I tried a search of the forums first but just too many hits ....

I use PBase but have been having many people complain that they can not get on or it just hangs up, etc. Anyone else have that problem?

Can anyone recommend a photo site I can use that is reliable? Please, no Canon vs. Nikon wars, just an honest eval if you have used a site for six months or more. Thanks in advance for the discussion.

Welcome to the debacle that is Pbase these days. Yes, they have had severe problems that have been ongoing/recurring since at least November 2004. They finally decided not to charge anyone for, I think it was December and January, but they are still having problems off-and-on. They do not reapond to e-mails, and don't seem to be serious about correcting the problems.

Yeah, that is the other problem I noted. They are not very responsive to inquiries.

I've been on smugmug for over a year and have never had any problems. It is VERY user friendly and cheap to boot. I just have a standard account, but the pro accounts have awesome features for the money. Try it for free for 7 days amd see if you like it.

I hate to dump Pbase, and kill all the links to my stuff there, but it's looking more and more like I will have to do so. Everyone raves about Smugmug, and I have to say I've never had a slow load when someone links to their gallery there. Decisions, decisions...

I'm glad someone asked this question....because I've been wondering the which one would be better....I think my mind has been made up as well :)

Thanks to all who commented. I also hate to dump Pbase now after I have so many photos uploaded. But the down time complaints I get from friends and family who try and get on my site is getting more frequent. Looks like I will have to try Smugmug out and bite the bullet about reloading everything.

edit: thanks for the free trial link Laurie.

Well I'm now a Smugmug member :-)
I uploaded a couple galleries, and found i may need to downsize som eof my originals to meet hteir "large" image size criteria. The separate "pop-up" window for full-screen display of the larger "originals" is a bit irritating. I could get used to it, but not some folks that I might direct to my site. Prolly a good idea to limit the displayed size anyway.

Have not tried it as yet. Size of the image should not be a problem for me anyway as I tend to only upload smaller versions of my photos. I will join and upload a few galleries soon.

I'm also now a memeber (trial thanks to Laurie) and have uploaded a couple of galleries. Pretty easy process all in all. I only upload 640 x copies of my images so I just set it to original and all seesms to work fine. Only thing that bothered me is the seperate window for exif data. I have to agree with kirbic that seperate windows is a bit of an issue.

We'll see how it works out and if anyone has trouble getting on like they do at my PBase site. I sent out an e-mail to a number of people tonight to check it out. If anyone here has trouble with it please let me know.

edit: whoops, the link

Anyone who hasn't visited JB's gallery is really missing something special. He has some of the nicest wild bird photos I've ever seen. Beautifully crisp, clean, and ... I don't know exactly ... uplifting. Highly recommended!

I'm a smugmug user too, May makes 1 year.

Galleries here

I use their cobranding, so that my visitors just see photo.lynnesite.com.

I've had a smugmug professional account for a while now, and I highly reccommend them. You can visit my site at micknewton.smugmug.com

I recently created a DPChallenge Photo Community on smugmug. Please join it if\when you have a smugmug account. Just go to DPChallenge SmugMug Community and click the "join" button. Then, if you want to, you can share any of your own galleries.

You should also create an account on DigitalGrin.com. There's lots of cool stuff there, like tech support for your smugmug account, message boards, and even have photo contests with prizes.

If you do signup, you can save money by entering my personal coupon qzDagz7w1S78w in the 'Referred by' field on the signup form.

More importantly, it also saves me money. :)

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Flickr yet. It has a great interface and set of tools. It's free to try. And it has a great open API - even if you aren't a programmer you should still care about this, since it lets the people who are programmers create really cool things, such as the 50 people see project

How much money do I save? Or do you get commission? I don't mind getting you commission.

I don't think there's any limit on the size of the photos that you upload. You can upload photos of any size, then the viewers can view them at small, medium, or large. They can also view them at the original size if you allow that, but, for obvious reasons, I suggest you don't allow viewing the originals. For example, if I upload a 3072x2048 photo, it can be viewed small (400x267), medium (600x400), or large (800x533). If I allow the original to be viewed, then it opens a new window to display the image. This is because originals are usually much larger than the screen.

You save $5 and I save $10. Not a huge amount, but still better than a kick in the nu... well, you know. :)
