Thinking about buying a Canon 70-200mm f/4L in a few weeks. I just wanted to know if the Tripod collar is necessary for this lens? Can the Canon 20D support this lens while mounted on a tripod. My tripod is rated to support 13.3lbs.

First of all its an excellent lens, spends 80% of the time on my camera.
Its pretty light specially compared to other versions.
I have had it on a cheapo tripod with no problems, but its also very hand-holdable.
Dunno if that helps but I dont think you need the collar..
My 2 cents

Thanks for the reply. If the colar wasn't so expensive, I wouldn't be asking. I just don't want to drop $130 if it's not necessary.

I have this lens and you dont need the collar. Its a great great lense. I will be trading it in for the f2 version soon. I need the extra stop of light for weddings. If you dont need the extra stop for light then dont spend the extra money theres quit a difference in price. Again i love this lens. Kevin

Any of you guys have any images that you can post. I'd like to see what this lens can do. Thanks!!

Not great to post 640x427 shots to make any lens claims, but this gives a general idea even at these sizes. Resized in PhotoShop CS using bicubic interpolation, no sharpening, no contrast adjustment, straight out of the camera. The landscape shot was shot in RAW so there was a contrast adjustment in that conversion, as well as a saturation bump. It wasn't sharpened at all. All ISO 100, first at 200mm and f/4, second at 70mm and f/4, third at 75mm and f/11.

Some people have had focus problems with it on the 10D, but I haven't.

Am saving hard for the 1.4 converter for this lens, if it has a fault its that sometimes it can be too sharp! You won't be sorry when you get it!

This is one of my first pictures, I thought it was an ok shot but is now my second highest fav choice (ok, 4 isn't a lot)

Too Sharp?? Bah!! That's what PS filters are for...lol

How much of a difference will the 1.4x Teleconverter make? Range wise??

erm, 70-200 becomes 98-280 or 35mm equiv on your 20D 157-448 oh, and you lose a full stop but keep autofocus.

Canon 70-200 F 4.0 is an excellent lens. I have it and I love it, it gives very nice color and is very sharp. A tripod ring would be a plus, but I don’t have any problem when I use it on my 20D attached to a tripod.
