It's great - thanks for the effort.

Certainly it's worth taking the time to teach myself how to dodge and burn properly, and with the help of that tutorial, I might just suceed (eventually!).

I find on color phot's that if I have to burn a bit more then I would likie I can use the Sponge tool to get some of the color back. DO you do this as well?

Brad - That's an amazing transformation, I like it. How long did it take to do something of this effect ?

It's a lovely tutorial, Pedro, very well done. However it covers only one side of the spectrum; how to take an overly flat image and add drama to it by brightening highlights and darkening shadows selectively. The other side, of course, dodges the shadows and burns the highlights to control overly contrasty areas in an image which otherwise has a decent tonal range.

It might, therefore, better be titled more specifically; "Dra,atic Enhancement Through Burning and Dodging in Photoshop", something liek that...

Good work.

@ Puma: Yes I do use the sponge tool, tho it's generally to DEsaturate when using the D/B tools oversaturates the colours. it often helps to only use it on certain channels as well; reds tend to get overdone a bit, so desaturating the red channel clears that up without messing with the others.

@ Robt: yes and no; my goal was not necessarily to suggest that D/B tools are only to add drama. In fact I tend not to use it for that purpose much at all. For me it's mostly a way to make subtle contrast transformations and add sharpness to an image. Although looking back (I actually wrote this 2 months ago) you're absolutely right I did only focus on the additive values of the tools, and neglected the other side. Truth is I'm not sure I've ever used them that way, but that's absolutely a function of my personal preference for contrasty images :)

and no, I'm not certain that contrasty is even a word, but since it's a really useful Pedroism I'm not going to check.

"Contrasty" is a perfectly good word, Pedro.

Whoa! I missed this posting, and so have only just seen the tutorial. Most kind indeed to mention my photo, especially with the uncalled-for compliment ;-)

Good, and useful work, P

Thank you for this clear, instructive and entertaining tutorial, Pedro. Some great guidance on technique, and also helped me to better understand the role of the "controls" (Range, exposure, etc). The most useful tutorial I've read. Cheers.

Opinions on this "dodge and burn" like shot? I did it using a different technique, the render lighting effects instead. Anyone play with this filter to good effect? What do you think of this one:

This was done while playing with some ideas for Yellow, but not legal for a yellow entry:

I call it "Dodge and Burn in the Gates of Yell: ;)

I have never used these tools in PS. Did not know what I was missing. Thank you Pedro for sharing this enlightening tutorial.
