Just an idea..

For every challenge, it would be handy to have an automatic specific challenge thread created, and the link of which is displayed in the challenge details.

This would stop the 100 duplicate threads, and be a quick pointer to anyone that isn't sure of the criteria.

For example, one clicks on the challenge and it shows.

Challenge Details: Photograph anything relating to the number 3.
Challenge Type: 48-Hour Member Challenge
Challenge Rules: Advanced Editing (Updated 1/3/05)
Submission Deadline: Jan 27 2005 (began Jan 26 2005)
Voting Dates: Jan 28 2005 -> Feb 3 2005
Discussion: Three Discussion

Sounds like a great idea. Certainly would make it easier to find the right one.

That is certainly a very good idea. I can't see a downside, and it would really help to both keep discussion consolidated and easily accessible and to reduce forum clutter.

While I like the idea in principle, there are potential downsides that I see.

This may cause some to not start threads concerning a challenge that discusses something that isn't quite concerning the entire challenge as a whole.

Also, there are at least three distinctly different types of threads that reliably surface about most every challenge, description discussion, score comparison and outtakes; just which one (if any) was this intended to make official?

Not trying to pick nits; just a bit uncertain about what this is intended to accomplish.

It would be discussing the challenge, not showing scores and not showing outtakes.

Another alternative would be to not have any threads about the current challenge until voting starts. That way people could interpret the challenge details for themselves and see what kind of photo they produce without the intermingling of many other people's interpretations and suggestions. Some people already operate that way just by choosing to ignore those threads.

If you call it Official people would probably start thinking it was official instead of just people's opinions. It could get to be a real long thread, and with people feeling compelled to read it since it was called Official, a lot of time would be wasted reading a half dozen or more pages of attaboys interspersed with a few useful, but not absolutely necessary, remarks.

And I'd hate to see an entry that met the challenge according to the details but was perhaps at varience to what some people post in such a thread wind up voted low with a comment like "This doesn't meet the challenge. Didn't you read the Official thread, you dummie?"

Why just not make it any and everything to do with that challenge including scores and outtakes?

'Cuz it would get too long, banner...

I'd be interested in reading discussion about challenges but really couldn't care less about everyone's up-to-the-minute score updates. I'd rather see two separate threads.

if this happens, it will only take one or two nuts to screw up the entire thread and ruin it for everyone.

..good point but to centralize everyone into one thread (aka forum socialism) makes it an easy target for these "trolls" who take pleasure in ruining good threads.
