Congratulations Andrew Ungvarsky!

The first challenge is now over. The results are posted on the homepage as well as the challenge results page.

Some ill feelings have surfaced over whether or not winners should be decided on Total Score or Average Vote. A perfect example is between 2nd and 3rd place. 2nd place scored higher, but had a less average vote. This is a result of users not finishing voting. However. Some users may choose not to vote on images to give them no-vote, or a zero vote. What do you guys feel is the right way?

Scoring Average. Total Score makes the issue of some people not voting even more apparent.

Congrats to Drew.

i agree. need to do scoring average. if the scale is from 1 to 10 and a person chooses not to vote that makes his vote a 0 which breaks the 1 to 10 scale. winners should be decided by the average which is more accurate representation of the will of the voters.

i hope it is not someone's laziness that is keeping this new type of scoring from being implemented.

After careful deliberation, we've come to the conclusion that Average Vote is the deciding factor when caclulating the winners.

The winners have been changed for archiving purposes. We're sorry if this offends anyone.

Thoughts and comments are still welcome.

The other admins and I have all talked about this for a good half an hour, and we've come to the decision that average vote must be the number that decides winners. We had several factors weighing on both sides, but average vote is the most fair way to ensure accurate voting.

The biggest issue is people not voting on all submissions. In the case of someone getting lazy or bored and not finishing voting (gasp), calculating winner by total score instead of average would be unfair.

A related problem is people only voting for 1 or 2 photographs -- perhaps friends, or perhaps themselves. We now have means in place to monitor suspected vote-swaying ... either by giving extremely low votes or no votes at all. People found doing this will be warned once, and their votes will be discarded for that challenge. A second offense will result in a loss of account and ban from the site.

It's only fair to photographers that we implement these new features. Thanks for your understanding, and PLEASE give us your comments on this!

I think maybe that you should be a tad bit more informative in the rules for voting. It doesn't state that low votes, or no votes, would be a no-no. What happens if we don't think the photograph rules were followed, or we don't necessarily think that it fit the challenge? I would hate to get booted from this site for something that was not understood or not intentionally done.

I don't think there was anything in the rules stating that you couldn't vote on your own photograph either. I realize we are all trying to be professional judges, but must admit, we are all human and by human nature, will more than likely give our own a higher number.

I would much rather not be able to vote on my own photograph. A judgement of my peers is more than sufficient.

We are working on getting an interface together to disqualify photographs. If you feel, for any reason, that a photograph should be disqualified, then you will be able to voice your opinion. We will update the Rules section of the website once we have completed our work.

For now, I suggest you gives these photos that you feel do not belong in the challenge low scores (1). Being that we've phased out voting on your own photograph, swaying votes is less a problem now. For monitoring, we will likely be looking for all VERY low scores, and one VERY high score.

Being that users typically give themselves high scores (10), we've disabled this option. We're trying to get a highly accurate average at the end of the challenge to give users a true feeling of how good their photograph truly is. However I did generate a list of self-votes before removing them all, and I found that some people actually gave themselves scores as low as 7 -- pretty interesting actually.

Again, the rules will be updated soon, I promise.

Well, I for one have to apologize. I didn't think it out before I threw a 10 on my photograph. Afterwards, when I went back to change it and found out I couldn't, I felt pretty bad. Glad to hear that it won't be counted. I plan on taking this whole thing alot more seriously.

I am also glad the self vote has been thrown out. Even though I gave myself a 10 before having it thrown out, I did not feel that it was the best entry. It is definately human nature to give yourself a high score and also a form of strategy when you know that others will be doing the same thing. Strangely enough, my average score has actually gone up since my vote was thrown out.

Thanks for working to make a good site even better.

Wait, is this archival proof that Eight Ball - Corner Pocket, one if the site's most enduring, favourite, highest ever scoring images, was part of a vote rigging, nepotistic scam!!!

Maybe site council can look into a DQ :)

I just had an all-too-vivid image of him trying to keep his hands off the balls in the pocket, and sprayed coffee on my monitor.

I heard that he missed the pot anyway ... so the ban is well in order.
