I've been mandated to buy a digital camera for my brother in law. The budget is $300 (can$). I've been out of this market for a while so I'm not too sure what to get. I'm partial to Canon, so I was thinking the A75. Small, versatile, but not very much MPs.

I'd love to know what people recommend, and what the pluses and minuses are.

Thanks.

Go higher in the Canon A-series: I think the A-95 is 4MP and still under $300.

They seem to have the most versatility (manual modes, add-on lenses) of any P&S.

i'll second that, the A95 is great!

it's 5mp by the way and i think we (my fiance and i) got it for $309.00

I think the A-95 is actually a 5MP camera. I just bought an A-85, which is 4MP, for myself as a pocket-camera and I am very happy with it. Great P&S and full manual controls when you want it. Uses Compact Flash (so can share with the D70) and uses AA batteries which can be found anywhere.

I think the 95 also has a swing-out LCD which can come in handy.

I'd recommend, however, the A85 (should be able to get for ~$230) and spend the rest on a halfway decent memory card.

A series are great. I only have a A70 but I would have liked the swivel LCD on mine.
More MP of course will be better.
The lenses are the same and I have no complains for its class.
If it was me at this point to choose another A series it would be A95, like generalIE said. Not sure about the price, but if the diff is not big, even if out of budget it is worth!
Now it also depends if your brother in law cares about manual controls...
It's a big plus they are there!

Yeap! good point.
And battery life on A series is great!
Edit: from dpreview
The good news is that battery life is superb - Canon quotes 400 shots (using the CIPA standard) or 360 mins of playback on a single charge. Our experience bore this out. Impressive.

Note that Canon just announced the replacements for the A75 and A85 this week. They're smaller, lighter, offer 4X zoom and use only 2 AA batteries vs. 4.

That would be the A85, priced at $279 with an extra 256MB CF Card, through Office Max in the US. (At least there most recent sale flyer had that deal in it.)

It's a great little camera, my wife is really getting into the one we picked up for her.

Thanks to all of you.

It certainly seems like the Canon A series is the one to get. You guys are all quoting US pricing though. The A85 is $330-350 here in Montreal. I can get the A75 for $270. Perhaps I'll wait for the news of the new models and see if the old ones drop a little.

Thanks.

All of my family members have Canon A series cameras (of varying model number) and all seem very happy with them.

I think they stopped making the A75 and I've heard they are out of stock everywhere.

We got my M-I-L the Olympus d-580 (4mp) for xmas. With the accesory pack, which included a bag, rechargable batteries, 64mb card, & software it was 265 including tax. She loves it. The C-740 (3mp) is another good choice for those who want manual controls.
