I feel that the white background of the thumbnail and picture viewer pages
is the worst possible color choice. Because of the high constrast it creates,
it makes the pictures loose all detail in the dark/shadow areas. As far as
I'm concerned, any picture looks better on a black background, so I would
really like that to change. Do others have an optinion about that?

If it's going to be changed, I'd vote for neutral grey, black would have same probs as white for some photos.
But I think white is easiest and cleanest (in terms of site design).
I also think it's fairer to judge photos on the full size version and not using the thumbnail.

I have wondered about this myself, and ideally we would all be able to choose our own background color for the photos.
But, that would be a perfect world.
I agree that a black background looks good more often than not, but white is not that bad.

Well, black background doesn't make you loose detail in white areas. The eye can adjust a lot better that way. Just as an
example: my picture in the pencil challenge has a lot of dark background.
However, on the website with its white background, it's impossible to see
that there is important detail there, it just looks flat. And viewing the "fullsize" doesn't
change that as long as fullsize is not the bigger part of the screen.
I'm yet to see a picture that benefits from white background...

My pencil entry was created with a white background in mind and in my
opinion looks better on white than on black.
I've got a load of snow & ice type pictures that just don't work so
well on a black background in my pbase account.
The best option would be selectable between black/ white & 18% grey.
Black tends to enclose/ encroach on a picture while a white background
is more 'open'.

Agreed, as long as the photographer gets to choose the background, not the viewer.

I think that the white background is the most neutral in the sense that that's what the brain encounter in the everyday life with paper. So I think it 'eliminate' it more easily. But .. that's just a thought
