than we could imagine. :-)

Interesting that you consider your right to own a gun as one of the positive things about being an American.

Ok, sorry... I just couldn't let this one slide. I had to physically restrain my fingers from replying, and now they're loose.

Look, if you want constructive criticism, you are getting it by being here. It doesn't sound like you want constructive criticism at all -- you only want to hear what's good about your pictures... and that's not going to teach you anything. I've looked through the comments on your pictures, and constructive criticism, with very few exceptions, is what's there. I didn't see anything that said "this sucks" or anything along those lines... just honest opinions.

My picture this week is getting a lot of negative comments, and a fairly low score, and I'm WELCOMING this because I'm honestly here to learn. My idea of negative space was a little different than most, and thanks to a lot of great submissions this week and the comments on my shot, I have learned a lot about this area of photography that I didn't previously know much of anything about... and I'll be able to apply this knowledge and better technique in the future.

If you consistently score low here, you can obviously benefit from the opinions being offered, even if not everyone here is an "expert."

Sorry for the rant, but this kind of comment strikes me as being hypocritical. If you REALLY want to learn from constructive criticism, learn to take the suggestions along with the compliments.

Tom, what would have to happen for you to be able to have fun here? I take my photography seriously too. I came to this site with the same intentions you mentioned. I have learned quite a bit and I am continuing to learn here all the time.

Would it be better if you could hand select the people you interface with? I think it's quite arrogant of you to collectively group everyone here into the categories that you have....

Oculo-Rectitis is curable...

Tom:

It's always hard to see that one isn't as good as one thinks. I like to think I am hot shit sometimes, but this challenge puts me straight. There is an endless amount of phenomenal photographers out there, and there will always be many that do better than me with certain subjects than what I can do.

I am competitive, but the real reason I come back to DPC, is because I learn, all the time....

My recommendation Tom; if this site frustrates you, don't show your photography to such a broad audience, maybe in a situation where you can explain your thoughts and perception, which may help people appreciate what you do from an other angle..... BTW, I gave you violin shot a 9.

Good luck!

never mind 'Prisoner' ... cell block H

And if you won't take responsibility for the Crocadile Hunter, then
you must at least shoulder some blame for Crocadile Dundee.

I'll take Kylie Minogue as an apology, come to think about it. But
then there is her sister, which you can take back too.

Anyway, enough Aussie bashing :)

Actually, I am beginning to wonder if I have what it take to put my photos up for ridicule.

I have gotten a lot of really great commments this time, my first one scored me a ten. But I am getting a few that have nothing to do with the image I posted this week. Comparing my work to previous weeks instead, and marking me down because of it. Would these people mark down Ansel Adams for taking to many scenics?

Is it wrong to want to perfect a certain style of photography? And using the challenges to expand on that style? Do we have to shoot in a brand new style every week? Is there anything wrong with having trademark shots that are identifiable as your own? Most pro's strive for that. Why should I be marke down for using the same subject twice in two weeks if each one is shot in a new way?

I AM too sensitive I know. I do not expect to win a competition, I do not mind a low score, and no comments, or comments that point to a fault in the image. There are probably 5 good comments for every so-so one, and there are no real bad ones. Still it bothers me. OK!

Zeiss. I gave you an 8 last week.... I think it was a terrific shot. I love shooting children! Do stick to your style and subject! The only reason I try to shoot a little bit of everything is that I haven't really found a niche yet.

I think I marked you up again this week...
