A number of you were looking at the Apple's iPod Photo direct link device for transferring images direct from camera to the iPod... this has just begun shipping... see above.

I think this is just the dock to sync to your PC/mac. If you want to transfer from your camera to the iPod you need the Belkin camera link or memory reader.

I have the dock and memory reader and both work well. (Note: you can't see you new photo's on the ipod until they have been run into the computer.

I presume its possible to put .RaW files on the Ipod?

You use the iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0??

How does it work exactly? Will the Ipod detect the camera (in my case the 20D) and offer to snatch all the files from the memory card?

Yes, the iPod photo handles RAW files just fine. Apple's camera connector provides a USB port so you can plug your camera's USB cable into the iPod and clear off your memory card. From there, you can view the files on the built in screen (too small) or as a slide show on a TV. When you drop the iPod into its dock, it will automatically synchronize your images with iPhoto (on a Mac).

There are better, dedicated solutions for photographers, but as a secondary function to a great music player, the iPod Photo isn't bad.

Are you sure you can now review your new photo's on the iPod without sync'ing with iTunes? All the previous connectors would not allow this.

I don't really care about Itunes. I just want to dump pictures from my 20D on the Ipod, come home and download those pictures to a designated folder. Canon Files are .Raw and .Cr2 files. Will all this work? can anyone confirm?

Yes, but that might only apply to JPEG files. I don't know if RAW images are viewable right away. RAW+JPEG files are probably OK.

Yes, that will work fine. Like I said, though, there are better dedicated solutions. If you don't care about music or automatic synchronization, I'd be looking at a Smartdisk Flashtrax.

Well in my case, the music aspect is very appealing, but i don't care for imagine viewing. I do that at home when i archive my finds on DvDs.

I guess the Ipod is the way to go, especially for the price. 20Gig is plenty too.

There is no 20Gb iPod Photo. The current models are 30Gb and 60Gb. Be aware that the discontinued 40Gb and 60Gb versions come with a dock and Firewire & A/V cables that are now optional. The older models are still around at some retailers for close to the price of the new ones (I bought a 40Gb version from Buy.com). The Apple iPod Camera Connector is a separate $29 accessory.

Wait, are you saying a normal Ipod cannot have pictures uploaded to it? I don't want a viewer, just a 'storage' option. Be it playing music is a plus of course.

Correct. The Camera Connector only works with the iPod Photo. You can, of course, copy images to any iPod as an external hard drive, but linking directly to the camera requires the iPod Photo.

To Summarize this thread: (I checked the Apple support pages and updated my iPod Photo)

There are three separate products:

1) Belkin Camera Link: Works with all dock iPods to transfer and store files, using USB. You can NOT see photo’s in the field.

2) Belkin Media Reader: Works with all dock iPods to transfer and store files. On iPod Photo can view photos in the field.

3) Apple Camera Connector: Only works with iPod Photo, uses USB, can view photos in the field on the iPod.

If you have an iPod Photo, you can upgrade to the new software v1.1 which allows for the viewing of photos in the field and adds new transitions for the slide shows.

I have the Belkin Media Reader and it works well. My only issue is that it is a bit slow (20min for 500Mb) but is not a major problem as I can transfer the files while I’m driving home and I have extra CF cards. Once I sync the iPod with my Mac via FireWire it is very fast (about 1min for 500Mb).
