After a long consultative process the date of the GTG was set for Saturday 5th March 2005.

This is a new thread to pull together the details.

<<<***MEETING PLACE***>>>

12.00 at Brown's restaurant on St Martin's Lane (tube stop = Leicester Square) under name of "Kavita". Non-smoking table for 22 booked. Smokers can smoke in the bar area. £10.95 menu gives choice of starter and main or main and dessert or a la carte for full selection. Meeting in bar area to sit down for 12.30. Will ask everyone to order and pay for drinks in the bar so food bill is same for everyone and easy to divvy up.

Map at their website, here
Kavey's additional instructions: Come out of Leicester Square tube station following signs to Covent Garden. Progress down Long Acre street maybe about 25-50 yards and you'll see a Pret a Manger store on the south side of the road. It's on a corner so it's kind of pie slice shaped. Go around that corner so you're making almost a U-turn and you'll be on St Martin's Lane. Continue down st martin's (back to the west) for 20 yards and you're at Brown's.

.
.
If your name isn't on the list and you want to come, please let me know - this an utterly open DPC GTG event!

What to do?
Since quite a few of us will be on limited budgets it would be good to come up with plans for the day that don't involve lots of expensive fees. I liked the idea of river buses though I noticed from Transport For London's website that one of the key water docks (or whatever they call the river bus station) is closed on the 5th March.

What other ideas do people have about an area to wander around?

Thanks
Kavey

.
Monday Night
Skiprow (who's staying at my place that night) and Chiqui are going to be joining Pete and I for dinner up where we live, in North Finchley. Plan is INDIAN FOOD! I may cook or (more likely) we'll go out or get takeaway. And I'll visit the sweetmart for jalebis and gulab jamons in advance. Anyone else want to join us just let me know...

I think you can transfer me to the list of definites K. Not sure I can be around for the whole day (I have to get to Oxford at some time that evening), but certainly for lunch and for a while after.

i am a MOST DEFINITE!!!!

i had a bit of a scare, though, in that last week, i received for the first time in my life, a call to jury duty, and it crossed over the time i was to be out. luckily, i was able to schedule a deferment of my civic duty, and now have no obstacles.

i still am looking for a bit of floor space for that sat evening; if anyone could be so kind, please pm me. i am travelling very light, and have been known to be comfortable in a bath tub ;-)

Ed, done.

Formerlee, Brown's definitely have pasta. I really think it will be best choice but don't want to book it unless we have some kind of consensus. Sorry to hear about the camera. Look fwd to meeting your friends.

Skiprow, yep you're already on the definite's list. The "mystery American" under Probables is someone else who has been looking into coming from almost the day I started the first thread!

Browns I believe have private rooms which I think are free to book. That might have changed, however.

Good idea.

When I checked briefly before I think the woman said there would be a charge for their private rooms BUT if people are agreed on this as a venue I'd check again as I doubt they'd have that much demand for those rooms at a lunch time and might give them free anyway to get us out of the regular dining area!

If people aren't keen on that one, I could also recommend my favourite Chinese restaurant in China Town, also near Leicester Square tube station - they would probably let us have their downstairs room just for us and I'm sure I could arrange in advance (if given time) a special fixed price deal with a choice out of a selection of main dishes, soft drink plus rice for everyone.

No, Gerrard's Corner which always uses fresh ingredients, has polite staff and reasonable prices...

Me and my fiancee will definitely be there.

As for eating I like the choices mentioned, I could also recommend London Jade Garden in Leicester Square for Dim Sum (yum yum). We go there frequently for about 10 pounds a head. They have large round tables, very convenient for round table discussions ;)

Really looking forward to picking all your brains on the day :)

The current suggestions all sound good to me, and if I had to choose I'd probably opt for Brown's, but I'm not fussy :o)

I think at this stage, given the lack of much response (I PMd every person on the list about this thread) and given that we'll need to book in advance given our group size, I'm going to go ahead and book Brown's (unless they ask for a deposit in which case we're just going to hope that they have space when we arrive on the day).

I don't think it's worth introducing more suggestions into the mix as people don't seem to be commenting on the ones we have already! :o)

OK so I'll call them on Wednesday when I have a day working from home and let you all know.

In the meantime, what about more feedback on what to do after lunch?

I echo skiprow's sentiments!!

I have a new 300D, Jessops exchanged the broken one with no problems.

Just need to get the other matter sorted and then I can confirm 100%, although it looks 99.999% sure at the moment. One of the two coming with me is a registered user...the other a good friend.

I really don't mind what we do, as it will be a learning curve for me...so I will be looking for help and advice. Will watch carefully for next update.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I got your PM and followed your link. I merely glanced at the first message in this new thread and stupidly assumed you'd just sent me a reminder about the last one. Well I guess that that speaks volumes.

To continue not helping much, I'd like to say that I don't have any strong preferences about eating and I only normally get as far as the Tower of London or the London Eye if I'm shooting in town, so I have no idea as to where to wander on to after eating.

I normally leave the clever stuff to others.

I haven't added much, because I'm not positive I'll be able to make it. For the record, pub food is fine, a good meat pie will satisfy my appetite any day.

As afr as what to do later, I am with Skip, I'll just be happy to be there and meet everybody.

Thanks folks for checking in...

I'll call Brown's on Wednesday, I think it will satisfy our needs.

If we haven't made a plan for the rest of the day by then we can decide together over lunch!

If I can't book Brown's will look at other options and keep you updated!

Kavey, thanks so much for putting this together and keeping on the details! I know from experience that it takes a fair amount of time to coordinate things like this, and it is VERY, VERY much appreciated!!!

Browns is always an OK place for me.
Never been to the one in Leicester Square, but the Bristol establishment is fine.

As for the afternoon activities well...
How about a simple amble via Trafalgar Square past the London Eye and down to the Houses of Parliament.

This will take in a number of the obvious landmarks.
