In an old thread we decided on:
March 12th
Antelope Valley Poppy Fields

For those of you South of Hollywood/Glendale, we could meet at my apartment (I live 1 mile from the 5), and we could carpool or convoy. We should leave VERY early in my opinion. Do you all want to catch sunrise (when they open) or should we just arrive there around 8am? Please post opinions here!

For those who want to meet there, we WILL meet at the Visitor's Center. See map: //www.parks.ca.gov/lat_long_map/default.asp?lvl_id=266 Does anyone know exactly how to get to the visitor's center? If so, could you post clear directions HERE from the 5 freeway?

Exerpt:
Antelope Valley - February 10, 2005
Milt Stark writes: In Antelope Valley, we have a strange situation in that scattered poppies began to bloom in January. Right now many poppies are blooming in Quartz Hill in front of houses and in vacant lots. The Poppy Reserve received 16 inches of rain so far which is about twice normal. Many poppy plants have formed but the alien grasses and filaree are lush and have provided strong competition for the poppies.

Don't know what to tell ya.. we must first make it to hollywood first :). so whats going to be the final decision for the valley?

As far as location I dont think the MTA goes that far out :) so I'll be meeting for the carpool. I'd like to catch the different stages of them blooming but whatever the group decides i'm fine with it.

How long do you think it will take to get there and back? I prefer not to do a whole day thing. Half day thing is good with me.

Well, I think we are going to leave by 8:00am, get there around 9:00am, spend a few hours there, then have lunch and come home. So, we'd be back by 2pm I think. Not sure though. You may want to drive up with us and go home whenever you want. I would like to carpool and play it by ear, giving myself the day if I find other cool things in the area to go photograph.

Who's going on this trip? Please post here so I can make a list!

sfalice I plan on making the trip as well, I have relatives that live in Lancaster(antelope valley) and I go down south at least once a month. Maybe we could meet up in livermore and follow each other down if your going to be taking the I5 down to the La basin. Pm me if this sounds like a good idea.

If you still need directions:

Take the 5 north to the 14 north. In Lancaster, exit Avenue I and take a left. Go west about 15 miles on Ave I, you know you're close when the road curves to the right. The visitor center is about 3 miles past the curve on the right, up on the side of a small hill. You can't miss it.

Telehubbie, are you joining us?
DDYJR, you are doing well keeping the bay area on the boards!!! Keep it up! It's great to see our beautiful state of California gathering some wonderful photographers to help capture the beauty of our home! We have to compete with the magnificent landscape of Iceland, ya know! I think we'll give them a run for the money!

So, see you all at the visitor's center at 9am (or close to it) if you are meeting me there. If any of you want to carpool from Glendale (5 & 134 freeways), PM me to get my address. We'll leave at 8am.

I'll see you at your place to carpool. What's the widest lens among all of us 18-55mm? I was thinking about getting the Tokina 12-24 but they are back ordered and doubt can get it till about Spring/Summer. It's about $499, the 11-18mm from Tamron is taking orders for $569 for anyone that's interested as well.

18mm to 35mm is my widest (kit lens with 20D). I wish I could afford another lens, but for now, I'll just admire your work! :)
03/02/2005 02:04:14 AM · #24
they both sound like some nice lenses, but i'm not to familiar with Tokina might have to read up on those.

since we're on the subject, i was going to post this in the hardware but i figured not to.

as far as the mid-range lenses go which would be a good choice?

Tokina AT-X 242 AF 24-200MM f/3.5-5.6 SD for Nikon (72) or
Sigma AF 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 Compact Hyper Zoom ASP-IF Aspherical Lens
They price is $100 split with the Tokina $299 and Sigma $199 or should i wait for the Tamron AF18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD ASPHERICAL (IF) MACRO? $399

I know so little about lenses that I am unable to offer advice here. Tom may know though! I personally want a 1.4 or 1.8 f-stop next... that's most important to me right now. I am not sure what is most important to you, but all of those lenses sound really nice :)
