in my 3 year old rig I built...

1700 Athlon xp (1.4ghz) underclocked to 1.1ghz (to prevent overheating)
geforce 4, 128mb version
STAudio pro soundcard
SBlive! soundcard
386mb ram... oldschool pc133 (no not the DDR kind)
2 x 80 gig 7200rpm 8mb cashe HDs
built in... sound... card...

monitor is a nec 15inch lcd, the high end one of the time
headphones - Grado sr 225's *drool*
altec lansing speakers... 80 watt system.
All very upgradable with the current motherboard... for not very much money... if I had money!

I highly recommend Zalman CPU fans. An excellent investment of ~$30. No problems with overheating and no need to underclock... I use them on athlon 64 boxes.

Microcenter has them, and i would imagine, any reputable online store.

I bought a good fan which is on it... and I have 2 other 80mm case fans which I put in as mods... The chip didn't do it originally, it's just that it's slowly dying... it still locks up at 1.1ghz on occasion.

Whatever I could scrounge up at the time...
AMD Athlon 2200+ w/500MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000,
120GB WD & 80GB Maxtor HD's, Sony Combo CD/CD-RW/DVD ROM,
On-Board LAN & SOund, 1 extra LAN card for network.

Just basic - works fine.
