Is anyone else finding voting in the Pain challenge a little painful?
02/09/2005 12:17:03 AM · #2
I can't imagine why it wouldn't be.. we *were* supposed to capture emotional pain after all .. (or any other kind of pain for the open-minded).

I already got a comment saying my shot was depressing, and thus a 5.

Ummm.. it's a pain challenge.. I'm sorry I didn't photograph Happy Sheep in Candy Land for you :)

Hey Art, be glad you got a 5. I am on my way to my lowest score ever, possibly the brown ribbon. I do need one though. It is the only color I don't have now.

I don't think I can wade through the pain. I think I will skip the voting on this one.

You are only hurting yourself by not voting!

Hehe.. I've got a "fairly decent" 4.75 right now.. but honestly, I expect people on this website just weren't ready for a challenge like this.. as evidenced by some of the entries.. and by the comments I've recieved so far. Damned if you do, damned if you don't :)

I decided as soon as the challenge was announced that I would not be participating or voting or commenting in/on this challenge. I'm sure that there will be too many shots that I just plain don't wanna see. Nothing personal against anyone who entered, just not my cup o' tea...

Edited to add: Admins, is there any possibility of blocking a challenge that one finds to be personally distastefull from his/her home page? I don't believe in censorship except by the person him/herself...

There are some very moving shots and some pretty gross ones to. It will be interesting to see what happens. I'm doing poorly also:)

I'm staring at a horrendous 4.88. Ordinarily, a score that low would make me very upset, but I knew it was coming and submitted anyway. It's an interesting departure for me, and I can smile knowing that the photo and score both worked exactly as I predicted. I'm waiting to see who comments about the technique. ;-)

I don't ususally enter into these posts, but I have to say that I was disappointed on a whole other level. I can "take" the pain, but most of these images for me don't even begin to artisically emote pain - physical or mental or spiritual. I am saddened by the lack of pain in a way. It is too cartoonish for me. I don't mean to disrespect anyone's efforts here - you all entered and participated and that is wonderful. I just couldn't do any good voting on this.

Well, I can guarantee that my shot isn't lacking pain.. especially emotionally.. I think my problem is that it has a little too *much*

I would love to have some comments. This is a bit painful, but so far it's better than my first two. Could I be improving?

Youch. I'm looking at a current 3.9 with 16 votes. I'd gone on the advice of several friends to make it look a bit staged, just so that people wouldn't mark down for gore. I guess it looked a little too staged, either that or a little too weird in general. I'm a pure beginner and was quite proud of the shot pre-submission, but that's kinda tailspinning now. -pouts and experiences pain- Oh well, better luck next time...I live near some interesting bridges.

After taking a cursory view of some of the photos I have decided not to vote in this challenge. There seems to be as much mutilation as pain and far too few photos that tried to capture the emotion of pain. I did not enter this one but wish all that did the best of luck.

You said it much better than I did.

As for there not being enough 'emotional pain' and too much 'physical pain,' the challenge said to capture the emotion Pain, not emotionally based pain, per se. Physical pain can often bring on the emotion of pain (unless you're a masochist or something), without necisarily being emotion-based. In short, physical triggers can result in emotions. Therefore, in my opinion, phyicical pain is valid if the emotional aspect is tied in (which can be done through use of facial expression, posture as a rection to pain, etc.)

I'm voting down every image that created 'fake pain'. Just forcing your model to make a nasty face, or pouring some liquid that looks like blood does not appeal to me at all. This challenge will have the maximum number of 2s I've ever given, for completely unimaginative thinking. (actually, I rarely vote anything but 100x100 images less than a 4, so this is a first for me)

The ones I've liked either capture real emotion (defeat or loss) or had a creative interpretation to the challenge.

LOL, I didn't realize it was a candid pain challenge.
