So how about a gathering and an outing to some scenic place, perhaps relatively unknown, where we can hang out, hike around, trade tips and stories, and take pictures?

Any sort of Bay Area location would work, I think, but my suggestion would probably be a park. Castle Rock on Highway 9 is rather far south, but is very pretty and has a number of easy hiking trails. Big Basin is another southerly, but beautiful location. Suggestions for the East Bay or the Peninsula would be great, too, but I'm not familiar with that area. I'm in San Jose.

Takers?

When the weather warms up I'm planning to go up on Mt. Diablo. It would be cool to visit Mt. Hamilton again too.

Never been to either of those places. A brief look at the Mt. Hamilton page makes it clear why one might want to go there. Perhaps if more people jump on this thread, we could get some kind of ball rolling toward a group outing..!

Im up for the trip. I live in Brentwood and have been trying to hook up with the La folks but my job has been keeping me in the Bay Area. Pm me with info and I'll continue to watch this thread. SF is always cool to photograph after midnight. I just returned from doing some night shooting up there. I got some really cool shots of the Golden Gate Bridge at night using my Canon 70mm-200mm. The city takes on a whole new dimension after Midnight.

Cool. No PM for now since there's no info to dole out- I don't know how I might get bay area folks' attention other than this or just PMing a bunch of them, and not wanting to be such a direct heckler, I'll stick to this for now. Any pertinent information is what we come up with here... perhaps something we could choose is a date.

Last weekend in February? First in March? those are the first that come to mind for me.

This is a fine way to stay in touch -- make this thread a "watched" thread and return to it/bump it periodically when there's news. I know there's a couple of folks in SF who've already been on one or two outings around here. My schedule will be freer when school's out.

I will be in the Bay Area at least twice this Spring/Summer, once on April 6-8, and again July 12-16. I mat be there a third time, don't know yet. I'd love to get out with Bay Area DPCers during one or more of my visits.

I am in Santa Clara and would like any such get together. But, I am out of the country from Feb19th to March7th, so any plans after that would be the best suited.

This sounds like fun. Spring is pretty darn beautiful around here. The wildflowers should be out and everything is still nice 'n green. Another couple of suggestions would be an easy trip to Mt. Tamalpais close to San Francisco in Marin County with lots of easy hiking/walking around the summit and fabulous city views (if there's no fog). Another suggestion, although probably a bit far for the San Jose contingent is Pt. Reyes National Seashore.

I've been to Mt. Hamilton only once, and it is spectacular with its various observatories and 360 view. Seems to me they sometimes let visitors inside the main observatory and give a brief lecture. It's a nice exciting drive to get there too.

Dates. Someone mentioned the last weekend in February or the 1st weekend in March. That last Feb. weekend, John Shaw is in town giving a weekend seminar at Berkeley, so that's out. But March 5-6 would work for me. Or else April 2-3.

I live relatively close to Mt. Hamilton as the crow flies (in East San Jose), but it still takes over an hour to get up there. It is well worth it, though...

The only problem is that they don't like visitors up there after 5pm (because of the car lights). That makes it hard to take summer evening pictures of Santa Clara Valley from up there unless you are lucky enough to win the lottery for their Summer Visitors Program. It could perhaps be worthwhile to try to get into that, and try to get there a bit early to take photos.

I'm in SF with a pretty free schedual...

MT Tam is pretty nice this time of year (north of SF), MT Diablo would be cool. The industrial areas of SF are really fun to poke around in (got in trouble with trespassing once though...oops)

Well, let's narrow it down to a date:
Saturday OR Sunday
March 5 or 6
April 2 or 3

Or alternate?

Then, a site:
Mt. Hamilton
Mt. Diablo
Mt. Tamalpias

Or alternate?

In Sf here as well, a group outing sounds like fun :)

Wish I knew some cool industrial areas of SF to poke around in that are not scary!

Been to Mt Diablo and Tamalpais like both those alot.. Never been to Hamilton.

I might suggest Saturday, March 5, leaving open the possibility for a second outing the following month if we so choose. Given what joro said about Mt. Hamilton, that might not be the best choice for purely practical reasons. I've never been to Mt. Tam, but it is pretty far north, and would require a lot of driving for anyone coming from the South Bay.

Mt. Diablo seems good, as it's not too far north or south, and is as far as I know fairly accessible. There's also the possibility, which appeals to me, of going to a park and for a short hike--e.g., Castle Rock or Big Basin, though those are probably lengthy drives for anyone (especially the latter) - but Big Basin is a beautiful place full of old-growth redwoods and, I think, worth the drive, especially if you've never been there before.

So: Saturday, March 5: who's free? Destination to be determined.

I like the idea of a spring flower trip or an after midnight trip, but tough to do both. There are some nice flowers in some of the draws behind Clayton on Mt Diablo.

I haven't run into any industrial areas I would call scary. Have you tried exploring the dock areas between the China Basin Channel and Islais Creek Channel? If you're not familiar with the area, the major street is 3rd. Just pick any street heading toward the bay and start exploring. Lots of great buildings down there.

Cool, thanks Tech. I have to check it out.. know some ppl not too far from there, I'll have to ask them to take me for a roundtrip :)

The industrial areas I've been to around here so far does not seem to be safe for solo females to explore.

Just want to bring this thread to life again to see if Bay Area people are still interested in a get together on March 5. Last I heard, Mt. Diablo was a likely destination. Either the base, in the canyons around Clayton (suggested by BrennanOB) or the summit. Also, Rock City (between the summit and Danville) would be an interesting secondary destination.

If BrennanOB is watching this thread, how are the wildflowers doing in the canyons? Out yet?

I'll be glad to take a couple of passengers if the day is still on.

I would like to join you on March 5th. I would be open to any alternate dates as well especially if anyone gets a good idea for a current challenge. A good friend that is a DPC member has to work Saturdays which make Sunday or Monday the only good time for us to consider. The next few months become one of my favorite times to go to the coast... and for those of you that may enjoy motorsports Infineon Raceway has always the potential for exciting shots. I have a very flexible schedule and if any locals or out of towners would like to get together spontaneously that would work for me too. Just PM me and I'll get back to you right away.
