Hey all,
I am trying desperately to save to buy a canon eos 300d. They are very expensive in Oz (around $1999). That will take me 3 yrs to save for!
My question how safe do you think it is to buy from an overseas retailer. I have been looking on ebay and have found some great deals but worry about warranty, whether i will get the camera in one piece etc...
Just wondering if anyone has bought from overseas and what were your experiences.
Thanks in advance

If you wait Canon is supposed to announce the new version of that camera on Monday. The 300D will drop in price shortly after.

Not sure about OZ, but most imports would be subject to tax. I got a decent UK deal on my 300D but have bought lenses from several foreign places. If you look hard you can find people offering Worldwide warranties. IMHO buying abroad is much like buying at home from a company you don't know and its harder to knock on their door if things go wrong.

I would be carefull when purchasing on EBay from overseas.

I have purchased lenses from online shops in the US and found the price and service excellent even when you add GST and import duty which you will have to pay when it lands they are still cheaper then Oz retailers.

But as mentioned before the price is going down for the 300D just this weekend Harvey Norman had them with kit lense for $1499.00.

Good luck

I have bought two cameras overseas although one was second hand (from someone on this site) and you should have no issues with warranty. Cannon is an international company and should honour the warranty. After all the warranty is with them and not the store you buy it from, but do keep your receipts as you would normally do.

The camera package you would buy here or in the States will have the same warranty cards in it anyway.

If you have any questions perhaps call Cannons local offices and ask them.

You can not link to items on your computer.

You need to link to a page that is online, not one that is saved on your computer.

Do you mean pay import duties on items you bought overseas or on items you buy on the shelf? I was just confused thinking that you don't have to pay money when you import stuff :p

The EOS 300D 18-55 Kit now retails at $1599.00 AUD. Harvey Norman Rockhampton QLD has them for $1499 (if you ring and ask for me! :D

The price is drop is attributed to the new EOS 350D that will be announced and released in the coming months.

Hi Lisa

I bought a speedlite 420 ex flash from these guys in HK. They marked the package as 'gift' so I didn't get stung for tax. The package arrived within 3 days and the item was brand new for AUD209 (extra 65 for postage) - they are over AUD400 RRP here.

They come with 2 year warranty, don't know how good they are at handling warranty claims but from what I've seen of their service I'd have no qualms with it.

Check out their 300D deal. Comes with 18-55mm lens, case & tripod for AUD1,160.

I don't know how it works for those in Oz, but a lot of the "deals" on e-bay are so-called "gray market" cameras that were manufactured for the Asian marketplace. They are not covered by the manufacturer's USA warranty, which is limited to cameras "legally" imported into the USA. I ran afoul of this, unknowingly, with Nikon. I was one of the first 5700 purchasers, right after it came on the market, and they will not accept my warranty registration, nor will they download drivers etc from their online site because when I type in the serial number they come back and tell me this is not a "USA" camera and I am not allowed access. Buncha BS if you ask me.

Oh yeah, the manual was a xeroxed copy too; they said the original manual with that serial number cam was in Japanese. And this was from a USA-based internet store. I've never got much further into it, the cam has never needed service, and the warranty would have expired by now, but...

i'll admit that is does worry me buying online. I think i would rather go into a store and pick it up myself. I am just keen to take some photos again. (my nikon is acting up)
I guess i was just trying to reach for the answer i wanted but when common sense kicks in it overrides it all. I will just have to wait. Arrghh!!! booohooo. :o(

The duty is paid on imported goods and a bill of sale is required for customs where if it is over $1000 (i think) you will be required to pay the duty.

But like I mentioned earlier it still works out cheaper. The last goods I brought from the States were a set of golf clubs which worked out $500
cheaper then I could find in Oz and it was on my doorstep in 4 days.
