Just a couple quick reminders for everyone:

Report Post: As we hoped, problems in the forums have decreased dramatically since the Report Post feature was introduced, to the point where problem posts are now very few and far between. Probably as a result of that, it seems people have forgotten the button is there, and take the poster to task for it instead of reporting it.

Should you see a post that needs Site Council attention, please make use of the report post feature. Examples might include TOS violations, personal attacks, accidental double-posts (yours or someone else's), discussion of challenge entries where voting is not yet complete, large images (over 30K or over 500 pixels wide) posted directly in a message, or nudity or other "not work-safe" content posted without a warning.

In most cases it is best to report the post and move on -- rather than diverting the thread by replying to the poster that their post violates the rules. Site Council will handle that. The most likely exception is a post in which someone reveals their challenge entry; in that case you may want to encourage them to remove it in addition to reporting it to Site Council.

Disqualification Requests: Whenever you see an entry you feel might violate the challenge rules, please request disqualification for that entry, and state your reason clearly in the space provided. This sends a message to Site Council that a user feels that entry needs a closer look. We will look at your request, the entry and any notes provided by the photographer at submission time, and decide if additional action is needed.

Please note, the photographer will not be inconvenienced in any way unless Site Council feels their is legitimate cause to request proof on the entry. Also note that as a photographer, the notes you include with your submission help us to determine whether proof is needed -- filling them out just may make your life easier during the challenge!

Voting - NEVER VOTE AN ENTRY LOWER JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL IT WAS CREATED ILLEGALLY. Instead, request DQ on the image, and give the entry the same score that you would give if "This photo has been validated" appeared beneath it. To ensure fairness, DPC voting must be done under an "innocent until proven guilty" system, otherwise photographers are penalized for coming up with innovative-but-legal ways to create an entry. As a community of artists, our goal should be to encourage innovation as much as possible.

oops. I never realized it was illegal to post nudes in the forums. I think i've violated that one a few times.

Thanks for the reminders, Terry!

It's not illegal at all; however you should do one or both of the following:

- Include "Nudity warning" or "Not work-safe" (or something similar) in the subject line
- Post the photograph as a link, rather than a thumbnail or full-size image, and include "Nudity warning" or "Not work-safe" (or something similar) in the message, as near to the link as possible.

Basically, nudity is fine, so long as people realize they are going to see it before they do.

It's not illegal to post nudes in the forums.. you just have to put a "contains nudity" warning in the thread title is all.

*edit* Dang, Club is quick.

So do I, but some people browse the site from work, and some supervise their children's use of the site. This guideline helps those people use the site without unnecessary problems.

Just an additional reminder to CJ's post: Per the challenge rules, not meeting the challenge is NOT grounds for disqualification.

Excellent point... I can't believe i forgot to include that!

Not meeting the challenge should be considered in your score.

Is a request to DQ for violation of TOS handled in the same way as a editing DQ request?

Yes, though in many cases the original is not needed to reach a decision.

And don't forget folks, there's the The DQ Process: A Voter's Guide, which goes into much more detail about how the DQ system works, along with good (and bad) reasons for raising a DQ request.

Okay, at the risk of asking stupid questions ... what does TOS mean? Also, what's "bumping." I tried finding out on my own but gave up.

TOS = Terms of Service

Bumping means posting in a thread to move it to the top of the recent threads list.

Terry [has] posted some great reminders here about voting and disqualification.

Here's another reminder: the tutorial section has lots of helpful articles on a variety of subjects, from duotoning to resizing to how to use the forums codes, etc. They are especially helpful if you are new to DPC or new to digital photography/editing. Make sure you check them out before you ask questions in the forums as lots of the tutorials address questions that are frequently asked.

In addition, many of the forum sections have "sticky threads" - threads with the little yellow icon next to them that stay at the top of the section. Those also contain helpful information; check them out, too!

The How'd They Do That? section has detailed descriptions about how photographers created individual photos. Interesting reading and great help if you're looking to try something new.

Many thanks to all of the contributers in these sections. It's great to have a wealth of documented information for other users to check out. Make sure you take a look if you haven't already!

Well, almost.

this FAQ might be helpful, if you're interested in entering challenges. the challenges are typically related to a specific topic, so you probably wouldn't want to enter a flower in a 'reptile' challenge (the scoring can be pretty harsh for images that are not considered to be 'on topic'). good luck!
