And why would we wanna enter this???

Funny to see an Anne Geddes suggestion one day and the this the next. Just goes to show the wide range of tastes of the folks here.

I'd say those shots go above and beyond the representation of pain. ;-)

Some of those shots are excellent

although I expect the cosy corner of the net that is DPC will favour the "Pain of Goodbye", "Pain of Rememberence", "Painful Memories" type shots.

Thanks for the link though

Steve

Even thought the guy is doing painful things he seems to be enjoying them... I don't think these convey the feeling of pain....

A 'Pain' challenge could result in a HUGE range of subjects.

Personally, I believe that self-mutilation stage acts in the original poster's link will do rather poorly. It takes a certain crowd to 'get into' those types of images and from the submissions and member profiles that I have perused I have the strong impression that there isn't an overwhelming majority of members into that scene.

In fact, those images are pretty graphic and may even go against the site rules.

Pain? Sure looks that way, but is actually a yawn.

Gross or not.. I still believe in photographing emotions. Pain is a excellent challenge, that will challenge the photographer a little more then "Sign" or "Green". :)

Hope dpc can have more emotion challenges in the future: "Happiness, Sorrow, Anger, etc" :)

The pain photos I published was taken at a show called "Pain solutions".

Perhaps I am from the warm cozy corner of dpc, but I wish that the link above had a "graphic images of self mutilation warning" with it. Everyone may have different taste, but I was not at all thrilled to be taken to those images without fair warning of what they were.

Ugh. This is going to bring out about 300 contrived, inauthentic shots of someone sitting in a corner hiding their face or staring off into the far reaches of the family room above the title of 'the pain of the longing and the remorseful feelings of regretful days gone by. OMG.' or something like that. i'm not only going to pass on entering, i likely won't even look.

Thus, my point is made.

Quite frankly, I do agree with Linda. Everyone has their "thing" that gets them going in the morning and if that's self-mutilation, that's perfectly fine, for them. For the majority of the world that finds self-mutilation to be a disturbing act, we appreciate some warning that may suggest to us that we may not wish to follow a link to such images.

Just a warning, nothing more, nothing less. I am not saying it is wrong to do that to oneself, just that I would rather not be witness to nor would I be interested in taking part in those acts.

Some words for reflection:

"Pain and fear and hunger are effects of causes which can be foreseen and known: but sorrow is a debt which someone else makes for us."
~Freya Stark (1893–1993), British travel writer.

"For pain is perhaps but a violent pleasure? Who could determine the point where pleasure becomes pain, where pain is still a pleasure? Is not the utmost brightness of the ideal world soothing to us, while the lightest shadows of the physical world annoy?"
~HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850), French novelist.

"Pain is real when you get other people to believe in it. If no one believes in it but you, your pain is madness or hysteria."
~Naomi Wolf (b. 1962), U.S. author.

"Pain is as diverse as man. One suffers as one can."
~Victor Hugo (1802–1885), French poet, novelist, playwright, essayist.

I daren't include a 'pain' shot at the moment...my 4 day old 300D has fallen apart!!

The focusing screen and mounting frame fell out!

There is no photo that can show my pain.

I wanna know what people think of a child in pain. Like actually hurt his/herself? If that was captured on camera, would it get lower ratings cuz it's a child? I'm not saying severe pain, or and ER visit, but something that a mother or father can hug their child and be like "its ok". That is what I'm wondering before I decide what I really want to enter. Cuz today, where I'm at, there was quite a few things involving PAIN that I captured. All over town, and I'm wondering what people would think of the child in pain.

Who is the "we" you are referring to?

DPC is not one utterly homogenous group in which everyone has the same interests and sensibilities.

IMHO it's right and proper to have as wide a range of challenge themes as possible to reflect the diversity of DPCers themselves.

Where a particular challenge doesn't appeal to any member, even to the majority of members, those members are absolutely free not to enter.

Since I have little interest in physical pain and am not sure whether I am currently in the mood to create an image representing emotional/ psychological pain I will probably not enter myself.

But it would be nice not see people making that choice without resorting to dismissing or scorning the preferences and interests of others. As long as the images shown don't seem to show non-consensually inflicted pain, it's not really my (or other peoples') place to comment.
