down, zeissman. if you look at the picture it is titled strange fruit. billie holiday wrote and recorded a song called strange fruit referring to the lynchings in the south.

by the way, on the way to my in-laws house, there is a power line also with shoes hanging from it. what is up with that? why would you throw perfectly good shoes over a power line? am I missing something here?

I know how you feel, last week I shot about 8 shots, made it black and white, ran a sharpeneing filter and submitted, and did fairly well.

This week I shot and shot, played with lighting, spent quite a bit of time post processing, and have on of my favorite photos or all time, and I am looking to finish in the bottom half of the pack.

Oh well, I know my tie in to the challenge was not as strong as I wanted (had to use a replacement for what I wanted), and there is some amazing stuff this week. I was guite stunned when I looked at the entrants Sunday night.

You like an old lady sitting in a train beside a TOTALLY BLOWN OUT window and she wins first place. Had the person in the train been a regular person countless people would have nitpicked the blown out window. (i'm only using that picture as an example.. dont be offended)

now I'm the first one to admit that the picture I submitted for the candid challenge was not my best work. I got low 5's and that's not so bad seeing as how the voting goes around here. This week, however, I submitted a picture I am pleased with, took much time to set up, the lighting is fine, the composition is sensible and there are little to no technical errors.... and I'm still in low 5's!!!! Pardon me for saying WHAT GIVES? Just cuz it's fruits and veggies I gotta do something outrageous to get your attention? Even when most of the outrageous shots are technically lacking in some form

I've had enough with this place.. back to school I go...

I don't think that was the point. Not when we were talking about American Culture.

Zeiss... I really liked GeneralE's photo and quoted the song to show I recognised the reference in the title. I adore that song. I have an album of Billie Holiday music that I listen to constantly.

It is estimated that there are more than 10 million malnourished children in the US!

yup - that's a universal culture - millions of people having kids they can't afford to feed

So long as we're taking responsibility for McDonald's, I think someone should be apologizing for the Spice Girls and the Crocodile Hunter.

This was my whole point. Perhaps it was missed.

Crocodile Hunter was made by an American cable network, and never screened on Australian TV until a year or so after it screened over there :)

We would never give that guy his own TV show. Honestly, you guys...

I believe there are a couple possibilities. They may be worn-out. Or if they're good, a pretty good way to establish your dominance over another is to "lynch" their $120 sneakers, no?
Or, to be more in line with my original point, how about the "lynching" of young black men by convincing them that they need $120 sneakers...distorting their economic futures.

Hey, it is not just young black men that are being "lynched" that way. In my area, it is predominantly white and Cherokee Indian and we deal with the same things. That ain't a black thing, that's a lynching of young america, period.

Apparently about as many ways as you or anyone. Did you understand the point, or blow it off to blah blah blah?

I just spent $175 on a pair of sneakers and now you're telling me I'm being lynched by Corporate America?

OH MY GOD IF I ONLY KNEW THIS YESTERDAY.

Why would you ever spend that kind of $$ on sneakers in the first place?
*grin*.

I dunno. In reality, I just spent $40 on a sweet pair of Adidas, but I've spent years of hard work and practice becoming a sarcastic prick.

Stick them on an old tractor, take a picture of them and you could win the DP Challange! This will justify the expense.

Strange Fruit
Lewis Allen*/Billie Holiday

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Mostly -- it is credited to Lewis Allen/Billie Holiday, but "...sources document Lewis Allen as a pen name for Abel Meeropol. Abel Meeropol was a Jewish school teacher in New York who wrote the poem, Strangefruit as a result of seeing photographs of a lynching."

You can read about the first performance and find a link to a sound file at
strangefruit.org.
