That's what happens to blue ribbon winning pictures. People want to look at them. My lone blue ribbon winning picture has over 4000 views, and the number keeps rising every day. And it also does not contain the things you mentioned.

They are not really random, unsolicited views in a sense. People are always looking at the challenge archives, and checking out the winning pictures. That's all it is. All the blues have thousands of views.

I'm not so sure about that. All it takes is someone to directly link an image on another site, and it'll get indirect hits. If something starts to get a very large number of views disproportionately or unsuspectingly, I'd wonder if this wasn't being used elsewhere.

Lightning shots are always attractive, and I wouldn't say that 5K hits is anything surprising at all.

That could happen to some pictures, but most likely it is because it is a blue winner, and people want to see it. Every blue has thousands of views. If a random picture from someone's portfolio started getting disproportionatly or unsuspecting hits, than that could be the case. But for the blue ribbon pictures, which is what BikeRacer's picture is, my guess is that people are checking it out from the challenge archives.

Curiously, my red has nearly 7000 views from only Sept. 2004.
If you go to Photos->Browse by number of views it appears on the first page

hehe I hope this thread boosts the number of views..

Mark of SRQ: I guess I just liked the fact that it's got a lot of views w/o all the usual "grabbers" that get people to look at more than just the thumbnail.

Jimmythefish: I don't know - is there anyway to tell if image views are direct linked from other sites?

e301: i guess i was thinking that it was so far buried in time that it was unusual for people to see it on the site - it's not like it's on the front page anymore.

eojedaa: that is a cool shot!

And you can browse least viewed photos ... so I challenge everyone to browse them and have a look (and comment) on at least five of them today that have received 0 views so far..

Explain this...

It finished 40 out of 76 total images with a score of 5.1. It is nobody's favorite and got just 13 comments. I have only two images that have been viewed more and both of them are ribbon winners.

Yet this image has had 1135 views.
(I'm guessing the image title somehow attracts attention)

Well, one reason may be that it's been up for almost 2 years, so it's had time to accumulate views. Also, your profile has been viewed over 7000 times, and a lot of those people may have looked at your portfolio. Was it posted in any forums previously? That could also be a reason. Another reason may be that that particular challenge had very little entries, so when people looked at the results of that challenge, they were able to look at more of the pictures. Add all those reasons up and you have 1135 views.

I could be totally wrong too, it might be what Riggs said, "Because everyone love pie!"

Images with a lot of red will typically draw more "hits" in many situations, it's a known fact. Not DPC-related, haven't checked it here.

Hmmmmm... not so...
It has had more views than any other image in it's challenge except the three ribbon winners. So both time and the small number of entries cannot explain it. It hasn't been posted in forums to attract attention. There are other red pies and they don't have as many views so color and loving pie is not the reason. My profile has been viewed less than both Jacko and Konador who's images in the same challenge finished in the top 10 and they have been viewed less. So that ain't it either.

It is an official mystery.

Something about the red backround makes me want to click on it to see it better - the wrinkles and shadows didn't render well in the thumbnail.
