My friend is looking for a cheap Russian camera that she used in a class once and can't remember the name of. This is her description:

It was a rectangular camera, and I don't think there was a protruding lens. To set the aperture, you shifted a dial according to small icons of farm imagery with weather. It took 35mm film. I've been searching for this, and I can tell that it's not a Lomo, Smena, Zorki, Zenit, or Kiev. It doesn't look like any Lubitel I've found yet, though the name sounds incredibly right. I don't think it was a FED, either. There were no parts that folded out, and it was pretty lightweight. This would have been in 1997 or 1998.

I asked her what the photos looked like (regular or funky) and she said: Regular. I only took b&w, but I bet it would have taken color film. I don't remember how it loaded, though I'm willing to bet the back pried off and the film had to be wound.

Anyone have any ideas?

Holga? Only some of the Holga cameras produced funky images. Many had to be modified to create the proper distortions.

Check out //www.photohistory.ru/35ScaleCam.htm. I would bet it was a Lomo compact-automat though, if you are saying nothing folded out...

If it was the lyubitel, and you need to search for it, in russian it's spelled любитель. But it's hard to search for that because it literally means 'amateur', so you come up with a handful of totally unrelated stuff.

If you need help translating anything - email me.

edit: blah, this site doesn't seem to be internationalized well...

if it's a Lomo, check this out:
//www.lomography.com/

B&H sells both Lomo (not particularly "cheap") and Holga (very cheap, but quite beautiful photos possible).

the site above also sells these cheap (!) cameras.

I was thinking maybe it was a Lomo based on the little people on the camera here but she says no. She says she distinctly remembers a farm (a barn and a tree) as one of the aperture settings.

hrm... sorry i guess i didn't read the whole description originally...

I can't imagine where to even start trying to figure this out. Perhaps this would be better posted on some of the lomo-specific forums where folks are likely to have a much better grasp of the whole world of cheap russian cameras :)
